GoPro + Gyroflow stabilization test / How smooth is too smooth?

Instead of using the built-in hypersmooth, you can stabilize your footage in post-production. There's an official GoPro app for it, called ReelSteady but there's a way better (in my opinion) tool: Gyroflow. It's free and open-source, has tons of features, and RUNS ON LINUX!
Sometimes default smoothing is just too much, making the video feel like it was shot on a drone, ruining the dynamics of the ride/run or any footage. As usual, the more control you have, the better.

Hi, What GoPro Model do u use? Can u screenshot ur complete gyroflow settings? What recording settings in GoPro? Hypersmooth on or off? Wide or linear? 16:9 or 4:3? Thanks in advance 😊

Hi! It's an old Hero 7 Black. If you want to make use of Gyroflow, you have to record with hypersmooth turned OFF. The raw footage will be very shaky, but the camera still saves the gyroscope data into the MP4 files. I used 4:3 in wide mode. This uses the whole sensor on all sides, this way you can get a larger field of view than in 16:9 wide (kinda like superview, but without the stretching). For this video i didn't change anything on the default settings, except for the Smoothness value (and the video resolution, of course)

For surf what do you sugest me?

The nearest sea is 400km from me, so you might be asking the wrong person :D I would try using as little stabilization as possible while making the footage watchable, with horizon lock turned on so the sea is always level on the screen. For these kind of scenes i would record using the full sensor (largest resolution) and obviously no internal stabilization. This way you will have the most possibilities to play with. For these kind of videos i often use 4:3 ratio, so i can crop later to 16:9, deciding which part of the video is better

Will it work well with low light footage?

Yes, I found that it does a bit better job than the built-in hypersmooth stabilization. It won't solve the issue of shaking motion blur, that's the downside of digital stabilization. When the stabilization is too strong, it's quite disturbing to look at those micro-jitters that come from tiny motion blur shakes on the otherwise smooth footage. Reducing the stabilization will make the whole image shake more, but then it will feel more natural to have some imperfections on the video. Might be just a personal preference though. What i would recommend for low light is to find a way to secure your camera as tight as possible. If you use a chest strap, pull the straps tighter. I sometimes use a mouth mount which gives the best stabilization since i bite on it, so it's tightly attached to my skull which is a large heavy object, and has its own stabilization. It's a bit more risky, of course :D

ohh, i see. Well, for low light, it's still the gopro max (or i guess, maybe even other 360's) is the best action camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/hITbYZauZtelh80 I know it's old, but it handles motion blur a lot better
