I think you are giving a bunch of excuses for go Pro. GoPro is false advertising. I bought the camera because i want to record in 5k. After so many GoPro models that’s Cool feature right? Well Not really. As a content creator the last thing i need to worry is while making a video, the camera just shuts off by itself. Usually after 20 minutes or overheats regardless of the memory card i used from 128 to 1 tb. With a fully charged battery. Suggesting you need to turn off all the other camera features or don’t record in 5 k, ok so that’s the point. I want to record in 5 k, constantly be worried about recording time or constantly checking if the camera still on make this product a defective product that is sold on a hype of features it cannot really perform.

Completely agree, I spent a ton of money to record kids baseball games. Haven’t got through a single 90 minute game yet. Have changed all the settings. GPS, anutoupload, screens off, stabilization off. Even moved to an external battery to reduce the heat caused from the battery. 3D printed a cover. Latest step was to add a 3D printed cover with a 90 mm fan running on an external battery. Still shuts down in 85 degree weather. I keep seeing these KZbinrs say they can do these 5k recordings, but at what temperature and for how long. As soon as my 1 year GoPro online is up, I will be selling this go pro, the lenses, stack of batteries and grips.

Misleading title as you didn’t fix anything. These are just a few tips to make it heat less. You also say that in real life it had never overheated but you use it for max 5 minutes. You could have demonstrated recording half hour while disabling a lot of stuff and see if it still overheats. Time waster mate.

I think a major corporation like gopro should make a camera that doesn't over heat in a climate controlled room even if just sitting there. Why should the consumer have to learn to jump through hoops to get the most out of their camera. If they spent more time perfecting their camera to make it reliable rather than shoving more stuff into it every year and hope to fix it with firmware. I can see it now lol GoPro 15 with 8k 240fps that will run for 15 min if you buy the water cooled camera jacket and use at a min speed of 45 miles an hour on a winter day. The European Union has rules in place that taxes imports extra if they can record over 30 minutes, so DSLR and other camera manufacturers artificially created 30 min. record time limits in their devices to avoid this tax

Desperate to have the gopro working without shutting down due to heating. Good recommendations if you were to use a cheap sports camera that cost 50 dollars or 50 euros. Just bought 2 hero 12s. Set them to 2.7k, ran them side by side. One has been recording for over an hour with a battery installed. The other died after 28 minutes - exact same settings. Let it cool, then restarted the test, but this time with an external battery. Failed again after around 20 minutes. Obviously a small sample size but I think there is some true to the overheating issue and that it impacts some cameras more than others.

I was using the GoPro Hero 11 Black to shoot small mammal trapping (for an online biology class). I had the camera mounted in the media mod frame on an elastic headmount to give POV so students could visualize setting out traps. I was out 30 min before sunset (it was about 80 degrees out and cooling down). I wanted to film the entire process in one continual shot (about 25mins) so I could speed up some and slow down some parts. I set the camera to 4k 120fps (I can't remember the other settings, but I had to operate the camera form my phone as I was doing this solo). It first turned off after 10 mins, then again every 2-5mins after. This was INCREDIBLY frustrating especially when trying to shoot something within a specific timeframe. I feel this is reprehensible for an action camera. GoPro should add - can't be used in Arizona outside for more than a few minutes in the summer. Or maybe - can't be used outside in the sun or heat. Or - plan every shot and reset the camera for each short clip. Admittedly, I am new to this GoPro and could have used other settings that might have helped and maybe not used the media mod frame. This renders the camera almost useless except for, as you say, for quick shots. I hope I can find some way to prevent this overheating.

My use of the GoPro is for sessions lasting 20 to 30 minutes (although post processing eliminates more than 90% of the material). Maybe you could recommend to Telesin (anybody) to make a really small, battery self contained, fan with a convenient mount to move air over the GoPro. I have been able to shoot 25-30 minutes without overheating using a mechanically cludged fan setup. In a separate comment that I have not seen elsewhere: my GoPro Hero 11 Black handles large files without creating those annoying ~4GB separate files. I was shooting 240 fps, front and back of golf swing practice with Hero 10 Black in the front and the 11 shooting from the side. The Hero 10 produced multiple ~4GB files while the 11 produced a single 7 GB file. Has the 11 switched from FAT to NTSF? Good thing for you to test?

No, it's not FAT vs NTSF, it's actually something more fundamental. What you are describing means they have switched from 32 bit to a 64 bit processor. Since a 32 bit processor's max file size is exactly 4GB. :) Good to know, thank you for sharing your observations!

I have 3 of them, all hero 11’s. All 3 of them overheat every single time I use them, and that is outdoors at around 55 degrees, Always within 30 min despite any setting changes. The only way it won’t overheat is if you take the battery out and power the cameras using external battery pack. Filmed 8 hours of fishing this weekend with the media mod and no battery inserted - powering the camera via the USB-C port to an Anker 20,000 battery. You have to turn the camera on and off a few times as it will automatically shut down when it detects that the internal battery is NOT inserted. That said if you cycle power like 3 times.. it no longer automatically shuts down and you can then film all day on any setting and it never overheats.

I really hope this works! I’m having the same issue. No matter what settings I try, it over heats relatively quickly when I’m out fishing. I bought 3 different external battery packs but non would power the camera without the battery. I about Chucked the damn thing into the river today.

GoPro 11 here. Take out the battery. Plug-in the Volta for inside 60FPS particularly. You have hours. Fixed my overheating. It will say no battery. BS but works.

Very good info if you are on land or shallow water and GoPro even sent me this way for this video to learn how to stop the over heat. None of this works for underwater while diving though. I had mine shut down on me multiple times throughout my multiple days of diving. I was shooting at 4k and 60 fps.

Great for tok tik videos but some people like to use these on racecars that run for 30 min at a time. Even though it going 150mph it still overheats and shuts down 1/2 way into a session. I dont go underwater but I do need a way to expel the heat from inside the camera.

I’m at Disney World right now. This morning I shot 4 hours almost continuously with an Endoro battery and also with Volta, no battery. My 11 was inside the Media Mod and I was outside in the sun the whole time. Very hot Florida day. My Hero11 DID NOT overheat once. Did it get warm? Yes, it did. And it worked flawlessly filling an entire 128gb card with perfect 4K 30fps footage.

Interesting. I was shooting with my 11 and it shut down due to overheating in about 23 min. I was using 4K 60fps. So, dropping it to 30fps will make that much of a difference? By the way, which 128gb card were you using? Thanks.

I think my combination of settings and use habits are to blame for no overheating. 4K at 30fps, standard bitrate, hyper smooth on AutoBoost, using Hero11 powered by Volta and no battery sometimes with a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128gb formatted in the GoPro. And I’m walking around shooting 5-10 minute segments and I never charge batteries while inside my GoPro.

Awesome content, as always! Thank you sir! On "the surface of the sun" - i.e. Orlando, FL - our GoPro (9 and 10, 11 is on the way) will overheat, but it's infrequent and manageable. We use the Hindsight feature a LOT, so it's essentially recording all the time. With power is provided by the Volta, it has enough power to eventually overheat. But, turn off Hindsight, record in 4K, 30 FPS and you're usually OK, even in difficult environments. Also, when our GoPro DOES occasionally overheat, remember that it's waterproof (Unless you're using the Media Mod) so go run it under a water fountain, or pour some bottled water over it and it will be back in working conditions really quickly. When we're on the boat, this does happen, so we just dunk it in the lake and 20 seconds later, we're ready to record someone wiping out on the tube! Anyway, keep up the awesome content.

WIth the volta, do you use the special door? I can't imagine dunking it in a lake would be good for the internals. maybe bottled water but i'm not sure. I'm getting a volta for christmas and know it's mostly weather-proof, but maybe bottled water might work.

@@enhidri160 just dunk the camera under water, not the Volta too. We use Snap Mounts with the Volta. So disconnect the cable and place the camera in cool water. Back in business in a few.

Thanks for the tips, but what you are describing are essentially workarounds. Do you think that it is ethical how the HERO11 is advertised? Also, you are essentially stating that if the camera is used without some of these hacks, it is used wrong. I think that is problematic. I mount the camera on a handrail on the outside of a boat. I want to use the 5.3k resolutions, so I can crop in post-production. I need stabilization, because of the boat's movements even at slow speeds and in good weather. Testing at 37-42ºF @ 5.3k 30 fps Hypersmooth Auto, displays and GPS off, high speed SD card purchased from GoPro, the camera overheated. I tested again in 4k 24fps and Hypersmooth Auto and had the same result. It seems that any combination of high resolution AND HyperSmooth boost causes thermal issues. Granted, the overheating occurred between 30-40 minutes, but I am using this camera for action only and operate the record button only if it is safe. The workarounds are useful and so is the use of a remote. But, where does GoPro state in its advertising material that the camera should only be used for 1-2 minutes at a time? The answer is: nowhere. The expectations set by GoPro are essentially that HyperSmooth will help getting great, high-resolution footage in very dynamic environments. Not on tripods. Not for only a couple of minutes. I use my Hero9 for snowmobiling and can get high-res, stabilized footage until the battery runs out. There is simply a product issue here.

Well i don’t know, i have GoPro 8 for 2 years now. I use it mostly when riding my motorcycle and shooting in 4k 30 fps. Shooting 20-30 mins at time. Have 2 batteries (original GoPro batteries) and yesterday i realised when stopping to rest when i was riding the Go Pro was frozen the display was black and the red dot that shows when is recording was not turning on or off it was always on. Then i had to take out the battery and put it back in. Then when i turned the camera on the display was flickering and some sort of purple lines was going all over the place. Idk if this is heat problem or battery or sd card. I have the same card you showed in the video. I am going to buy some new batteries TELESIN not original because i cant find any, and i am going to update my comment. If some one know whats going on with my camera feel free to comment maybe you will help me. If it is fixable if not the camera is for the garbage. Sorry for the long comment. :)

I will record using a Media Mod because I want to connect a mic system to it for better audio and when we do garage videos where we are recording in the shade, in the garage, but for maybe 30-45 minutes or more, that thing craps out 20-25 minutes in. I then have to take everything apart, pull out the battery, and put the camera in the refrigerator for maybe 10 minutes to lower that temp so that we can continue. It's totally understandable that GoPro designed it for the outdoors where air flow would be greater, but I just wish the camera allowed for an external mic without the media mod because I think that's where my issue is. Typical marketing response to a problem that your product has had for 3 generations now. FIX THE PROBLEM. Design a better case that dissipates heat properly. Doesn't matter how good the video quality is if I get to the end of the road or a session at a track day, only to find that the camera overheated and shut down 7 minutes into the run... 4k60 should not be causing this much heat and instability on a moving vehicle. And your Customer Service folks told me that his "was normal" and would not replace the defective camera under warranty or my subscription service...

@@kabutomx They wouldn't replace mine under warranty, despite having the "two replacements per year" plan. They said that it overheating was normal, and not a sign of a defective product. Hence why I tossed it in the trash and will not buy another product from them until they get their act together... They give out free stuff to get positive reviews, but I have seen too many people have the same issues that I was having. It's just not a quality product.

Get the smallrig cage and problem solved and you don't have to compensate by lowering the settings, much better. with the cage the gopro dissipates heat so much better.

I just got my GoPro 11 and had it on a magnet/chest mount walking around in Walmart and it shut off twice within 30 minutes due to overheating. I have it set to 4k @60fps. However I do have the media mode on it. During yesterdays filming over have my footage was trash because a very loud buzzing/crackling. The video was fine but the audio was trash and since that was the video, talking, it was all trash. I had a rode mini plugged in to it and was inside my parked car so wind or any other outside sounds were no present. Anyway the over heating is my biggest concern. But it could be due to the media mode case covering the camera. What is your opinion?

Hey bud I don't know if your monitoring your comments but I need some help. My wedding is tomorrow and I'd love to use my GoPro 11 but brand new out of the box I tried to set it up and film a hyperlapse video of me building the Lego Titanic and literally after 12 minutes it shut down from overeating. I absolutely don't want to have this happen so maybe we can connect up on this. I don't exactly know the best way to set up the camera for shooting an indoor wedding that's going to last about 30 minutes. Thanks

None of these suggestions work. I film continuously at 4k 120 for my fishing videos in the Florida sun in summer with an external battery and all those items you mentioned OFF, and I tried a white plastic umbrella I made and that did not work. the only thing that is working is these little 2510 USB fans blowing into the battery box, held on with elastic. Hoping the 12 is better, but I doubt it.

Hey Danny! New subscriber here. Thank you for the great vids. I am looking to get the Hero 11 in the very near future, and one of the applications I wanted to use it for was a dash cam. I know there are dashcams out there, however, I am wanting the all-in-one aspect. However, this overheating thing is something I am worried about, especially being here in Texas. I used an old Sony point-n-shoot camera on a dash mount, and it overheats with the sun here. As you mentioned, someone needs to create a sun shader! For now, I wonder if I can just make a white cardboard topper for it? Question though. Where are the mics specifically on this? I am considering creating a custom "hose" of sorts from the air vent that will blow conditioned air on the unit, and maybe keep it cooler. Obviously though, don't want "wind noise" so to speak.

I have a Hero9 Black, and I was going to get a new 11 on sale at Costco. I record video bicycle rides about 1-2 hours in length. Do you think I will have overheating issues? This is a dealbreaker. I know the 12 is out, but such a good price for the 11 bundle at Costco.

@@Ch33ch007 I did, and I did have it overheat ONCE. But it was almost 100 Degrees when I was out riding, and I stopped for a short while (should have turned it off). I put a new COOL battery in and finished the ride.

Had my 10 Hero overheat 4k 60 fps, underwater (Bora Bora winter season, so the water was cold). Correct memory card. Don’t know how you have to try to overheat them.

I was at a Nerf event last weekend... and almost everyone's Hero 10, 11, and 12's all overheated... I ended up going using my Hero 7 as a backup... I managed to use it all day with no overheating...

I have purchased a few of those SanDisk Extreme Pro micro sd cards off Amazon and had an error message on new GoPro 11 saying that I should use a faster card? Have you encountered any problems with those same sd cards purchased from Amazon? Please send link to the seller that you have used off Amazon to purchase. I have also noticed the footage was acting up with these SanDisk Extreme Pro Micro SD cards at the beginning of the video clips starting out a strange off speed fluctuations but not sure if that was due to slow internet??? So my Hero 8 Black worked perfectly fine, but could not use the newer Enduro batteries that are supposed to give more life in the cold. I bought a Hero 11 Black to get the use of the Enduro batteries plus have better stabilization, higher resolution, and greater frame rates available. But what you’re telling me is that I need to turn the settings down below those on my Hero 8 in order to get the much more advanced and expensive Hero 11 Black to function at all? My Hero 11 overheats within 5 to 10 minutes while sitting on a tripod in a 64°F room. Subsequent attempts to turn it back on resulted in overheating and shut down within 1 to 2 minutes unless the camera and battery were allowed to cool for over an hour. I don’t believe you’re getting all of the use you need without overheating in presumably 90 to 100°F temperatures in Australia. What you and GoPro are doing here is called gaslighting.

I mean, I’m sure they have bought several 360s to find out what they are doing at their core to stop the overheating. Let’s be real, this isn’t new for gopro just like freezing isn’t new. The 10 overheats at 1080/4k and 5k with actual similar shutdown times. I don’t care if the camera got a bit bigger if it was able to dissipate heat better.

Yeah well, these tips definitely don’t work. The work you do is just very “light”. I use them for fishing so it’s always turned on. I have everything turned off and only film 2.7K 50fps but it still overheats about every 10 to 15 minutes. Never had this problem with my GoPro 9 and 8 with the same settings. Battery’s overheated so often that after 3 weeks one of the battery’s already died… GoPro failed with the GoPro 11 big time

My Hero 10 black would overheat just as fast, with literally 100mph wind flowing directly over it. It's a shit design. GoPro's customer service said that in order to keep it from overheating, I would have to limit my video to 30fps. That was their "official fix". If its cold out, or you are skiing or doing water sports, its fine. But a lot of us use these cameras on motorcycles at track days where we are going 160mph and they STILL overheat like crazy...

My GoPro 11 overheats 4k 60 or 4k 30 after 5-10 minutes of recording outside on a tripod. I try to protect it from the sun but it's pretty difficult to do as I'm shooting content in my yard. I didn't find any useful information in this video considering you're not using your camera in a way that it's designed and marketed to be used so your video is moot.

Mhmm, my story is I've never owned a GoPro, now I have got the Hero 11 as a birthday gift. I have recorded some shots at 4k 60fps in Albania while i was hiking at 12° Celsius outside, mostly shadowed conditions with a lot of cool wind came from the mountains. The GoPro overheated embarrassingly after 9 minutes. The point of air flow, because it is an action camera i will say is just not right here. There is a good known way in the industry to cool the whole system down via heat conduction very well. I think there are some major flaws in the design of cooling down the sensor, and battery. Because once it's get hot, you're battery will sucked empty and if you wait 10 minutes or so, you can record only 4 minutes or less this time and it will overheat much faster after another break, there is a lot of heat which cannot dissipate out of the system. I've lost a lot of good footage, it isn't fun to have this camera for making footage. I have "recorded" and talked a lot while hiking into a camera which wasn't even recording! It's not reliable...

I had it overheat at 5k30 but I was inside trying to record something stationary and it was around 75° with zero air movement. After a couple hours of recording relatively consistently it overheated. I’m going to attempt to record more later outside, but I doubt I’ll experience the same issue.

Just bought my first GoPro. The 11 black. Ive been using a $10 action cam mounted to the chin of my mountain bike helmet. And used it for snowboard seasons as well. Same camera 3 years. No issues. The 11 black was on sale at costco with 2 batteries and SD card. So i took the plunge. what a piece of shit. Just went MTBing 2 days ago. Had it mounted to the chin of my helmet. About 15 min later i heard it beep. It turned itself off. Tried to turn it on. Got over heat warning. Tf? How is this so trash but theyve now made 12 if them and people buy them? After 8 videos while riding where it would overheat. I went from 4k to 1080p. It recorded without issue for 25min until i got back to my car. Wow. A $239 camera has to be down graded to the performance of a $10 knock off to not die on me. 90 days to return for a refund. Guess i'll have to dish out the cash for a insta 360 x4
