I have the new hero4 black and am loving it. Have not tried the external battery yet so cant talk about any heat problems, I always buy new memory cards for my cameras so my hero is using a sandisk ultra and it works great. The new nightshot mode is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Support for the Sandisk Ultra was dropped a couple of years ago. You need either a Sandisk Extreme or Lexar 633x. How did you get on with GoPro RE the battery issue?

hello. my experience has been very different than yours - i have used their new battery bacpac for hours and hours, with the H4 silver and black - no overheat issues. and, my cams fit fine and dandy into the frame. not sure what' up with that!?! glad to hear gopro swapped it out for you.

I have had the Hero 4 since Oct 7. I purchased the Lexar 633x 64GB SD Card. I used the camera once. I can't get the SD Card error to go away. I went through the delete all process, and it appeared to work; however, when I try to record video, it keeps coming back with the same SD card error. The camera also runs very, very hot. I couldn't touch the SD when I pulled it out of the camera.

I got my Hero 4 Black the week it was released and am more than happy with it. Image quality is better than the Hero 3+ Black that I formerly owned and no sign of the focus issues that the 3+ Black had. I have used my Hero 4 with both Sandisk and Lexar micro SD cards with no probem. I almost always shoot with the LCD BacPac attached to use as a viewfinder. The camera does get a bit warm, but no more than the 3+ did. Batteries for the Hero 4 made by Wasabi seem to last longer than the stock GoPro battery. The one glitch (?) I have noticed is that when using the LCD BacPac as a viewfinder, the screen dims quite a bit after exactly one minute of shooting. Video is unaffected. May be some power saving mode not listed in the setup menu.

I picked up my hero4 black the morning of release and I contacted gopro later that day due to overheating issues. I simply wanted to know what kind of battery life I'd get in 4k at 30fps with the factory battery, since I make diving videos and I don't have the luxury of changing the battery in the water. About 30 minutes in, the camera shuts down. It is extremely hot, and it is not inside any housing or have a bacpac to restrict heat loss. I've since witnessed the screen upon shutdown, and the lcd glitches a bit and shows "too hot shutting down" with a thermometer picture. I run a sandisk extreme plus 64gb card so write speed is not an issue. I have seen another video though that pointed to the sandisk ultra as having heat issues when compared to other cards so maybe it's the card and not the camera. I will have to get a new card before I can test this. Anyway I'm still waiting for another answer from gopro about the issue as they've had me update the firmware which seemed to help some, but still wound up shutting down. So far I've not found anyone else with this issue.

I've got the Battery bacpac and use it with my HERO2 and HERO 3+ Black with ZERO problems. The camera DO generate a little heat with use but I have NEVER had the problem that you've had. I am interested to hear what GoPro has to say about it........

aLph4_g4mer_ I think you need a very fast SD Card. Also make sure the firmware is updated to the latest.

Your SD card needs to have a write speed of at least 95mb/s for 4K - for SanDisk you'll need the extreme pro version. I just got the Lexar microSDXC 633x for $50 on Amazon. There was a big issue with SanDisk cards with the previous GoPros due to performance issues. GoPro actually remove them from their site for a while until they came out with a fix (less bitrate w/sandisk was the fix). Google it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

MrCheesyCam There's a chart on go pro website who idicates you wich writing speed you need for 4k , 1080p , etc.... and followig go pro instructions for 4k at 30 fps 60Mb/s is all that you need ;)

also the hero 4 black didn't have very good instructions on how to operate the camera I called the help line and actually got someone who really could not help she told me to go onto KZbin if I wanted to get a better working knowledge of this camera? i'm looking for a microsd card for the GoPro 4 black that can handle te 4k resolution. Concluding from comments the lexar 633x has only 45mb/s write speed, and is not enough for 4k. The Sandisk extreme plus got 50mb's write speed, i think will also get problems. The sandisk extreme pro cards with 90mb/s (32gb/64gb) will be available end of this month. I think i'll have to wait for those cards.. What do you guys think of this?

Hello CheesyCam. I got my Hero 4 Black this weekend, I already had a Hero 2 (with the old BacPac). Now, the BacPac attaches to the hero 4, but I don't have the BacPac Backdoor for the Hero 4, do you think (or can you look?) the old BacPac will fit into the new BacPac Backdoor housing? Thanks in advance! P.s. I don't think the battery of the old Hero 2 that's in the Battery BacPac will give me any problems, as it's 1100mAh, 3.7V and 4,07Wh and the new one is 1160mAh, 3.8V and 4.4Wh.

I bought 2 Hero 4 Blacks and 2 of the same frames and the frames work fine on my Gorpros. I do sometimes depress the record button while putting my cameras in their frames but after is they are in the frame the work fine. No issues. As far as the battery bacpac i think perhaps i will wait before i get one. yours is not the only video that has shown the heat issues.

I have had a similar problem with the over heating also it appears that the camera starts arbitrarily with out or very minor contact. Again the unit the overheating was very intense in that I had to have it cool off after I was finally able to shut it down.

Why don't GoPro just include the SD card with the unit instead of telling people confusing list to purchase from? Why can't they just make it so you do have so much learning curve on that little tiny screen? Wifi problems and quality issues with purplish/greenish tints.

Hi, I had the same SD card error problem , especially in the night time lapse mode until I got back to the 2.0 firmware. Now is everything ok. (GoPro Hero 4 Black + San Disk Extreme Plus 16 GB)

Have you measured the temperature? Take cheap IR sensor and measure it. If it's up to 80°C it should be OK.

The same old bloody problems! I had this issue with my Hero3 Black and it over heated a lot... GoPro could not give me any advice on how to have it sorted out and the company I bought it from said that they cant help me either.. A pain in the ass! Will I get the new Hero4? NO!

Counterfeit SD cards are becoming a big big problem. The gopro requires very high speed cards in order to maintain the high bitrate that the cameras generate giving us the wonderfully sharp video quality. The market is unfortunateley flooded with cheap knock - off cards from China that simply don't get anywhere near the needed speeds. I suspect many of the SD card issues being experienced are as a result of this. Only buy branded cards from reputable retailers. If buying on amazon make sure it is amazon providing the cards as many ship via a 3rd party resellers never biy from ebay. Test the speed of your received cards using software recommended by the manufacturers. If they fail the tests report the retailer to the manufacturer.

Dude that sandisk card is not fast enough for 4K 30fps, and to let you know my battery bacpac does not get hot so wondering if there is foreign material in the camera or bent terminals causing a short maybe?

Some heat is normal. These cameras are pretty durable, they are sports cameras. I just have one unique issue (also see my test #3 video), and I am working with GoPro to see what is going on. I have seen another video showing the same case, so maybe it's just mine that is getting too hot.

Unfortunately since the GoPro went public, they have entered the "satisfy the shareholder" game, where the profits are the priority and the cost optimization is a must, even for a company with high revenues like GoPro... It is sad, but there is no doubt about decreasing quality and customer satisfaction in the future because you know, they have to report 10Ks and 10Qs now, and investors don't want to see extra buck spent on the unnecessary things like lens covers, or extra accessories in the box... your SD Card runs 30mb/s. 4K requires 60mb/s, and also if you look on gopro's website where it suggests cards you won't find this one. I had to upgrade as well, i'm using the Lexar 64gb 633x 95mb/s.

MrCheesyCam you'll need to buy the other micro sd card with 45 Mb/s (the gold one) ..just look it up on the gopro website they even say that ! :) the writing speed of the grey one is just not enough...and if you ask me: that's not strange at all because 4k is incredible and 4 times the resolution of 1080p so...yeah

Ariders LifeUncut I can't vouch for the accuracy of my heat gun, but I got a reading of 156 F after about 8 minutes left on. They say the skin feels pain at 120 F and can suffer burns at 130-140 F. This unit definitely feels hot. The unit did not power off on it's own, but I was afraid to run it longer so I turned it off. GoPro support has asked me to send back the unit for them to inspect.

MrCheesyCam just for the sake of evidence (and my morbid sense of humor) I would have left it turned on until the battery pack exploded... standing at a safe distance that is. I think once the folks at GoPro see the footage you would get a Very fast replacement and an answer to Why it's doing that. I'm sure yours is not the only one that's overheating.

When it says error go to the settings then go to delete files, there you can choose to format the sd-card. It worked for me

SanDisk Ultra is not high quality card. It's not on the recommended list. You should use SanDisk's Extreme or Extreme plus ones... either 32GB or 64GB

Mine is also Genuine. The funny part is the frame DID NOT WORK with one HERO4, but it worked with the replacement HERO4. Both brand new cameras, but apparently some deviation to each one during manufacturing. Something weird there.

I have to agree, GoPro battery is SHIT! I Bought a GoPro session and the battery will not charge, then I switched to GoPro hero 4 silver and a GoPro dual charger and it will not charge as well Used many different wall adapters and still will not hold a charge on both battery. Called GoPro and spoke to miss Jessie and she told me to update the camera, what!?!? I want to charge the battery using the dual charger not update the camera. My first experience with GoPro suck and now I have to return this one yet again. BTW I asked them with all that money they are making why not include a wall plug adapter, they told to buy a GoPro wall adapter...really.😄 GoPro Chinese battery suck big time, be safe...

Gopro heat is a big problem and they (the gopro Company) for some reason are ignoring Customers or maybe they can't fix it. it's not only the GP4, they have this problem since GP3 & GP3+. when you People at GoPro try an do something about it .
