Probably but I bought all the accessories too! The Sony menu system is a pain in the arse however. I have the RX100Mk4 & the RZ10mk3 both using the same 3000 layers of menu. It can't belong before Sony scrap the whole system and go for touch screen across their range. Couldn't come along sooner imho. The difference between the image and audio quality between teh two is night and day and I'm pleased to see the Sony buries the GoPro.

You can fix the internet / wifi issue. On your iPhone, go into the wifi settings after you connect to the X3000. Note the IP address and subnet and then change from dhcp to static. Input the IP address and bang! Any requests for internet will bypass the wifi and go out on cellular (not sure if you need to have wifi assist on or not). I hope that all works as I'm doing from memory... but I can confirm that there is a way to make this work as I'm doing it currently.

Really comprehensive review. Very well done! We have both cameras and it is interesting how we shoot 2.7 K with the Go pro but use audio from the Sony etc. I have to say you forgot (at least I think you did) to mention the battery life of the Sony. It seems to have almost three times the battery power of the GoPro. I will find that I will be doing a shoot with my B cams and the GoPro will have died. Also we have only been able to get the GoPro to shoot 4 K in the traditional wide angle and Sony can be more traditional linear. However, the Sony is new. I got mine just about the same time you did. I haven't spent as much time filming and getting to know it like you have done. Very nice job and great review, as always. Heidi.

Just got my Sony FDR-X3000, will use it this weekend alongside my GoPro Hero 3 and 4 to see what it can do. I shoot live music, and first thing I have found is don't let the Sony run for too long in its waterproof case. It shuts down from overheating after about 30 minutes. But the 1/4-20 on the bottom, image quality, sound quality, and high bitrate 4K are all thumbs up in my book.

I have both, it's strange but i prefer the GoPro. It's very very much more comfortable to use, I can shoot great RAW photos with it, I get a better preview of what I am doing (also using the Apple Watch app) and voice controls are great. GoPro also seems much more resistant than the Sony to me, and Superview is fantastic

GoPro fan boys have invested on all the mounts and will make endless excuses. Gopro had it's day and it's slipping. The stabilization to me seem like a deal breaker, I just don't see how you argue around it. For and action cam it's about action cam to not have stabilization is a crime. Sony takes it to a whole new level. I'm sorry, but Sony picture quality and colors are better. Gopro owned the market, the competition is passing it by. I just don't understand what is happening to them. They need to really push forward or other guys like Sony will push them out of the market.

(At least in my Country, so much those people believe that Beats can give some great quality product while the fact it doesn't)" Especially in my country, those people believe, a recognized brands can give u more PRESTIGE & people might sayin' personally like: "WOW! He/she use Beats! He/she might be rich or at least know the good brands 4 real!" No matter the quality & much aspect to see that actually. Which as we know, quality ofc is much more important than just taking a thing with recognized brand but the quality still questionable for it's credibility. Loved your review! We bought the Sony camera after your last video and took it for a spin, but it was just too buggy to keep. The GPS never connected (over in the UK), the camera kept recording upside down, and the remote would constantly timeout when trying to connect. Was fun testing it out though, and it inspired us to do a comparison video with a DJI Osmo Mobile so definatley worth it. Can't wait to see what you get us to buy next.
@NicMediaDesign7 жыл бұрын
The upside down recording is not a problem of the camera, but about how you set it up.

I went through all the menu options and never managed to get it fixed. Thanks for reminding me about the menu system though. I felt like I was going back into the stone ages trying to figure out what each symbol meant, and how you needed to set the time and date to get the thing going. Even the filenaming convention for when you try taking your videos out C00001, C00002, such nonsense. Will definatley have to make a review on it. You should make one too, would be ace to see your workflow with it.
@NicMediaDesign7 жыл бұрын
It is the "flip" option (two rounded arrows pointing in the same direction while being arranged in a circular shape). The FDR X3000s menu is at least as good as the GoPro ones. With the GoPro it might now be faster to set things up (due to the touchscreen) when you are filming in mild conditions, yet as soon as you are underwater or wearing gloves (snowboarding, skiing, motocross...) it is as much of a hassle as setting up the GoPro with the buttons.

I have an older Sony Actioncam, and the one thing I wish is to adopt the GoPro mount connector vs the thumbscrew tripod approach. I’ve lost a Sony when doing hardcore downhill biking, as the vibration caused the screw to come loose. Whereas the GoPro approach - there’s a high confidence itll stay mounted.🗜

Great review. I personally prefer the GoPro form factor and I tried hard to own one, but I finally returned the Session and Hero 5 back and opted for the FDR X3000. I originally had the Sony HDR AZ1. The FDR X3000 is amazing. The GoPros are not bad choices, far from it. At that point it becomes a matter of personal preferences in regard to the features vs image/sound quality.

Hi, this is good stuff. It was interesting to compare it with my own experience. My first GoPro was a Hero 2, a real game changer. Today I also use the cheaper Hero cameras, far less painful if they get damaged. My main sports camera was a GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. For every day shooting I use Sony's FDR-AX53 and it's predecessor the HDR-PJ780VE, both have the floating lens. When the FDR X3000R came out, it seemed logical to get one instead of a Hero 5 as bells and whistles make life harder. I use them in an enviroment where they are sometimes subject to vibration and GoPro's do not deal with that well. So far I am pleased with the Sony, but just to throw a spanner in the works, the cheapo GoPro Hero camera (recently dropped from their range) produces a better picture than either of the more expensive cameras and it's simple one button action means it is hard to screw things up. I recently posted 4 videos using the 3 cameras, if you have a moment take a look, your comment would be welcome.

Honestly, it comes down to usability. Imagine quality (with post processing in the GOPRO) is very comparable. Usability, GoPro with their touch screen and mounts wins. I've had both Sony and GoPro in the past, and I prefer the GP.
@yudinemesis7 жыл бұрын
Post processing is not gonna help you that much simply because Sony Action Cam is better hardware and software (i'm not talking about UI). With 1.62 µm pixel size (photosite) the image sensor in Sony Action has bigger pixel than the one in GoPro Hero 5/4 (1.55 µm) so the sensor in Sony will produce cleaner video in low light and higher dynamic range in daylight. And unlike GoPro cameras Sony action cam use Full Pixel readout with no pixel bining or line skiping + higher bitrate 100Mbps so the video is not only has better details but also better for post processing. When it comes to usability the physical button on Sony maybe not as easy to use as the touch screen on GoPro but it much more realiable because no matter the conditions it will always works (unless you broke it) unlike the touch screen on GoPro that will be useless in wet condition or when you wearing thick gloves. And lets not forget about the remote live that allows you see and control the camera without draining your smartphone battery when you not holding the camera like motovloging for example.

I never understood the mount debate. Sony has a tripod mount, which means that you are free to use absolutely any kind of mounting solution available in the world, including the GoPro mounts. I've purchased a $6 security camera mount for a wall. It had a 3 segment 6 inch rod and a ball mount at the end. Combined with a $12 suction cup mount, stick it anywhere you like (I even stuck it on a helmet as a temporary solution for a friend). And Sony has all the GoPro equivalent (and even more advanced at times) mounts that are specific to action cams, as well. I really have no idea what the hell are people referring to.

Thanks! I love the FDR-X3000! I was all set to buy a GoPro or the FLY360 until I saw your review. It was hard to find, and accessories are non-existent, like the screen protector (a must have!).The PlayMemories app for sony is awesome and turns the camera on and off with Bluetooth! The only issue is it's not the app you might expect... you want Play Memories mobile app not the Sony Action Cam app...both app's work well but you need to figure out which is does what ActionCam is for editing not recording. I personally wouldn't waste the money on the remote unless you don't have an app or are running multiple cameras at once and even that can be done with the app.

I bought the x3000r from the Sony store that was closing down half price (£250) for my holiday, the guy in the store said that so that make the sensors for go pro also. I've mostly used the camera underwater and the image quality is good.....however in hot weather the camera fogs up in the housing so you have to keep it cool and covered before you get in the water, and being WiFi the action viewer (watch) doesn't work in the water either. I still rate it highest than my son's go pro. 8/10

Sony is impressive - definitely has the advantage over the GoPro, I wonder how Olympus's action cam compares? Personally I'm holding out for the Yi 4k+ and the Yi Erida Drone (I'm guessing we'll see release dates for both within the next few days!) - 4k 60fps 100mbps...... holy cow that will be awesome! The Erida drone looks to be similar in concept to the Karma (detachable gimbal, packable, comes with 4k+ camera), but this time done right. Fingers crossed they both reflect the typical budget friendliness that Yi is known for; I've heard maybe $200 for the 4k+ and $500 for the Erida! I'm tempted by the 4k Yi camera that's already available - they're bundling it with a miniaturized 3 axis gimbal and an extension stick for just $400.

Very good sum up of many practical points. It points quite clearly to GoPro business is built to expensive adapters, just like Apple recently. The stabilization capability of the Sony is amazing. I don't go in line with your claim on pic color quality to be better with the Sony though. Not sure your understanding of color correction is complete. Usually it means a bit more than just click auto balance in FCPX. It would be good to see if cameras feature a fixed exposure setting and how they compare then.
