In this video, we are taking a closer look at the GoPro Max Lens Mod for the Hero 9 Black. The Max Lens Mod does two things, it offers a wider field of view called MAX SuperView and allows for full 360-degree horizon leveling, no matter what angle your GoPro is at the horizon will always stay level. We do some FOV comparisons with the Hero 9 Black as well as comparison with the GoPro Max. At this time the Max Lens Mod is only available on the GoPro website.

360 °horizon leveling is also possible without a max lens mod. Just change resolution to 1440/60/50p, set it to linear plus horizon leveling and turn on the max lens mod.

Heads Up. You need to put muscle into connecting max lens. Also you will need to do the update on your camera for the Max Lens Mod to show up on the camera.

If you don't have the max-lens attachment, but you've accidentally activated the maxlens video mode and you need to get back to standard lens mode, the instructions on doing that begins at 3. I've noticed that almost every time I'm looking for information, regardless of what it is, it will usually be about three minutes into an instructional video.

Actually, 360° horizon levelling also works with normal lens. Just set Max Lens Mod and turn on Horizon Level.

Is it me or does the clarity and color not look as great on the GP9 when the Max Lens Mod is on? Maybe it was time of day each clipped was filmed?

I totally agree! The Mod darkened the entire scene and dulled out the color brightness. Pause this video at 6:23 then move/click just ahead to 6:25 BIG difference. I'm not buying this Mod.

@@Jeff82556 I ended up buying it and it actually is pretty nice. Like the GoPro in general it needs good light to be at it's best and those clips are kind of cloudy. I use it for mountain biking to get a wider view and level horizon. It's grown on me.

Yes, I thought the same as though to much light was hitting the sensor, it looked a little washed out. I was quite surprised how good the image was on the original Go pro 9

It's the automatic white balance leaning towards different results depending on the field of view in this particular example. Setting the white balance to a specific value would fix it

I set all camera settings to auto, so that color shift you’re seeing is the auto white balance changing

@@Room1sixtyfive The mod itself doesn’t introduce any changes to the color profile. If you strongly object to the default colors then you can always shoot with a flat profile and color correct then yourself. 🙂

I have a Hero 9 on order and will get the Max lens when it becomes available. My primary use is chest or chin-bar mount for mountain biking, plus the usual family stuff, swimming, snowboarding, etc. I know Max mode tops out at 2.7k. I've also seen a few examples of the Max lens in non-Max camera mode, for an exaggerated fisheye view with vignetting. I wonder whether using the H9 in non-Max linear 5k horizon level mode, with the Max lens installed, would create a sort of bootleg horizon leveled 5k Superview with near-gimbal staiblity, with higher resolution and more ProTune options than the Max 2.7k mode. Is this something you can play with in a quick video update? Longtime viewer, keep up the good work.

I wish there was a linear (less FOV) lens mod, but also with bigger lens, so it takes in more light, so it's better in the dark. Just the ability to use the gopro as a regular camera without reductive post-processing.

Ultimately the amount of light hitting the sensor is a function of the aperture, which is not a part of the GoPro lenses. Maybe you could do something like a speedbooster which concentrates the light, but something like that would be super bulky and infeasible for a product this small. You could also increase the sensor size. That would absolutely improve low light performance. But bigger sensors also require bigger lenses.

I just got into GoPro Hero 9 stuff this week. EVERYTHING comes out and drops on the floor from GoPro. The items are ALL on the bottom I figured out after the second box. Ha, ha, ha. They want to show you how it will hold up in drops and falls right away.

I am pretty sure the problem with the audio is the compression being applied to the signal after you begin each new sentence. The first few words clip the channel and the compressor adjusts the input gain by about 60% until the point of your sentence is inaudible. Please try to fix that, or stop using the compressor. Thanks for the info on the MAX.

Sometimes i prefer close up lens instead super wide . I am not an action person i just like to put it on my bike and record a scene and of course take pictures as well . For me as it is is already wide enough and as i said i prefer a close up to get some details with out distortion angles . On a bike you cant carry SLR’s camera and lenses and GoPro 10 is really great . But thanks for sharing your experience and good explanation. God Bless .

The distortion takes GoPro back to 2003. Back then, it was a little annoying, today It's incredibly annoying. I've been thinking of buying a GP10 (instead of a Sony ZV-1) - how ever this ends up, I definitely won't buy the wide lens. And thanks for the great comparison. (Having said all this, KZbin's 1080p HD mode sucks. This has nothing to do with 1080p, with all those artifacts in the picture. Bäh! 🙄)

I really don’t see a whole lot of difference. The still shots are the best comparison. I want to upgrade from my 7black to the 9. I really like the front screen. I noticed the heavy pixelation on your time warps. I have the same problem with my 7 black. Also normal video pixelates. I’ve tried different sharpness settings and no change. The videos look fine when I play the files direct off PC, but KZbin uploads mess it up. Thanks for the video.

Just a quick tip for anyone who wants one, GoPro told me they restock all their accessories every second Sunday Edit: people are throwing shade at this lens but I can think of loads of times who this would be helpful, especially if I have it on a pole mount so I can flip the pole round to get a better shot while keeping the horizon level

Thanks for the video. It seemed that the colors were richer without the Mod lens. What seems to be the best reason to use it? Maybe the horizontal lock and maybe a little wider but it didn't really seem to add a lot. Sorry to be critical but if you have 265k subs, your audio levels should be a little better. When you go outside the volume is way higher.

Can someone confirm?: It appeared the lens mod has less pixel smudging. This would seem logical. We're seeing about the same field of view, but the algorithm is seeing much more. That means it has more information available to it to maintain a steady virtual image. Some quick panning should bear this out. Anyone have experience?

hey, nice vid, you just forgot to lock the white balance when recording your timewarps, the quality was not that good because of that. Otherwise this vid has helped me a lot, i hesitated between buying a gopro 10 with this lens or buying the new dji action 2 which has a 135° FOV without any mods my choice is the gopro, big thanks from France !
