GoPro Hero 10 vs Insta 360 One X2. THE GREAT DEBATE!!!

First of all, thank you for the great video and detailed comparison. There are some common problems with how people use a regular action camera. Have you ever regarded like these: "Man, I missed that shot"? "Ah, I wish I could have recorded that."? "This shot is trash, I should have put the camera this/that way."? "I'm wondering what was he/she doing while I'm recording this."? The major benefit of a 360 camera is that u can get the multi-angle clips from just ONE single shot. You will almost never miss anything. I mean literally hardly ever. For example in your video, if you were riding with a company(or your family perhaps), u could make tons of different videos about yourself, your wingman, your family, your road track view, audience view, and so much more with just ONE single shot. (for GoPro, probably you would have to stop multi times for changing positions, and you would still have the same problem afterward. Furthermore, you will still miss something in the 2nd example) Imagine that a pair of F-22 suddenly fly over your head during your ride( or maybe UFOs? who knows), you might have to stop the bike and change the angle of your GoPro, or take off your helmet during riding just for that shot, not to mention it's probably not enough time and super dangerous for you to do that. But with a 360 camera, you do NOT have to do that. Just reframe it from that ONE shot on your cellphone and put it on Instagram right at the scene. Not to mention that the app from insta360 is just so much convenient to use for reframing video. You would probably be surprised what you could get from just in one shot. A big pro for the App, you do NOT have to download clips into your phone, you can just edit them directly on the camera. That's a huge time and storage saving! I think those are the key factors a 360 camera exists. and not even a GoPro 100 can beat that. (hope I'm wrong) Anyways, they are both great action cameras. Just pick the one that suits your playstyle.

I love learning, and hearing all about this. I hear all the top Vloggers struggle with GoPro, yet it seems to be the camera of choice. 360 has really upped their game, I hope it pushes GoPro to become better as well. That's why i stayed on a gopro 7 or 8 on my helmet. Because of the workflows while driving and also the trust I have in these cameras. I was hoping the hero10 would restore the trust lost with the 9 but it doesn't seem to be the case. As you mentionned when you have 2 - 3 camera to think about, turn on, manage, ensure nothing moving too much or dropping, you are obviously loosing focus on the street and the level of security go down. At the end of the day these frustrations can make you loose the freedom that is the main feeling of any bikers 😊 thanks for sharing these a good therapy debate to share ✌

The Media Mod is a hassle for swapping batteries. Got rid of mine and got the mic adapter instead.

It's easy to see your frustration with the current action camera technology - even more so knowing it's your area of expertise. My view is it's possibly because the action cam scene is fairly new and manufacturers are quick, probably too quick, to introduce new models on to the market for reasons of profit. As with many PC Operating Systems and apps Corporations are only too happy for the paying public to field test their products for them after having paid premium prices. The same could be said of action camera hardware. Sometimes it pays to let other people test the new models for us for a few months before we commit to buying. Then again I'm usually a sucker for a shiny new gadget!!

Hi Dave as I have said before I use a hero 6 and 7 both were used purchases and work great with the right SD card I wish I could stretch to an insta would love to add those special shots but alas will have to wait till there are a few going used and cheap not yet a while great video you will have to do some tech ones on filming editing etc and spread your expertise and talent 👍👍

Great video and I feel your frustration. I'm holding on to my GoPro 7 & 8, the only attraction I have for the 9 or 10 is the horizon leveling feature -- everything else added to the 9 & 10 isn't completely necessary, but certainly nice. I just ordered the One X2 and still have my original One X which may end up semi-permanently attached to the rear of my Tiger 900 Rally Pro to film other riders when I'm in a group (rare) or as an effects camera. The GoPro will remain on my helmet chin mount and the X2 will move around for other effects shots -- which I've picked up from your other videos. Keep'em coming! Loving your work..... I think it can be sporadic with GoPros (my Hero 7 loves to freeze every 2 minutes and will only ever be remedied by removing the battery as you describe). My Hero 10 (with media mod) has never given me a moment's problem even with after market batteries other than having piss-poor battery life. I bought the Dji Osmo 3 but it got nicked off the bike! 😭

Great topic. I just got the insta 360 one x2 to add to my dual gopro hero 8 black setup. Never had crashing or freezing problems with the gph8 black, I'm using telesin batteries and different sandisk memory cards on them and they just work. I've seen your videos on the gph9 issues and you ditching that and buying the 10. Good luck, hope you find a solution to your issues on the 10. Agree on just having the insta 360 as the effects cam. Also, if you haven't tried the movo acm400 microphone, please do, as I've found that they are really great for motovlog purposes, they may not have the same sibilance as your high end mic but it's worth a try. Hope you do, you just might like it! Cheers!

G day Dave thanks for the info on cameras im not yet confident to spend money on a camera (ive only just bought a Cardo ), I know im behind the times and both my wife and i ride so id love to video our rides and it seems a lot of money to fork out to have the camera stuff up plus id have to learn all that goes with downloading .cutting and doin the computer thing , So it leaves me to enjoy your videos until i can be confident that if i buy something it,ll bloody work. I had a sony fdr x3000 which regrettably I got rid of. It came with a mic jack as standard! Picture was great, never crashed, overheated etc etc. Gopro, insta and every other make of camera are ripping us of to get all these accessories. Very annoying and irritating. Love your vlogs BTW. Thanks 🙏

I may have found the answer to your prayers! Well it wasn't me it was Richy Vida. I am still using the 9. I used to turn my camera on and off while out. Save battery and card! This makes for problems. I now use a big enough sd card, and a battery pack. Turn on my camera and DON'T turn it off unless I really need to. So far this has worked! Oh I may have stolen one of your lines in my last video! Opps sorry!

Love your videos Dave. I do like your 360 footage coz, it's really You or Max Wrist(usually nearly dying riding ;like a twat or getting others injured)on that front. Insta360 really need to develop the One R series. The modularity, is a good concept, and the 1" sensor of the Leica mod is great for getting a few more stops of light but, the 360 mod doesn't stitch together properly yet. Either that or the One X 3 must have 2 1" sensors next because phones are starting to get them and there's no excuse. DJI's new modular action cam just wouldn't work on a bike. You're right about their new wireless setup, it looks great.

Thanks for the review. I'm debating between gopro 10 or the insta360 x3. I like the drone-ish effect and able to see what I want to view in post. Plus I could place the X3 on top of my bicycle helmet and street motorcycle helmet as a 360 dashcam since a rider can get hit from any side. I’m not sure how gnarly conditions you ride your R1200GS but have seen them go through single tracks just as gracefully as the EXCs (with the right rider of course). I have a ktm 350 exc-f (mostly for forest riding) and a suzi drz400s (mostly for dual sport/adventure rides). I ride single tracks, dble tracks, fire roads, crown land (the big area under hydro towers), gravel and asphalt roads. Do you think that the X3 is too fragile for the single track, especially with leave and twigs that are sometimes overhead along my path? I would mount it on the centre of my helmet with it extended about 30-60 cm up. I was also told (from other KZbin reviews on the X3) to have the sides aiming towards the front and back so I have a lens on both sides. I'm not sure if I agree with that aiming since I would probably export the front or back images so prefer no trace of stitching lines. But still, my concern is scratching the lenses or the screen display breaking when hitting the smaller branches. Ditto with the bike going down in mud, grass, sand, while attempting to cross over logs or hitting trees (yes dirt bikers accidently do that, lol). Is the X3 too fragile for forest single tracks or is the gp10 significantly more durable? At least the gp10’s lens cover can be changed but not sure how strong the housing is. How about when another dual sport rider is in front on gravel roads creating a bit of a dust cloud on those dry days? Will those dust/particles scratch the X3 lenses? The other option was to use their sticky lens guards or just placing the X3 in their dive case to prevent the lens/display from getting scratched and damaged but that is another hit in the quality of footage? Due to X3’s 1080p framing taken from the 360 image, I’m also debating if I should hold off until the X4 to come out hoping it has a 3 or 4k cropping frame. I prefer the 360 feature but am hesitant due to the image framing quality and the lens (or display) damage. Any other suggestions as there isn’t many X3 on dirt bike reviews readily available so I figured I should ask you since you ride an ADV/dual sport bike. Thanks in advance.

Hi. If your riding is mainly dirt bike style then forget the X3. You will scratch a lens and the repair is approx €180. Get a GoPro or better still a DJI Osmo Action 3. You can replace the lens filters on both these cameras for €20. Look at some of my latest vids on the Osmo Action 3, it’s brilliant. Then I only use the X3 for effects shots and not as the main cam. Also, the more plastic, glass etc you put in front of a lens (like the rain housing) the more you diminish the quality of the picture. Best of luck, it’s a minefield out there. 👌

I do not have "experience" yet with the GoPro 10, although I will soon. I picked one up for myself a little bit ago and have been spending some time learning the ins and outs of it. I wasn't in too much of a hurry as it was -20°C yesterday. 🥶 Not yet riding weather around here. I was just getting ready to order up some accessories for this unit, media mod etc, but your comments are giving me pause. You mentioned that you have two of them. Are both crashing? Does it matter how they are configured, my meaning is, does the one without any accessories suffer the same issues? Oh, and thank you for the heads up that this video was forthcoming. 👍

My Hero 10 is seemingly finally behaving itself, I can't be doing with the Media Mod though, makes the camera huge, and such a faff to change batteries, so I use the old microphone adaptor with it. The quality of the video is fantastic, but the not knowing if it is going to work gets tiring very quickly.

Funny I have no had any card crash issues with the H9 or H10. I have had it where I need to remove the battery but never a card issue, ever? FYI I run my GoPros conservatively at 4K and 30 frames per second, I wonder if that makes a difference? Stick with it…

Great video and there is little I would disagree with. If I thought the Hero 10 was going to be reliable all the time I would have one on the front of my helmet tomorrow. Carol and I are doing a fly ride holiday soon (not the Canaries) and we have one chance to capture the experience. I'm taking two Insta 360 One X2 and probably my Hero 7 for close up or indoor where I don't want a super wide view. My view I will take the slight hit on quality and over stabilisation in favour of reliability, battery life and integration with the Rode for our dual audio.

I’m looking to upgrade my GoPro Hero 4 helmet cam and I just can’t get myself to buy a 10. They’re clunky beasts hanging off your helmet (especially offroad helmets with a long chin bar), and I despise how you have to shell out for the ugly impractical media mod and max lens mod. I’m looking at the Insta360 Go 2. Why: it’s small and light, a helmet cam doesn’t need a display, the magnetic mount will be superb for taking it on and off to pop it in the charger and the image quality is good. There’s an affordable USB-powered mount to power it from a power bank. Cons: it has 32gb non expandible memory. It can’t record from an external microphone… I’m looking at recording sound with a Zoom F2-BT, which seems a foolproof method of recording sound on our noisy bikes (no gain levels to set, 32 bit recording captures everything and you normalize in post). But then you add syncing audio to the workflow. Or: record sound on a second camera like you do with the One X2. But then you’ll either have to deal with a cable, or the Rode Wireless Go which are 2 more battery powered devices to go manage. Yep…the ideal setup is not there yet.

I can't comment on why GoPro are bad at customer service and why their devices have bugs but I am also certain the reason no one tries to compete with them it wasn't until the Hero 4 that GoPro started making money, they traded at a loss those first few years. What company wants to lose money trying to compete with an established brand. The irony being if Sony or someone came up with a product that was as good / competitive and worked it would knock GoPro off the top step.

I’ve just switched to Sony from Canon in my broadcast world and their products are incredible. I agree, if they tackled the action cam market as I know they’ve just entered the drone market, their products are always superior because they have listened to their customers for forty years.
