Bluetooth headsets have decent microphones but the Bluetooth standard compresses the audio quality to fit the microphone stream out and the audio stream in. Unfortunate

Basic BT codec (I assume SBC) designed for phone call conversation cannot provide the SQ of a high quality BT codec for music. Ear bud microphones are designed with this in mind and they are small, cheap and designed to capture only mid tone frequencies.

The internal mic on the 11 too is fairly good, esp for GoPro and if you put a foam cover over it - audio used to be a total nightmare with the older ones lol

Taking out the GPS sucks. That is a very helpful feature for general reference of locations for videos and pictures. The people who use overlays and speed tracking on their videos must be REALLY bummed.

yeah, I pre-ordered my 12 black when there was no mention of GPS and I am returning it now for full refund. If GoPro was really oriented towards its customers it would have made a GPS version and a no GPS version to see who wants which. Taking out GPS in 2023 without offering an alternative such as Quik mobile functionality or bluetooth remote with GPS, is a big drawback.

Recently bought an 11 and 11 Mini. Both overheat after five mins on max setting, in moderate temps (I’m in Scotland). GoPro, looks like you’re reading the comments; please solve the overheating issues in future iterations. No point in a high res sensor and great bit rate if it’s unusable

Strange, the only time GP overheated for me when recording inside a car, on a sunny day. Fixed by turning on AC and under-the-windshield blowers so that there was some airflow around camera.

Theres a lot of great tests to show that Gopros really only have overheating issues in studio scenarios. not sure how youre using it, but with any wind at all they usually dont overheat.

I have two GoPro 11's I use for motorcycle filming. I am lucky if I can get 5 minutes before overheating and locking up, in moderate temps around 75 or 80 degrees F. Then I have to remove my mics, take it out of the media case, and remove the battery to reset it. Horrible. However, image quality and stabilization is AMAZING, and why I continue to put up with the issues. Love your reviews, BTW.

Name 1 feature that is on the DJI Action 4 that GoPro does not have either an equivalent to or alternative for. I can provide the answer to the magnetic mounting right now as well, the GP12 brings in the 1/4 20 mount that you can use to adapt to ANY mount system, if you like the magnetic mounting then just adapt it to that. Also GPS does not count because it is not a native feature built into the camera, it is with the remote. Inbuilt support for mics also does not count because GoPro now supports bluetooth mics, not the same but it is just a different answer. The new DJI update just added what? Features that GoPro has had for YEARS... sure they are great to finally have on an Action 4 but are not new to action cameras. GoPro over the past 3 years not only made horizon levelling but has nearly perfected it (oh that statement will age well) and supports bluetooth mics and earbuds now. GoPro are innovating just not at the rate people expect, but DJI are not innovating any more (from what we know at least and keeping the topic purely within the Action camera lineup) then GoPro is. Innovation that is not well received or not what the consumer wants is still innovation. Please though I would love to hear your answer.

@@Jomo-x6n GoPro 8:7 sensor. GoPro are fixing low light in different ways upcoming. A bigger sensor just lets more light in but the Action 4 still doesn't look like it knows how to use the brighter shadows. I personally would rathe work with footage that has little to no detail in the shadows then footage with bad detail in the shadows. You can nitpick all day long about the larger sensor and I won't stop you. However, GoPro are placing their focus elsewhere for the time being and so saying that one focus is objectively better I will not accept. I totally get that people might go to the Action 4 for the larger sensor, and if it was the same price as the action 3 I might as well, but its just not worth it when I don't need the larger sensor anyway. You can call out DJI for having a close to one inch sensor and that makes it better, I can call out GoPro for having a 8:7 aspect ratio. Different tools for different uses.

This action camera and Chris with his OM camera and he is set! Liked the 1/4 20, sad you still need either the media mod or adapter for an external mike, don’t think the ear bud sounded good at all…not really concerned about the GPS feature taken away (likely how the battery time improved). I am confused as to why the only way to get audio monitoring on screen is when using media mod on the 11. Nothing I have seen tells me I can monitor audio on screen if I use a Bluetooth mic on the 12. The blue tooth mic support is exciting but I can not trust using external mics when I have no way to monitor the audio.

@GoPro This is a big disappointment. I use my old GoPro for footage of motorcycle rides and Jeep rides deep in the woods, and the GPS log is important for that. So this is a big downgrade in my opinion. I was really hoping the 12 would be a much bigger upgrade from the 11, with a 1 inch sensor, 4K/120p or better.

The new log format and open gate recording are interesting but I decided to never buy another GoPro again after continual problems with the 7, 9 and, as a last shot, the 10. Randomly turning itself on, overheating, corrupt files etc etc. These issues are well documented by end users but rarely addressed by reviewers. They're just not reliable and the competition is much better these days.

Early tests of the Hero 12 show overheating and most of the other problems to either be fully or mostly fixed. Hero 11 was fine as well for most of it so long as you knew its limits, peoples expectations are just outside the current limits of the available technology.

@@strongereveryday2302 What's the issue for you. One camera line did not run into problems (in final product release) and one camera line did. The first camera line did not have a problem to fix so of course could not fix it, the other line fixed or at least greatly improved upon the problem that only exists in some use cases. I have no clue why the issues existed for GoPro and not DJI. However, from what I have seen online at least, the Action 4 still does not produce 'good' low light footage and in most cases that I have seen online I would rather have to work with the GoPro footage over the DJI footage. (I am using the DC Rainmaker OA4 v GP11 low light test as a reference) GoPro has now addressed the bulk of the overheating problem, reliability issues, and boosted battery life. At this point is comes down more to how you use the camera for if it runs into an issue or not. Do you really need to record 4k 120fps for LONGER then 20 Minutes in one take? Or 5.3k 60fps for Longer then an hour in one take?

@@followtheboat I agree. I know that people have run into problems and I don’t mean to discount or ignore that. All I mean to say is that I struggle to find reason to complain about issues on past models that appear to be fixed. If they develop then they develop, but I find it poor logic to state that they ‘happen’ instead of noting it as a ‘could happen’. Also, any of the tests I have seen only show that it has limitations not problems. As I have no intention to push the limits then I don’t see that as a problem for me. I know I might very well end up biting my words here but I just see so many people pointing out issues with the 7/8/9/10 and automatically passing them onto the 12. To me if the problem does exist in the past but (at least to my current knowledge) is fixed then I see that more as a thing to keep in mind then a problem. I know that a lot of people have greif with GoPro but I don’t and from what my research indicates I dont have reason to make the greif my own, at the very least not yet.

I’ve had a GoPro Hero 3 black for about 10 years, and this is the first time since then I’ve been really inclined/compelled to upgrade. It’s always felt like slightly gimmicky upgrades that never really cut it for me. Now having 10 bit 4K+ resolution with a true log profile and timecode, it’s something that can truly fit into a professional pipeline and still have the convenience of a consumer product

So here is why you might NEVER buy one of these: Last spring I had the Hero 11 OVERHEAT. It was 82 degrees (28c) and full sun in April in Las Vegas. The camera overheated, was unable to be used. That is NOT a camera that you should buy. Unless you are in Southern Alberta. I grew up there. It is under 25c like 95% of the year there.

Also this is the Hero 12 we are talking about. Not the Hero 11, and already there is a proven difference when it comes to overheating, if the ideal situations GoPro states for the camera don't apply then you still get 20+ minutes of 5.3k 60fps footage. A- do you really need static 5.3 footage for longer than 20 min per take, and do you really need 60 fps for all of those 20 min? B- if your answer to question a is yes then sorry but the GoPro is your only option for a 5.3k action camera.

Doesn't seem much have changed since 10 version and that was such a problem for me. Overheating, battery swelling, kept hanging, wonky touchscreen, wonky battery door, proprietary format (for example highlights cant be imported in Pr), weird menus, can't rename settings and so on. Also it is way bigger now since the earlier versions. Primary bought it for slowmo but the slowmo is bad quality. Built in pins are a good thing tho, but they are not very stable. The stabilization is very good but has quirks, can't pan very good for example it gets confused.

The best reason I can think of to explain their reluctance to integrate a ¼ inch x 20 before, I theorise, is that when introduced, the unit and its unique mount were both produced almost exclusively by GoPro. At that time, supplemental mounts and add-ons were a lucrative part of the company's structure. But the very fact that it became a "de-fact" standard meant that an increasing number of 3rd party vendors were disrupting that particular revenue stream. If I recall rightly, their sales have been lagging relative to previous glory days, so cost cutting on a diminishing portion of an overall diminishing T.A.M. makes sense. Keeping the "wings" is obligatory so legacy users don't feel abandoned, but the indicator to watch for will be a decline in accessory production and sales, if such data is available.

The GoPro is definitely useful for a lot more than just action, but for general family fun, fishing, etc, the Olympus Tough TG6 or the new TG7 is a better choice because of zoom lens, faster aperture, amazing macro abilities, built-in flash, etc I love my GoPro, but I don't try to make it do everything.

Same sensor AND same processor. GPS removed (or maybe just disabled) to ever so slightly improve battery life. Overheating still an issue. Firmware updated to give the illusion that it isn't a GoPro11. I can speak freely because I did not get a FREE GoPro 12.

Probably the Ilyushin IL2. Excellent low flight characteristics. Tons of armoured protection against walk and wade fisherman firing anti aircraft guns at you, to keep you away from their favorite spots. 6:03 of course you cannot monitor audio from the microphone through the same pair of BT headphones. The latency will be so delayed that the slow echo of you own voice will drive you nuts defeating the purpose of monitoring.

I just came from the 7 and 8. I can't wait to see how if there is going to be any difference in the video quality. They all ways seem like its 720p at best when im out filming.

GoPro Hero 13 is next? Well, I guess we'll see if they're superstitious and skip to number 14. And if they don't, I guess we'll see how many of their customers are superstitious and skip the 13.

Whilst not a bad update, I tend to feel that GoPro have contracted the same disease as Apple with their iPhones, although GoPro seem to have it far lighter. Yearly model updates containing a lot of gimmicks, but not much else. Yet, the usual claims of 'the best ever' said in a flowery, exaggerated long-winded presentations (Apple I mean), which if you think about it, should be the case if they strive to continuously improve their products and therefore a given and need not be said at all. At least GoPro largely limit their releases to a video on social media.

Does the HDR for video work well with the GoPro 12? I’m enjoying the DJI 4 I recently picked up, but but it often blows out highlights in high contrast light.

Funny thing is, on current Sony Xperia phones when you use the VideoPro or CinemaPro apps you can monitor sound levels and adjust (in app) with Bluetooth headphones. There's a bit of delay but you can hear what you're recording which is helpful. Odd they haven't implemented in their cameras

Until I see a fatter sensor I really don't care about these updates. Is a DJI Action 1/GoPro Hero 9 much worse? Not remotely.

It feels weird to review the GoPro Hero 12 without mentioning the elephant in the room - the DJI Osmo Action 4 - it's biggest competitor.

That's the Redington Rise 5/6 which I consider one of the best affordable reels ever made. Also it was the only one I could get access to that had a subtle olive tone to match the Winston Alpha+ 6 reel seat.
