Totally agree what other football fans did no understand but watching Utd from 72/73 to around 1977 was the best craic you could of had and not forgetting taking 10 to 15,000 fans to away fixtures and in some cases being 80/90% of the ground attendance.

A great insight into Tommy Docherty by a United legend Gordon Hill. I refereed Gordon at Old Trafford and also in America when he played for Chicago Sting. Great that he mentioned Tommy Cavanagh who is often overlooked in this fantastic interview by John Gubba. Despite Gordon's career, he will always be remembered for his time with United. Gordon with his electric pace would open up ant defence. Whilst refereeing Chicago Sting v New York Cosmos he ran alongside me and said "Ref can you get the German players to pass the ball to me" I smiled and loved Gordon's sense of humour. A true winger and I hope that you will listen in to great insight into our wonderful game. Well done Gordon

In 1995, I remember I saw you and the Doc on a plane from Dublin to Manchester. I spoke to you to say you were my teenage hero and the Doc butted in saying 'I brought him to Old Trafford'. I said that I knew. Then the Doc remembered that he'd left his duty frees on the plane.

Great winger, Gordon Hill. Such a shame he spent only two seasons at Old Trafford. I'm sure Pearson followed suit a year or two later, along with Jimmy Greenhoff. The break-up of a very good side that surely would have won more under The Doc.

All the players in that side, and I know most of them, felt they were destined to win more trophies with The Doc. And when we got rid of Gordon I believe that was such a big mistake. JG

@@ManUtdTheReligion Indeed. That was Sexton, though, wasn't it? And - correct me if I'm wrong - I seem to remember Stuart Person leaving the club after some acrimony, about 1979, saying "I will never play for this club again". I've searched everywhere on the net for a clue about this, but can't find it anywhere. Maybe my memory's failing me, after all it was over 40 years ago...
@steveblack6102 жыл бұрын
@@SMSJSC Don’t know about the acrimony part but Pearson as I recall struggled with injuries at that time and we had Joe Jordan by then. No big squad and rotation etc like now so out he went. He’d been great for Utd but things move on and he then got another cup medal at West Ham so not too bad eh.

Sexton comes in & shows a lot of them the doors, that side was top dollar & then shunted to a struggling Derby & career stalled & fading so quick. Football can crush you. Badly & it was cruel when that side didn't need changing.

@@seltaeb9691 Was it that Dave Sexton's approach was too cautious, as opposed to the more attacking approach of the Doc? I wasn't old enough at the time to analyse it but something changed.

Had the priveledge to play with Sammy Mcilroy as a trialist with Maclessfield, and later with his son Sammy Jr at Flixton. I'm a staunch born and bred liverpool fan. I've come across some absolute grade A arseholes ex pro's who i've played with and against. And by far and away Sammy Mcilroy is the nicest and most honest i've ever met in football, and somebody who i'd bend over backwards to help, and his son Sammy Jr is exactly the same. An absolute credit to the family name and achievements.

@@ManUtdTheReligion I played up front in my game with John Askey. At halftime Sammy said to me what are you doing playing up front? (I thought I'll just get changed now and bugger off home lol) He said no come and play centre mid with me for the second half. It took him about twenty minutes for him to talk me through getting used to it. At the end of the he said "there you go, that's your best position". I discovered two things that day. One, I couldn't pass a ball 10 yards, but I could drop one one you're toe from 40 yards. Strange. Lol.
