He is perfect. He wrote, played guitar and sang each song. Gordon and band in concert played exactly as they sound on the recordings. He’s a perfectionist and is perfect. Long time fan, wonderful memories.

For that very reason, Gordon self-produced his own recordings. He was frustrated because he knew they could sound better if produced by others but it was more important to him that the music sound the same in the recordings as it would when people heard the music live when they came to see him and his band play. Also why he had the same band members on his recordings and in live appearances.

Rest in Peace and Love forever Gordon Lightfoot! Thanks for all the fabulous music and lyrics you painted of our Canadian landscape, history and your personal life stories and observations of people and life. You are an inspiration and legend to us all here in Canada. Bless your Heart and Soul for being our National Troubadour telling our history and using words like the Group of 7 used paint. So proud you never forgot your roots and didn't run off to live is California or New York. So proud of you and yes I broke into tears when on May 1st 2023, my oldest son told me of Gordons passing. An era is over, but the legend and music will live on forever, as any well written prose does. God speed Brother. The Band is waiting.. Ian Tyson, David Crosby, Harry Bellefonte have recently passed too... Perhaps? Who knows maybe you will journey on together from here making heavenly music until you return. I'd like to think so.🙏🏻 Thank you for all the wisdom you imparted on this impressionable young girl from Alberta. I truly knew nothing about the real world of love, lies, longing looks, loneliness, drugs, alcohol, gambling or being cheated on. But the deep feelings I felt as I listened and learned from this wise man wordsmith music. With these songs that as a child, touched my heart and ignited a fire I had no idea I had or what it was about! The depth his lyrics reached inside, I only understood the feeling of when I finally grew up. To know of the hard intensity lessons of a real romantic relationship, that Gordons songs were really teaching us about. Thanks again for your being a big part my soundtrack for of 5 decades now. ❤🇨🇦🎼🎸🎶⚘🙏🏻💃🏻

One of the best things that ever happened to me in my career as a stage manager and sound engineer was meeting Gordon at the Berkeley Community Theater in California. I was doing sound and lights for a show prior to his and I was asked if I could do a lighting design for his show at the theater and help out with the sound mixing. I was very flattered and jumped at the chance. It was a wonderful evening sitting behind soundboard and a free hand in choosing the gels for the lights and using a device called a Sweet 16 (16 lighting presets) I was able to sit soundboard and do the lights at the same time while talking to the spotlight operator with headphones. After the show was over I was asked to do seven additional shows with him at other venues in California, which I was delighted to do. For six years I had a gig when he came west. Gordon was very easy going and as genuine as the music he played. As long as the monitor mix on stage was balanced, he was a happy guy and was complementary about the lighting design. Several years later I worked with his first lead guitar player, David Rea, recording and producing two albums. Every time Gord was coming to California we made a special effort to meet him backstage and he was always happy to see us and also very kind. I was in Nova Scotia mixing sound for the Lundenberg Harbour Festival and several others. After that I was leaving to go back to California and I knew that I was never going to be returning to Nova Scotia again. I ran into Gordon, who was doing the show there, and he and I were talking about me never seeing Nova Scotia because I was getting too old and too disabled to be on the road much longer. He took out his guitar and played me “Farewell Nova Scotia”, which was one of the highlights me knowing him.

Thank you for sharing all that insight with the rest of us!!! How very exciting. That would have been the highpoint of my life...meeting and working with/for him!!! He sounds as wonderful as I have always dreamed him to be.... Even if we are all growing old, I wouldn't trade my years of living for any others. We had the most wonderful music, overall, and we had Gordon Lightfoot, in particular. My husband and I went to so many concerts, I can't list them, but we drove to wherever, if he didn't come to our City. I really appreciate every word you posted! Cheri B.

It's got to be where I just love everything he does. I've listened to his BBC performance dozens of times. The sound quality is great. It's old (from 71 I believe) because it's before alot of his big hits but I love every song he does. That BBC concert is done with just a bass and another guitar. It's all he needed. It's sad nowadays because he's lost that bass voice. But I would still go to his concerts if they came nearby Washington st.

I saw Gord in 1998 in Concord, CA. Front row, center seats, my wife and 2yo daughter in tow. Right when he started singing Don Quixote my daughter holds up her two Power Puff dolls and loudly says “Dipsy’s mad at Lala!” Gord looked at us, I apologized and we quickly got up and moved to the grass area way in the back. After the song, Gordon laughed and said he hoped he didn’t scare us off. We waved from the grass area and the spotlight found us. He said thank you and asked which doll won.

Gordon Lightfoot is the reason that I learned to play guitar in 1975. I wanted to learn to play like him. I only took lessons for one year and then just kind of became "self-taught", but I remember that my guitar teacher was all about learning chords and scales and reading music and music theory and I, on the other hand, didn't care about most of that. What I cared about was Gordon Lightfoot songs. Typical lesson was: Teacher: "Today we are going to learn about and practice the Pentatonic Scale." Me: "hey, I brought in my cassette tape recorder, let's listen to this song here, Carefree Highway, and then I want you to teach me how to play that guitar intro." And so it went...

Gordon Lightfoot was a schooled and educated Music School graduate. He didn't scribble lyrics and chord changes on paper napkins - he wrote his songs on manuscript paper - and also wrote the string arrangements - except for a few written by Randy Newman. He was not a "by ear" player.

His music always gratifies my ears and heart and never, ever grow weary of his music and lyrics. Red Shea added a whole new dimension to his music when they played together. Red's undermelodies(?) added so much to the song and you could see it on Gord's face as seen on the 1972 BBC concert. God Bless him and his compadres that have given us so much in pleasure and heart rending enjoyment as all great musicians do (.......notice that I said 'Musicians', not the cannon fodder you hear today). Ageless.......

I had the great pleasure of seeing Gordon in concert at the Spokane Opera House in 1979 and like other commenters have noted, he and his band sounded just like his albums. His music is timeless and I’ve enjoyed it so much over the decades. I love listening to his “shuffled” songs on my Bluetooth headphones while I do yardwork. Before I know it, I’ve listened to several albums-worth and my project is done. You just can’t be unhappy after listening to his music. I’m so glad his music will live on!

Yes, indeed, he is a perfectionist! He played at Melody Fair one year and he would only allow half of the seats to be sold, that is how fussy he is about his venues, as well! There is no music that brings me more peace than Gordon's.

The one and only time I saw Gordon perform live was in Dublin, Ireland in 1974. I was amazed how he and his guitarist and bass player were able to reproduce live exactly the sound of his records. It was a wonderful and magical show.

Gordon Lightfoot is a once in a lifetime talent to both hear and experience. I have been lucky enough to see and hear him perform on a number of occasions. The best was back in early 1970 in Boston. Somehow, we bumped into each other that evening in a tiny pub near Harvard Square! We drank whiskey and sang songs (even though i am terrible), and closed that pub (apropos) 'In the Early Morning Rain' ....

An awesome performance and performer. It was very sad to see Terry Clements here, knowing that he is gone now. I saw them 1 year after this performance in Reno and it was this exact lineup, Gordon, Pew Wee Charles, Rick Haynes, Barry Keane and Terry Clements. I have been to numerous Lightfoot shows, and this era was my favorite.
