I believe CBP agents in the US and CBSA agents in Canada are armed. I'm sure the officers who do this work are trained in assessing the risks of who and what is up there and act accordingly.

TBH, no different than any other border crossing. And there are both Canadian and US workers up there. I think there would be an optics issue if they didn't do this: there would be complaints of special treatment compared to the rest of us who do need to show our passports.
