GoPro HERO9 Max Lens Mod Installation Fix

Same issue with my lens mod. I used a small small drop of liberty oil. Did the trick. I’m not taking a wrench to expensive electronics. It’s a camera, not a Diesel engine. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.

I had trouble fitting the Max Lens Mod as it would only go 95% of the way, so after watching videos on you tube and it looked so easy to fit I thought I had a dodgy one. Luckily for me I'm not the only one with this issue, this video helped me out so a massive thanks to you. Must point out that I put a little bit on like on the video but it didn't work, tried a little bit more and worked.

Thanks for the tip - really worked for me. Not sure why GoPro don't put this advice on their site or with the product guide. It must be a common problem that they are aware of.

Thank you so much! I had just ordered a whole hero 9 bundle and the max lens mod and after dealing with customer service and getting no where I had boxed it all up and was about to send it all back to them and get a refund this worked great!

Thanks for the note. Glad it worked for you! I was equally frustrated with my kit when I got it. Now that you can get it on, you’ll probably find it’s a pretty amazing lens in what it can do.

This helped a bit to make the turning action smoother, which made it very apparent that there's a step-up on the latch of the Max Lens Mod attachment flange when you're approximately 75° into the turn. In order to finish the turn you have to push the lens in toward the body of the camera with a fair amount of pressure and finish turning. Unfortunately, after doing this the mounting bracket on the camera seems to move away from the body of the camera, resulting in the installed-by-default camera attachment (really just a protective cover) to sit approx 0.25-0.5mm away from the body. I'm not sure if this affects the weather resistance, but it would certainly allow dust to enter the lens cavity, so be careful.

Thanks, Corey. That’s a good note to pay attention. I have used the stock lens since and have not had issues, but I have noticed I have to be careful putting the stock lens back on as it’ll sometimes cant itself on an angle. Other people have noted fine metal shavings after initial Max Lens install. So it clearly grinds something away, which then makes it easy on subsequent installs.

I've just tried it. Initially, I was concerned about putting too much of the oil. So, the first attempt didn't work. Decided to give it a second chance and put the slightest bit more oil, including rubbing the oil-soaked tissue on the top plate of those two wings. And it worked! Your video's a life saver.

What's a good video with a great tip for turning the max lens which wasn't easy to turn from me either. I think I missed if you mentioned you have to slightly pull out on the regular lens cover before it will turn it was a good video

My gopro horizon leveling works fine, but it doesnt record horizon leveling...

the only way that works for me is the grease! thanks a bunch. I try all the other recommendation with kitchen towel and max lens cover technic - it never worked!

Solution: use ear sticks with a little bicycle chain oil in two places - the max lens hooks. I spend 1 minute with this fix to mount max lens.

Absolutely appalling quality control. Makes me suspect all official GoPro add ons to be honest. Now I full-on do not trust their floating handle. I’m confident damage was done to the lens mount on my hero9 by trying to Brute Force this Max lens mod on. Shame on you GoPro.

@Eric the upside is that the lens IS AWESOME!! I’ll post some videos on it, but I’m absolutely amazed how well it works. I put it on kite lines, loop the kite in the ocean while riding a wave and the footage is rock steady. You can’t even see a horizon in most of the footage so I don’t know how it does it. It’s well worth getting through the install glitch if you would benefit from then lens.
