Us Americans call it soccer because back in the olden days they called "football" association football, as simply calling it football caused confusion between rugby football (now just rugby) and "football." America derived the term soccer from "asSOCiation," thus we call it soccer and you guys (as in almost everyone else in the world) call it "football." No need to hate.
