Imagine the historical significance of this concert footage. Gordon at his peak. Introducing the BBC audience to his dear friend "you may have heard of from Nashville, Kris Kristofferson". The Canadian Railroad Trilogy marks him as one of Canadas greatest poets and historians. Love always to Gordon. Even my 30 year old girfriend in New Orleans regards him as the finest.

Thank you so much for posting this concert. I haven't been so moved since the late sixties and early 70's when I would see them all live. As a young musicians my friends and I were mesmerized by the sound of this fantastic trio. John and then Rick on bass and especially Red's guitar work that blended so well with the Lightfoot strumming and picking simply amazed us. And that voice! That pure resonating tone that Gord had back then. How I wish it hadn't faded so over the years. Thanks again!!!

oh, how long ago. Look at 'Richard' (the ol' strawboss, Rick Haynes) and the now late Red Shea. And Gord, with his sherry coloured eyes and impatient stage manners. There are songs here I never heard live and haven't heard in years. This, then, is why we know he is simply the best. And his was the first version of Me and Bobby McGee, and still the best I think.

A few days after the Grey Cup last year, my mom borrowed Lightfoot's new live CD from the library; one listen and I was hooked! My mom's favourite is Early Morning Rain, it came out when she was in grade 9. She used to sing his songs during her summer job as a strawberry picker during high school. I was so disappointed when I wasn't able to see him at the Harvest Picnic last week, but knowing he was nearby made me love him even more.

@elltoft This may not mean much but I wanted you to know that I met your father at the Fairleigh Dickinson University concert I believe in 72 or 74 & he couldn't have been a nicer guy even taking the time to show my friend some chords & a few tricks & he was appreciated along with Terry. As your dad was talking to us Gordon walked by & said "be good to him, without him I wouldn't be here" He left a proud heritage and no man could ask for more.

Beautiful video of Gord at his best with two incredible musicians. Saw him with Red and John Stockfish (on bass) at Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre in 1969-70. We all listened to Gord but - as guitar players - spent most of the concert watching Red play his tasteful, melodic and fluid licks on his Martin D-28. Saw Gord again in Vancouver and Ottawa but that first concert was unforgettable! This BBC video brought me back to the first time ever I saw his face!

On Quora the other day someone posted the question: Since life will eventually end, is there really any point to doing much in living? My answer: Treat yourself to a few of our, "Wandering Minstrels of the Dawn", our musical poets, like Gordon, Jackson, Denver, Croce, Chapin, Cat Stevens, Joan, Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and so many others that make you smile, that reach into and proclaim that which is in your own mind, that you can't quite express as well as they do, and make life truly worth living, even if you don't accomplish much. I know my own life has been enriched so much by the words and music of this especially talented group of us.

@elltoft I happened to see your post today and I thought you might like to know that Red was my guitar hero! His guitar work with GL was perfect - so delicate and musical. I bought a Martin guitar because that is what he played. I enjoyed Terry's work, but nobody could match your dad. I got to see him play with Gordon, one time at Providence College, around 1971, It was just after "If Your Could read My Mind" came out. Hope you know that Gordon's fans know Red's contribution to the music.

@elltoft Hi, my name is Rob. If your father is Red Shea I have nothing to say but THANKYOU. Red Shea is a great guitarist and someone that Gord always talked about fondly. As for Terry Clements, same thing. Terry was there when Gord wrote the WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD and those electric guitar riffs are indeed Terry's. Gordon Lightfoot (although his prime years may well be behind him, is still a legend.) Oh by the way, I used to work with the Bass Players' song Jeremiah!

This is absolutely marvelous. Thanks for posting. Not too much music like this anymore. I so miss this so! I do music myself, and only wish that more people could just sit and listen to this kind of music without any loud background. Thanks again for posting.

@elltoft Red Shea was a master, 40 years on and his playing is still unmatched. What a great sound Red's counter-melodies and harmonies made together with Gordon and Rick ....

Just saw Gordo for the second time tonight (6/21/13) at a small, intimate venue.....and while he's lost a bit of the edge, he still knocked my socks off. What a truly inspirational singer and songwriter he is! He can still carry you away to the Canadian North Woods or the Carefree Highway-he sings and you are there. At 74, he can still make magic music. See this great legend while you can!

What a voice... Rick and Red are so perfect for the songs Lightfoot wrote. Thankfully a friend in England recorded this to DVD and sent it to me...The quality is superb for a 1971 television production. I have been watching it over and over since it arrived in my mailbox 4 days after it aired earlier this month. Sublime perfection. Can't wait for the 4 nights at Massey in May...

It’s such a treat to see this footage from Gordon’s prime. What an artist! I’ve always liked Gordon, but really started digging into his catalogue during COVID and had my eyes opened to his incredible talent and the depth of his body of work. Those of us who came of age during the 70’s surely know him for standards such as if You Could Read My Mind, Sundown and Carefree Highway, but maybe not so much for gems like Summer Side of Life, 10 Degrees and Getting Colder, or Early Morning Rain. Plus, he had the musical chops to write the music and lyrics. Who does that? And as some have said, in his prime, he was such a force on the 12 string… no drums needed.

bensisko16, this is the true beauty of KZbin. So many good people sharing POSITIVE, yes, POSITIVE comments about a muscial artist we all like very much. NO harsh or disrespectful comments. No hatred, no religious chatter, nobody is right or wrong. Just simple appreciation for fine music from a fine musician, that's all. Greetings from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada.
