Gordon Moore Park closed due to sinkhole; Federal investigation underway

Federal investigators with the Mine Safety Health Administration are asking people to avoid Gordon F. Moore Park due to mine subsidence.
“It’s scary,” Seantra Vaughn said. “If it can happen there, there’s no telling how many places in the park it can happen too.”
As scary as the situation may seem, the Illinois State Geological Survey says more than 330,000 homes spread out across 201,000 acres are in close proximity to active or old mine works.

They built a new high school soccerfield over an old dump in a city here and it failed, they new it was still burning because it was an old dump, but 20 years later built on it anyway. Location location location. Because it was taxpayer funded.

True, in southern Illinois this is more common than you think. I recall a few years ago when a small sinkhole opened up under a golfer during his backswing. He dropped down about 15 feet. Wasn’t hurt, fortunately.

Used to have a sinkhole in Chicago down a street that opened up again every 5 years. Was over a large sewer pipe. Swallowed a car once.

@@ShayJaxson-m2z Yes, they do! Ask anybody who lives in Florida, for example. There are 3 within 7 miles of my house. The fact that marydaleo3701 hasn't seen something doesn't make it fake! She hasn't seen the back of hte moon either. They happen suddenly, usually without warning, and people have failed to get out of houses than sank quickly. Cars sink into them, and people have to run for their lives. In 2006 a sinkhole suddenly drained Scott Lake in Florida and in 1981 drained Lake Rose. Read about them online.
