Stop at 2:47 or 4:24 or 4:28 or any video with motion in the nature and you'll notice why GoPro a clear winnerfor video recoding especially in sports. Lots and I mean ... LOTS of detail is lost in iPhone 12 Pro Max and everything is a little bit blurry, when the image from GoPro could have been a photo as well with so much detail. GoPro is clearly a winner if you consider video recording.

If your just looking for family pix and videos of your kids to post on IG. It makes sense that the camera on your phone will be the most obvious choice. I mean, since you tend to have your phone in hand most times. But if you want to do more like hike. Swim. Fish. Bike. Climb then yeah the GOPRO is king.

The one BIG difference for vlogging is that most users will use the inferior single focal length (not wide) front-facing camera of the iPhone just to be able to frame their shots. Cannot do that with the superior rear-facing camera and becomes a guessing game, not to mention a more troublesome operation pressing the record button from the opposite side. The front-facing camera has ALWAYS been technically inferior in that there is no stabilizer, narrow focal length, and the annoying mirror image that can only be corrected in post.

Let's be real, the best camera is one that you have on hand. To capture small, everyday moments, most people would just do it with their smartphone, as the GoPro would be either in a packpack, or at home, simply out of reach to capture that quick moment. But for hikes, cinematic footage, or action footage, it's way better to have a separate camera like GoPro, if not for anything else, it will preserve the phone battery :)

I’ve used my hero 9 about 6 times lol. iPhones convenience is a GoPro killer. If GoPro added an auto camera roll saver setting that automatically saved videos to my phones camera roll without having to connect Bluetooth or connect to the GoPro app maybe I’d use it more haha

I think 360 cameras are the future of action camera. But the image quality in existing 360 cameras is pixelated mess. Maybe, in future they will get it right

Great comparison of these two camera’s. If your on a budget and not into extreme sports, the iPhone 12 is really all you need. Especially if you a device such as the OM 4 for stability.

I think the GoPro is absolutely perfect at what is is designed to do and I'd say that most people who are buyinga GoPro already know what they'regetting, personally I quite like the fish-eye look for action shots and I actually prefer the more saturated look of the GoPro although you could easily just shoot with the flat colour profile and colour correct in post

Well done video, completely satisfied my curiosity on the subject - thank you. Have had my iPhone 12 mini for a year almost and just discovered today that it can film video with the wide lens. Could have sworn that I tried it before and it wouldn't let me switch to that lens in video mode, so i though it was only for photos, but I was wrong.

The iPhone's ultra wide FOV is too wide for rectilinear. Your review crops out the corners, but if you had actually showed them, people would see how objects get horribly stretched in the corners. Also, when shooting in Linear with the GoPro, why not turn on horizon leveling?

Did you shoot in flat on the GoPro? GoPro color is too much, but even flat is a bit more contrasty than competitors. Sorry to hear you are still having issues with your 9's touch screen - mine has been great, but it was also a later build. The GoPro is more for all those reasons for water activities even though the iPhone advertises that it’s water proof/resistant it does not warranty it that way which I think is amazing and wrong; you can advertise something as water resistant or proof but you won’t stand behind it crazy

Were you shooting in portrait mode with the iphone? If you shoot landscape with the GoPro and then crop it to fit on half a screen, it's not really a fair comparison. Unless you did the same with the iphone.

You didn't include the horizon lock where you can twist the camera 360 degrees and it will stay and night shot it will open the lens for 30 seconds you can take good starlight photography you can do it with a smartphone . lends does not stay open that long so it doesn't come out as clear. if you're jogging with your camera and really bouncing round there's no comparison to how much it will stay in one place but I definitely think the GoPro 9 needs more updating. And one last thing hot weather the GoPro wins phones normally turn off at like 98 go pro can go longer in extreme heat
