Gopro Hero 8 Hypersmooth 2.0 Test - FPV

Recently upgraded the cruiser camera, the hypersmooth is a bit more natural than the hero 7, still gets a little weird on sharp movements but overall a decent improvement. The footage itself is super nice with a very crisp picture and really nice separation of colors. Shot 2.7k 60fps, 120 shutter speed, ISO locked at 100, ND16 filter, exported 4k.

@@inZaneFPV "Elbow Bump" - I just had an epic session at my mates 100 acre Vineyard, his driveway is FPV heaven, a tunnel of trees about 600m long, I'm still learning to tear around in the trees but getting there, had some mean wipeouts, I was committing to the dive and gap into driveway and at times backing out at the last second if not going well, haha, it gets ugly fast! I finally got into it, it's a whole new skill flying around and under a tree canopy, so much fun though. Making a new vid now.

Beautiful! What post processing did you use to blur and saturate the color? It definitely makes the video more natural than the stock footage.

Sorry for the late reply dude, my bad! The blur is a product of locking the gopro shutter speed to twice what the frame rate is. I recorded in 60fps so a shutter speed of 1/120 gives a nice creamy look to it. You then compensate the overexposure with an ND filter, this one is ND16 but I suggest getting 8,16 and 32 to cover lighting situations, cloudy/sunny/golden hour etc. It took me a while to get my head around it but it's well worth the effort!

Hi Jim, thanks! I use Davinci Resolve to edit and usually export with the 4k preset, medium quality which is still a large file... even though I film in 2.7k, youtube gives it a higher bit rate if you upload in 4k resolution. Happy New Year from New Zealand!

Kobedie I noticed I like the camera quality a bunch more than the 7. If you never owned one before like myself, I’d go with the 8 and not be ready for an upgrade immediately like you would if you went with the 7.

Thanks! Depends on lighting conditions, and where you are flying. If you will transition between open light and shadows, auto is good. If consistent lighting, best to select manual and 1/120 shutter if 60fps, or 1/60 if 30fps for nice creamy footage.

Hi inZane. I am thinking about getting the Hero 8 and using hypersmooth. In all the other video reviews Ive seen with the stabilization on , when you shake/bank the camera the picture remains steady and horizontal. is there a setting in the camera that when you bank your FPV quad or fixed wing aircraft like in a turn the picture also banks? Is there some kind of lag in the bank? Thanks and nice video BTW.

Hi Tom, thanks man. I think what you are describing is Reelsteady, that has a horizon lock option. You film in a particular format and add the effect after. For the onboard Hypersmooth there arent any options like that, it just crops the edges a little so it has room to take out vibrations, no lag really, just a kind of "docile" feel to it that works well for smooth flying.

inZane FPV I want to use the Hero 8 for cloud surfing with a fixed wing FPV. I would like to use hypersmooth 2.0 but as I bank in turns I would like it to bank with the aircraft. I saw yours banked but I was wondering if there is a delay or a special setting.

It's more natural than reelsteady. I love RS for certain shots, its HS x10 really, but it's a little freaky to work with sometimes. At least with with HS you know what to expect.

The 7 is a great camera if you can get one cheap! The 8 is definitely a little nicer though, and looks like it could take a few more hits.

@@inZaneFPV My main concern was with the 8 being you can't change the lens if it breaks in a crash. But the hero 8 also has better bitrate for better video supposedly. If the video isn't much better on the 8 than the 7 then I will just get the 7 and save money but good video quality is what I like. But also I'm going to be uploading to KZbin so there's that?? I wouldn't fly that close to those power lines. I don't think I would fly into them and get stuck, but you never know and you don't want to have to explain to the authorities what you have done. That's an unnecessary risk. Don't do that, just crash into trees like everyone else.
