It would seem that Ken Buck has self terminated in a “I’m gonna take my ball & bat and go home”. His decision to perform it in such style will follow him as the Law of Unintended Consequences provides that there is no escape just because it wasn’t what you really intended to happen. He has hurt people by quitting and frankly shines a negative light on all involved with him in his past and it will carry into his future (whatever that might include). This is especially true after already announcing he would not run again which should have been remedy enough to address whatever matters might truly exist. It was shamefully selfish unless he has a medical emergency or family situation but even then, taking a leave of absence would be the appropriate process. Still, I wish him well as I do all who serve in Congress….even the bad ones (all parties). They are serving our country in ways that most will never understand.

Rep. Buck is correct. We need a new vetting process for selecting decent people who understand that they were elected to represent The People, not themselves. If someone wants to make laws for others they need to be held to a higher standard which means honesty and integrity, no criminal record, and good credit. Term limits and background checks should be thrown into the mix, too.

The problem is that if 'traditional' Republicans left the GOP to form another political party, then their vote share would be inadequate (for at least a couple of decades). I imagine many Republican voters are also caught in this trap. So the balance between Reps is 219 Republican and 213 Democrat, but that doesn't take into account the fact that - if memory serves - that 6 Republicans have already cleared out or been kicked out. That makes the voting balance actually 213 to 213. With Buck stepping out does that tip the House to the Democrats or do they not officially do that until the majority of seats voted in are in the majority versus the number of seats actually occupied?

@@davidgiles9651 I think, after further research, that the 219 is AFTER the existing exits. Which means Britt leaving drops them to 218. However, under the current number of House seats and the rules, 218 is the minimum needed to hold a majority and is also the minimum number of votes to win a majority vote. It's not about who has MORE votes, but who has 218 or more. So, if another Republican leaves, neither party legally has a majority control of the House and basically the Republicans end the ability to pass any legislation or motions without getting Democrats involved.

If you really believe their was this aura of civility or partisan bickering going on between Congressman, Senators pre-1980's or that Newt Gingrich somehow magically invented or accelerated nastier, divisive partisan-based politics, you need to seriously examine how contensious, nasty and bitter some of the verbal sparring was during the 1960's and 70's on Vietnam, affirmative action, the economic stagflation during the Carter presidency, healthcare reform. It was pretty aggressive, cutthroat despite what MSNBC anchors or commentators would have you believe now.

Compared to people like Trump, Kevin McCarthy, Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, MJT, Lauren Boebert, Gingrich comes across like a choir boy and sure, his “Contract with America” mid-90’s revamp of GOP was more aggressive but honestly, the GOP in the early 90’s was getting its ass kicked with Bush 41 losing re-election in 1992 to Clinton, Dems had controlled one House of Congress since the late 1940’s, GOP seemed old, stale, out of touch and with a rudderless direction. It needed an infusion of fresh blood, newer politicians with fresh ideas that were willing to fight for their ideals and convictions. By the mid-90’s, likes of Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, George H. W. Bush, Bob Dole belonged to a different generation and didn’t have all the answers anymore.

Biden's campaign has raised more than four times as much money as Trump's. Kevin McCarthy was the best fundraiser in congress, and he got thrown under the bus by the extremists.
