As an old woman who had an abortion in the late 70’s I am so frigging proud of Ohio.

Another old woman here who 20 years ago had emergency surgery for a ruptured fallolian tube because of an ectopic pregnancy yet only learned in the last two years that this procedure --- which by the way saved my life --- is considered by conservative Republicans to also be an abortion and therefore should be outlawed. I am also very freaking proud of Ohio!!

Ohio suburban mom here-Issue 1 included significant, onerous changes to signature requirements and curing that even pushed republicans (who might not be pro-choice) to vote no. I feel like plenty of republicans could see this absolutely backfiring on them in the future. Glossing over that piece of the puzzle makes the picture quite different, IMHO.

True. But I think 98% of people at OSU voting no had a lot to do with abortion. But yeah you could definitely want really tight restrictions on abortion and see that this would backfire.

Issue 1 wasn't really complicated. Citizen initiatives allow citizens of the state the power to make laws when politicians fail to do their jobs. Requiring 60% for a citizen initiative to pass just doesn't sit right. Arkansas Republicans tried the same thing in our 2022 election. They also lost.

No doubt the forthcoming constitutional amendment in November was a major factor. But it is inaccurate to frame yesterday’s results here in OH as being entirely about women’s choice issues. Issue 1 was clearly a blatant and ham-fisted attempt to grab power by the GOP. And it was extremely hypocritical to call a last minute August special election right after recently legally banning such elections. Hence, some people here were voting primarily to retain the same simple majority requirement for constitutional amendments that has been in place for over a century. It gives OH voters a rare ability to shape what is happening in important areas and has made a big difference at certain points in time. Certainly, these results do not portend well for certain GOP efforts in the near future. But I urge you to exercise some caution when trying to extrapolate yesterday’s margin to future elections in a precise way. We’ll see in November how closely it lines up.

Maybe I hung around too many of the comment sections of local Ohio news coverage of Issue 1, but most of the opposition voters who commented on this issue talked about how it got on the ballot and what it would mean for citizen led initiatives. For them, this was not about abortion, it was an attempt to undermine the voting power of the constituents. There was very little “protect reproductive rights” talk on the “no” side. It was the “yes” voters who seemed to want to tie this to abortion. Which made me think that the abortion debate was just a way to rile up the pro-lifers so they’d willingly give up their voting power. Just my thoughts.

Re women's soccer. Can we at least recognize that the US Team has created a pathway for women around the world. So... like with Men's basketball where once the US won every Olympics, well soccer too is an international sport - such that the Phillipines recruited 18 Americans to play. And teams have cycles - old and young. So let's just accept that the USA lost -but they fought hard and they still are a model for women's sports. So yes Megan R is at the end of a career. BTW, I watched Willie Mays in his last year. Still happy they played Willie.

You will not persuade them that Donnie is incompetent, corrupt and dangerous. Find out what those base but often false fears are and you may have a way in. All of the pundits seems to think that Ohio is now a solidly red state. Not so fast. I'm from Ohio. Ohio is very independent. Ask John Kasich. Ask Mike DeWine. When you start to assume that Ohio is going to vote your way, I can promise you that you're going to be disappointed. I honestly don't know what happened to Tim Ryan other than he's been around for a long time. When I asked my friends and family if they were going to vote for him over JD Vance, they all said no because they're perception was, Tim Ryan didn't do much as a Congressman. Since half my life has been spent outside of Ohio, I couldn't argue. I will tell you, however, I knew in June of 2015 that Trump was going to be our next President because of everyone I talked to in Ohio. And I'll tell you now, I doubt that Trump is even going to win the nomination this time around. We all know he's nuts.
