I totally agree with what you said. The GoPro Max 360 came in very intimidating. I just afraid I won’t know how to use it. I won’t know how to edit and I’m scared to buy it. I’ve built a lot of skills using the regular GoPro and I’m a lot more comfortable with them. When I think about it though it does it make sense to spend all the money that it would take to buy a hero 9 plus the max lens mod when I could just buy the go pro max 360... Try Hard. Take Chances... love it

thought the same, now that i own one. .. not that much. if they urprade gopro firmware for more options in the future then maybe it´s worth it. you can´t night photo mode with it, no burst photo. very limited options, bought it at 70€ with subscrition in gopro web site. not worth the 70€, much less 100€.

Fun Max Lens mod hack: if you want to film vertical but don’t have a vertical mount, just put the orientation lock on while vertical and then mount it horizontal. It will film vertical while laying horizontally. Works the other way round too 👍

The hero 8's media mod was less than impressive and we are hopefully for the hero 9 to be our next camera. The tests we would like to see is. 1. how are the onboard mics on the media mod 2. can you enable both front and back mics on the media mod at the same time? I might be talking from behind the camera and would like to hear the person in front of it as well 3. test external mics and how to mount them. possibly get the very small (but good) EDUTIGE ETM-001 Microphone and figure out how to mount it and let us know how it sounds. You can test other larger mics as well but this one has been so good to us thanks Dave you rock! glad to see you do so well on youtube over the last year! ps your wife is still hawt!

After much testing; the Max lens mod on the HERO 9 is amazing!!! However, the video quality from the 5k (without MAX lens) is leaps and bounds better than the 2.7k from the MAX lens mod. With the image censor just being upgraded to 20 MP, I dont forese this getting much better until GoPro releases the next image sensor with even more megapixels...

Nice, informative review David. I've been using the Max on my motorbike YT channel for a year now, mixed results. The Windows Desktop app was finally issued only a few weeks ago, but is faulty and doesn't export video. Consequently, you have to use the Max exporter app which limits resolution to 4K (not 5.6K). When rendering this in mt PowerDirector 18 I get a fair degree of fish-eye distortion.

While you were using the lens is there a setting that allows a little bit of variation on the horizon during rotation so say for mountain biking POV so you still feel the trail

at 8:20 ish when you said "when the reframed footage looks as good..." that right there is why I sold my 360 camera and went back to the standard gopro models. And yes.. WHEN the reframed footage of a 360 camera looks as good as current standard action cameras, i will transition back to the 360.

I chamged my hero 8 with max and im so happy. 360orld is just different and better. And if u upload stuff to Instagram, than the quality doesnt matters. And the creativity u get with Max is in another level, i suggest everyone to try.

Thanks for the video! The GoPro MAX in Hero mode also does the horizon leveling and horizon lock. I can spin mine all the way around and it is steady as can be.

Lens not necessary. There is in camera Max Mode with same results, lens is wider angle only.

The hero 9 is playing catch up! I love my Max, best of all worlds, plus if uploading to KZbin hard to tell the difference if you use the high bit rate on the Max. I just wish the Max had an option for an external mic, guess it would have to be a Bluetooth mic to stop the cable appearing in the footage. There is a video out where a GoPro 7 in 4K mode is compared with a Max in hero mode (1080p), the results are amazing!

I have the gopro 9 + Max Lens Mod as well as the gopro max , I would lean towards using my Gopro Max, as you've stated previously gopro have never improve the bugs within the Hero eco-system of cameras, for that reason the MAX is certainly more reliable.

The two things I dislike about the max lens mod is the 4:3 ratio recording and the fish eye view. You really have to crop it close to avoid the bending around the image. Otherwise it’s a great mini camera

Hero Mode on the Max (just the front camera) shoots in 1920 x 1440 which is in between 1080 and 2K ~ 1.5K I’m sure the next Max it will be 2.7K or maybe even 4K 1920 x 1440 actually looks better than 1080, you can tell the difference. And when moving doesn’t really look way worse than 4K. when doing a still shot you can see the difference.

The issue I have with the max lens and the 360 is I use my GoPro Hero 9 for scuba diving and can't use the protective case with a max lens.

Yep, just a normal glass lens, so they'll do nothing as far as ND or UV filtering. And because it's a fairly fish eye lens, you won't be able to add ND filters either😬

Did you know you can still use the rotation horizon leveling feature without the max lens? I turn on the max lens feature without the max lens and turn on horizon leveling and I’m able to rotate my GoPro hero 9 completely around and my horizon stays level the whole time. I just don’t have the super view. I don’t need super view for my action sports.

Hello David, do u have the same problem as i with the touch screen on the back when the gopro is mounted? When the cam is mounted and i touch the screen there is no response. If i touch the camera housing with one finger then the screen works fine 🤷🏻‍♂️ dont know what kind of grounding issue this is 🤷🏻‍♂️ Do u have an idea? Or somebody else here in the comments? You probably already made a decision, but the Max is a bit of a pain in the butt to edit compared to the regular gopros. The quality also isn't nearly as good, since it's 5k shared between the two sensors. Also, reliability is a concern given the two sensors/pair of lenses as it leaves more doors open for accidents.
