What do you mean by "freezing problem"? I have one that does not turn on, does not have light on when plugged in, and dose not respond to reset sequence. I have multiple batteries and tried them all. Was your unit in the same situation or did yours turn on at least?

2020 and this fix still works! I wrote off my HERO 4 as 'frozen forever' and it's been in a drawer ever since. I pulled it out, watched your video, ordered the part and fixed it myself. So far, it's working great--like the camera I always wanted but froze constantly. Thanks, man!

My Silver has the same problems.. endless freezing. GoPro should be taken to court for this. They knowingly shipped a crap product. This is unbelievable for such an expensive piece of gear. Clearly there are some top GoPro people who don't give a f about customer satisfaction.. bunch of jerks.

Thanks for the video! I've heard rumors that the image sensor was to blame, but getting any kind of confirmation was hard - and when dealing with GoPro impossible. It's great to see confirmation that someone has solved their problem by doing this. I've ordered my image sensor replacement and can't wait to do the fix. You get bonus points for only using a Swiss Army Knife lol!

Hello, I bought my go pro silver 4 in 2015. I did not have any problems this year. One year later, it started to have some issues : even if I can switch on the camera, the lcd screen remains black and the camera finally crashes so I gotta force it to switch off (the famous problem we all cope with). I surprinsingly managed to fix it by downgrading the firmware (because the firmware on the camera was the most recent) and resetting the camera. In 2017, the problems started to become really serious and classical firmware changes did not work. I consequently used the deep freezer trick : you put the camera without the battery in a freezer and remove it 2 hours later : this enables the camera to work but only for a short time (a few hours to a few days), all the more as the images taken by the camera are sometimes green or violet. Of course, the problems started after my warranty ended LOL. I consequently think the image sensor is abnormally sensitive to thermic variations and that I should change it to fix my problem. What do you think about this :) ?

Can't promise you that, my friend. I took a risk and replaced the sensor, because I saw common problems (or symptoms) with hundreds of other GoPro camera owners. Have a search on forums if somebody else has that same problem. It could be something else, like faulty motherboard, which costs more than the sensor. In my opinion, there isn't too many things to replace, so there's a high chance the problem will be solved when you replace something. Just make sure you don't spend more than a new GoPro camera would cost. Thanks for your question, tho! And good luck with your camera!

Oh that actually might be because of low speed of SD card. There’s a list of sd cards that are GoPro approved. Make sure it is according to GoPro. Usually the specs are just a “Class 10” sd card. If ur recording high quality video your sd card may not be able to write that data due to low speed. I hope that helps

Help me. The gopro i have was working, and then it wont turn on anymore. I have tried to use other battery but still not powering on. I pluged it to my pc and the pc doesnt recognize it.. You think it is the mother thats already dead?

Seems like the motherboard is fried. You could try changing it, but I’d suggest buying a newer GoPro at this point if you have an opportunity 🙆🏻‍♂️

I just got off the phone with them moments ago and they could not confirm or deny that the image sensor is faulty. But, they offered me a 20% off coupon like they do everyone else. Sure, let me spend another $300 on another piece of crap from GoPro. I am gonna try this sensor.

Zanzebek Not yet. My camera gets a purple hue color on the screen when I record in low light. when it's really sunny out its fine but as it gets darker the image turns purple. I don't have warranty on it anymore so gopro won't help me. I see a lot of people having the same problem on the internet but I haven't found a way to repair it. Thanks for the reply

Sounds like a mother board issue. If you still want you might want to change the motherboard. But there’s a chance it won’t help and you lose extra money - so do it on your own risk 🙌

I’m not sure about the years, my friend. You better refer to your Hero with its model number. What is it, a Hero 5? Cany day for sure about putting Hero4 sensor into other models. Probably won’t work, maybe even won’t fit. So try to keep looking for your exact model sensor. I hope everything works out for you, man. Oh, try to contact iFixit, maybe they know wether they have the spare part for your Hero model

It's been a while since this video was posted but I just wanted to share my pain and let you know that it didn't work for me. I bought the image sensor form ifixit, replaced it, and... 3/4 secs after turning the GoPro on, it still freezes :(. Now I do not even see the image in the display anymore -_-'. God why have you abandoned me!!!

I'm so sad to hear it didn't work out for you :( I believe you're the first one! I guess you have officially tried EVERYTHING. But when I did my research to fix the freezing, I had a more expensive way as a plan B - replacing the motherboard. HOWEVER, at this point the spendings are becoming close to the price of a new GoPro. If you can, I'd suggest you purchase a newer GoPro, they seem to not be freezing anymore. Something from years 2017-2019. If you can't do that at this point in your life, you're left with one option - replacing the motherboard... Maybe God just gave you active youtube community like this one here to help you out :) Anyways, I reeeeeally hope I'm being somewhat helpful to you

10 months later now, is it still working? i bought a hero4 used for $50 and of course it freezes, but it may be worth fixing and this wont be a problem for me, in terms of total investment vs potential outcome. mine will sometime freeze in the menu, sometimes it freezes while recording. sometimes it freezes with no sd card, sometimes it freezes charging, sometimes it freezes just being turned on and sometimes it turns on and then right back off. i am not convinced i do not have a battery problem. as it had three batteries and they are all scuffed up and 2 of them a just a tiny bit swollen. question number two: did your hero4 ever lock up in the menus? ok, i several more questions, also how often did it lock up when it did? also did your hero 4 get hot? mine gets very warm, i have not measured the temperature of the external case, but i would guess its close to 90 degees f, not Celsius. thanks for the video man. you video is the first bit of useful information i have come across on this topic.

Hey man! Thanks for the comment! It does seem that you have exactly the problem I had. Yes, the sensor solved the problem and it still works fine. Although I did give the Hero4 to someone else. But I hear no complains from them. It does heat up wether working fine or freezing. I guess it’s just how GoPro works. So I don’t think you can do anything about the heating problem. I had all sorts of freezing problems, including the ones you’ve mentioned. After changing the sensor, I had no freezing issue at all. I didn’t notice that the part was listed as “used” tho. Didn’t matter to me at the time. But it arrived to me in an unsealed new package (as seen on the video). I can’t tell you for sure whether you should buy the part 100%, but from what you wrote I guess it’s the same problem I had, and in that case the new sensor will solve the problem :)

It would freeze at an unexpected random rate. Yes sometimes even when browsing through the menu. It was impossible and frustrating. I tried everything, just like you. No sd card, no battery and charging, updating firmware, downgrading firmware, pitting the camera into cold weather, bought a new as card, and all had the same results - camera froze up 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hey! Sorry, I thought I pressed the send button... So it's definitely not about image sensor! You better dig deeper into forums, cuz I haven't faced this issue. My best guess is that the motherboard fried somehow. Also, try using a working battery from another GoPro, just in case idk. And good luck with your GoPro, bro!

Thanks for the reply Zanzebek, I tried another working battery with an external charger and it worked! Seems my USB port is faulty. There are tutorials for how to fix it but I ended up just buying a fix service from eBay as I've never soldered anything in my life. Thanks for your help.
