GoPro Hero 8 Freeze Fix

In this weeks video I offer you some good advice if you've ever had your GoPro Hero 8 freeze the video, yet the audio keeps rolling. Extremely frustrating when it happens as you always loose valuable footage - I know, I've been there many times.
In this video I give you some tried and tested solutions to fix your GoPro and prevent the dreaded freeze out that can happen.

I can confirm that this is happening with telesin aftermaker battaries but not with the original that camera came with.

Thanks for this video, save my sanity by full formatting the card instead of quick format/format from gopro. Fortunately i didnt get the issue with the battery, i guess theres a lot of telesin batteries that are counterfeit and substandard in terms of amp draw.

Thank you so much for this informative video! I recently experienced this myself whilst doing some very high-movement watersports activities (jetski, banana boat and jet boat) with my GoPro Hero 10 Black, a high-speed writing SD Card but using a Telesin Battery -- with standard GoPro settings (1080p / 60fps) and ALMOST ALL MY FOOTAGES were the same as yours. I cried when I got home when I was exporting the footages as those were footages for a collaboration with the Watersports Services here in the Philippines. Gladly enough they understood and were empathetic about the corrupted footages and did not get mad at me. But still, they were fond digital memories lost because of this issue. Thank you once again for your info and tips! I will be sure to apply them when I use it next time. One more thing though, do you have any TIPS for avoiding this issue when using a WATERPROOF CASE? Does heat caused by the housing also contribute to this?

Not really. I use a waterproof case too as I often place the camera in rivers or in high impact muddy areas on my bike. I can't say I've had an issue with over heating

Hello buddy. Very crisp and informative video. I am facing same issue with hero 8. Till one year it worked fine. I am using the original sd card that i got with camera bundle pack. Formatted it once. Software version in camera Is upto date as per Quick aap in phone when connected to camera it doesn't show any update available. Tried resetting the camera Didn't help. Battery also i am using the same which i got in the bundle pack. I have one hero 7 battery also and when i use that the video recording lasts longer before freezing while i change to hero 8 battery, ut freezes quickly. Although i still l think battery is the culprit but don't want to directly buy mew one before researching completely as it costs 20$. Do you have any suggestions

Thanks for the really useful information, I also had the same problem occasionally but after several setbacks I decided to format and reinstall the firmware with the GoPro method but the machine no longer starts. Have you ever had this problem? Thank you

No, I can't say I have. I still use the same cameras to this day, so not sure why you're camera won't start 🤔

I still use two GoPro Hero 3's one is a silver, and the other is white. Yes the quality is not the greatest, but I have never had an issue with the cameras failing during any circumstance. Take care, ride safe.

The image stabilisation on the new gen models is on point. That's what drew me away from my Hero 3's. Thanks for the comments, very much appreciated

same issue. even using its original batteries. very annoying. I missed some clips! one telesin works fine but seems faster to drain.

I started with 2 hero 4 blacks that I used on my drones, they were always locking up, the only way to get them going again was to remove the battery. I noticed that if I didn't power them from the drone battery and only used the cameras internal battery they never locked up, I now use a Hero 6 Black on the bike and that unfortunately does the same thing. I often go for morning 'till night rides and it's heads or tails as to whether you'll get through the day without a lock up or two, on the other hand the two Garmin Virb Ultra 30's I have front and rear never give any problems, such a shame Garmin stopped producing action cameras.

Had exactly the same issue with my GPH8 whilst riding in upper Teasdale. Turned out to be the sd card…. You know the problem I also had with the drone; memory card? Unsure - but i try to remember to format my card before each use now, all seems well……..so far.

My gopro 8 is having the same problem. In my case, it occurs when the battery is about 10% left, and it was not solved by replacing the SD card or replacing the battery. It seems to be a flaw in the GoPro 8 I think.

Hello. No, not that I'm aware of I'm afraid. I rather think it's a case of total loss. Of course the 8's are far from new now, and whilst I still run 8's, my thoughts do flit from time to time on upgrades. It's more about justifying it rather than a need.

I noticed this that one of my aftermarket battery is troublesome. I kept using the original batteries but now the original freezes. Is there a way to fix or repair the video file that froze?

Again, I don't think so. Make sure the firmware is updated regularly and if the batteries are dying quickly, they may need replacing?

Pretty much as the video says. Primarily by using only original GoPro batteries and keeping the firmware up to date. That certainly works for me as I'm still running the Hero 8 and don't have these issues anymore. I hope this helps and good luck 👍

I recorded my wedding and this happened, very upset with it freezing like your videos have. Is there a way i can recover my video back?

I'm not aware of a way you can get the video or audio back when the camera has glitched. It's wildly frustrating. That said, after ditching the aftermarket batteries, I don't seem to have had a repeat. The only issue I have is with water ingress into the type C port - but thats more to do with the motorcycle helmet set up I'm running rather than the camera. I've found by using a silicone outer case, this has reduced water ingress massively. Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

There is lots of this type of tech that is not cheap but don't work as they should another piece of kit is comms total rubbish i don't think people complain enough when they go wrong like many things in the UK we shrug our shoulders and go and buy another one
