I live in Canada, so I'm used to living under a government that is slow, ineffective, and more conservative than it claims to be. But I can't imagine living in a nation where the government is _actively working against its citizen's interests and wellbeing._ How much longer will Americans put up with this?
@thing_under_the_stairs

Yeah, I can stand living with a government that's best defined by its mostly benign incompetence. But it's also nice to know, as a chronically ill trans person, that most of the people in our government don't actively want me and others like me dead. Though I do wonder about Doug Ford, and a lot of those wankers from Alberta...

Oh, EFF that. We barely cleared $50,000 last year for a family of four, and WE got audited for no reason (they ended up having to add $200 interest to our refund for the 6-month delay). Rich people need to pay their fair share, especially when a working-class family gets audited randomly!

Agreed entirely. If we stopped auditing random families, we probably wouldn’t lose anything at all, or not much. I grew up in a conservative family and was conservative myself for a while. But when Trump was running for president (the first time), I saw my parents falling in love with him and everything he said, and I never understood why. But that was the start of my reevaluating my own political beliefs and now I am somewhere on the left. As an upper-middle class taxpayer who has had a few “adjustments” to my tax returns by auditors, I want more funding for the IRS, not less. These adjustments come half a year or more after the April filing date, and objections take several more months to resolve which may impact the following year’s returns. I’m a perfectionist so if I’ve made a mistake I want to know about it as soon as possible, and if the IRS has made a mistake I want it fixed quickly.

You are fundamentally correct, in that we do theoretically know how to build a warp drive and achieve greater energy resources. I assume that it is all being directed by the fossil fuel industry to keep up the profits of an unsustainable and limited energy resource. A system of energy I might add that has no redundancy built into it on purpose, renewables have redundancy and undermines our need for their energy so that's why they fight so hard against it. Not a single republican thinks it would be a bad thing to be energy independent but also think that more fossil fuels is how we get there somehow and using other energy resources is bad or worse than fossils fuel are. Little do they know that the energy grid has always been a variety of energy resources and has never been fully dependent on fossil fuels. To get us to 50 percent is extremely doable for instance because we are already at the 25 percent mark and unfortunately even the coal power plants could be far more efficient than they are now, they burn unnecessary amounts of coal just to meet quotas and they use intentionally inefficient boiler and turbine designs.

I study media much like Steve does, I just wish i could get my family to see how manipulated they are. My dad is straight up voting against his own and my interests and it makes me upset to see them being so manipulated. Slaving away at a job he hates, working way to much, scared to retire because hes worried about HEALTHCARE. f**k! Being religious makes you such an easy target to being manipulated. They constantly are told to fear being influenced by demons and sin, they fail to see that they are the most susceptible to being led astray. If there are demons after the souls of christians, they would go directly to them. These televangelists and "christian" politicians who actually try to win the votes of christians are the real demons. my dad actually says "its christians that give christianity a bad name" hes so freakiing close! You're right on both counts; they aren't serious people yet, somehow, still manage to be a serious threat to our democracy. They're both Grifters Oafs and Phonies (great alternate acronym, by the way!) and also very dangerous because of the power that these idiots have somehow managed to acquire. A gluttonous troll armed with a club, may not be sophisticated, but it can still do some serious damage. These people put the "theater" in Political Theater. They are "Bad Actors" in both the figurative and literal sense and I'm continually astonished (and horrified) that my fellow Americans continue to buy into the act. Schwindel (the noun) can mean giddy or dizzy, but it can also mean a scam or a lie. Schwindeln (the verb) is scamming or lying, never anything about giddy or crazy. That may well be it's etymological origin, but if so, that was a long time ago.

@@KaiHenningsen You might want to check out Google translate before you assert with authority that the word's origin is buried in some deep etymological past. As I'm sure you know, German is much more comfortable with agglutinative repurposing of existing words, leading to a number of things, including a taste for pictorial phrases like the lovely, "Er sägt sich sein eigener Zweig ab." in any event, thanks for the comment. The takeaways I get from the recent shenanigans in the USA are: 1 - The GOP seems to retain more power despite losing the last election and there being a Democratic president. 2 - Your legislative system is crippled by there not being a speaker. Is there no Deputy Speaker? The one who takes over when the main speaker is unable to fulfil his duties? And, yes, we here in the UK have our own omni-shambles to worry about, so I’m not casting stones. Even through we are experiencing our own political meltdowns, Parliament was at least able to keep running even when a change in Speaker was taking place. By “running” I mean all the procedural processes to ensure the procedural wheels of government keep turning, despite the failure of the political parties to actually do their jobs.

It's mainly because this never had to be a problem before. The record for highest number of votes for a US speaker prior to 2023 was 2, over 100 years ago. It would be like planning for a scenario of what to do when half of SCOTUS dies in a plane crash. It could, but it was so unlikely prior to this fustercluck that even bothering to form a committee to solve this would be a waste of time. Until now.

1. That's because the GOP creates electoral maps that guarantee them a +20 victory even if a state is 50\50. They're so brazen our conservative Supreme Court had to call out some if them out. Getting elected to Congress used to be a really big deal. People used to go to law school or have some very prestigious position in their community after years of public service to run for Congress to show they’re serious. Now you can get elected in a GOP-run district and not know your a** from a hole in the ground. Case in point, there’s a GOP congresswoman this year that didn’t know there are different *types* of felonies so she thought DC legalized public urination when they changed the punishment for public urination, and made a total a** of herself. Her job before Congress? A failed restaurant owner in rural Colorado. On the same committee are people that have advanced degrees and have years of experience as attorneys and public servants. The irony is before I learned all of this, including the theater thing, I referred to her as “Republican Dillion Harper” for the irony that she looked like her, yet the adult film actress she looks like what do a better job as a Representative due to being smarter and being “better at getting people behind her.” Little did I know that Boebert would go on to prove the nickname more accurate with what she did in that theater alone.

Back when Trump's tax cuts were going to be inevitably passed, I know I did something that, while true in its point, did not exactly help the progressive cause. My mother, like any of the MAGA then and now, were defending the proposed cuts. I had kept doing things like pointing out how it was deliberately designed to NOT help families like ours, how things like adding complete write-offs for private jet purchases and private university ownership, but she kept adamantly defending them and driving me to snapping at her. No, I did not scream or yell or anything like that. Instead, I asked: "Mom, I know I'm not exactly the best when it comes to spending money, but even I know that it is best to maximize the money I bring in before I spend it. You are the actual accountant of this family and had even studied for it (really, she has a 2-year degree and got it back when it actually meant something), so can you explain to me how reducing the _biggest_ revenue source is supposed to pay for itself, especially when you are NOT reducing any spending as well?" That was the only time I got her to stop defending the tax cuts, mostly because she could not muster an answer to that question. No, I did not expect an immediate answer; I gave her nearly an hour to come up with something - anything - and she could not. I will also admit that my follow-up did not exactly help: "That silence, that inability to explain it, is exactly what those f^^^ing con artists you vote for are counting on you, that you are rather happily demonstrating, to be: f^^^ing stupid. If someone like me, who is bad with money, can see and acknowledge what you, who is supposed to be good with money, can also see but refuse to acknowledge, then why the f^^^ should I or anyone at [the bank she works for - I am being polite enough to protect her employment, which I have reconsidered multiple times] trust you with money?" It also did not help that I essentially rubbed it in her face when she saw her taxes go up after the cuts were inevitably passed and thus acknowledged that she made a grave mistake. Like I said, I know I did not exactly help the progressive cause, but sometimes, you have to take to this approach. Granted, it should not be often, and ideally, it should be never, but there will be times when you just have to.

Only recently started viewing your channel. This is on general point that GOP has changed, but so have news outlets. Here I mention US Supreme Court, which has been changed colossally by GOP. I was an active Democrat for decades. In 2008, as I was retiring from active politics, I was one of the 538 for Obama-Biden (not much controversy about Electoral College that year). When I studied political science, and then went to Law School, decades ago, we were taught how liberals and conservatives were defined. When Justice William Brennan retired in 1990, he was the last liberal on the US Supreme Court - and this was noted at the time by many. Brennan opposed the death penalty in all cases and said a woman had a right to an abortion in all cases. That was the definition of a liberal: no to death penalty period, yes to abortion period. Thurgood Marshall wasn’t a liberal by that definition. Therefore: no liberals on the US Supreme Court since 1990. But to my shock, the news outlets just went along with saying whoever was on the left was a liberal. By the old traditional definitions, on the US Supreme Court now there are six reactionaries and three conservatives. I think even Barry Goldwater would be stunned that reactionaries are now called conservatives by the Grifters Oafs and Phonies whether they are in politics or news outlets.

@@danielcrafter9349it's called wilful ignorance, which isn't stupidity. Stupidity is the inability to learn and denial of truth and fact isn't an inability, it's a choice. It's important to keep this in mind because you don't change wilful ignorance by treating it as stupidity, you do it by removing the perceived necessity of the ignorance and cut off the spread of misinformation that fuels it. You also do it through the proper education of young people who are more receptive to learning and accepting new ideas.

I love the rainbow Maryland flag. Also, "swindler" seems (to me) to carry an implication that material goods have changed hands and that the swindler has provided goods that are either not as advertised or are simply not of equal value to whatever was received in exchange. Politicians rarely traffic in tangible items.
