GoPro: Face-to-Face with a Polar Bear

A rare encounter with this Arctic apex predator 🐻‍❄️ #GoProAwards recipient Andreas Heide + Tord Karlsen set up our 360 camera, GoPro MAX, in Northern Svalbard + captured this incredible shot of the bear scouting out its whale blubber breakfast. Using GoPro Labs' Motion Detection, the team was able to leave their camera unattended for hours until this large adult strolled by, hunting for its next meal.
At the current rate of sea ice melt, 2/3 of the world’s polar bears could be extinct by the year 2050. These large predators rely on the ice for both hunting + as a means of travel across the arctic. It's a whale carcass. Look at the size of the spinal column on the left... it's far longer than the bear itself. The white material is blubber, which looks a bit like fur in this footage

GoPro Labs firmware is used for motion detection, so the camera owner is a long way off. It is a 360° camera, so reframing is an editing function. There was no camera person.

Probably not the case. We are different physiologically in the cooling/heating department. These bears have a different type of fat than ours, that keeps them warmer (warmer than human fat), thicker skin and hair composed of layers that traps air. The air trapping allows heat exchange to happen slower. That is , it insulates.
