Gordon Ramsay is nervous and out of his depth as he tries his hand at sushi while on a visit to Aaya, the award winning Japanese restaurant in London's west end.

The subtitles are completely wrong at 2:36, the chef is actually saying "Ramsey-san is someone who would be able to do this twice as quickly." He's complimenting (and challenging) Ramsey, not talking him down.

Most people don't really respect sushi as an art, but it really is. It takes skill and good speed to get sushi out at optimum freshness. Gordon always seemed harsh, but I love seeing him this way. For once, he's not the all knowing chef. Instead, he's the student out to learn, and he honestly seems ready for a harsh chewing out. People seem to have the wrong idea, thinking that since Gordon made it look like something that could be learned in a day, they could somehow do the same thing. NO you idiots, Gordon has had 20+ YEARS of experience in the kitchen! OF FUCKING COURSE he can learn to make basic sushi with an instructor hovering over him! He's had 20 years of knife skills, learning how to deal with rice, veg, and fish, just in different circumstances. I bet the majority of you can't even cut an avocado properly like the sushi chef did, much less layer it on to a roll! You lot would be stuck washing rice for years. Gordon spent his time honing his skills in the kitchen so he can adapt to it much quicker than any of you. Becoming a real sushi chef is hard, grueling work if you start from zero.

+john hollister Apprentice sushi chefs are commonly relegated to JUST washing rice for 4 years or so, and it's literally just washing the rice, nothing else. Actually cooking the rice takes another couple of years to master, and so on and so forth.
@sandrobindelli56079 жыл бұрын
+Galactic123 I can say that on my own, with online info and tips, it took me about a year only to make proper gohan (sushi rice) and a couple to just filet only 2 types of fish (each type of fish/seafood has it's proper cutting technique...that's why training lasts years).
@willconwayjr58749 жыл бұрын
You can get off of Ramsay's tip. What he did wasn't really impressive. He didn't make the rice which is one of the most important and easiest part to screw up. Nor did he prepare any of the other ingredients. Noticed that he first handled the rice with dry hands. It takes years to become a proper sushi chef for a reason. You first have to learn to distinguish between good and bad sushi rice in addition to learning how to wash, cook, and season it. Then, you have to learn how to evaluate, breakdown, and slice, without tearing, seafood for rolls. I would be more impressed with someone who made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from scratch (baked the bread, made the peanut butter from peanuts, and made the jelly from raw fruit) than a kid who used store bought bread, peanut butter and jelly from jars.
@user-bd6iz5ie7l9 жыл бұрын
+Galactic123 Sushi is not a health food. In Japan, there is food to don't eat every day. It was a aristocrat food of Japan. To eat every day and it is possible to come disease as the European aristocracy. Original longevity village was Okinawa. Because they are not in the original Japanese, They did not eat the fish. Such as pork and herbs we've been eating together. It was a food of the rustic public. sushi material. Rice, Vinegar(6), Sugar(2), sauce(2), Lack of vegetables, the other animals shellfishe sushi can not be a health food. Sushi shop owner also does not say that healthy food. If you eat as a health food, it is wrong. And no better the case of roll sushi.
@chrisnguyen118610 жыл бұрын
Okay dammit, sushi isn't from China. The first kind of fish and rice wraps, called _narezushi_ were originated from southeast Asia and did spread to China. However, this was a way of preserving fish, as the fish was salted and the rice fermented(semi alcoholic). Real sushi made on the spot for consumption is called _nigiri-zushi_(rice with fish on top). The rice is vinegared and the fish raw instead. Modern sushi - _kawari-zushi_ - is modern rolled sushi, as Gordon is making in this video. Kyle Aye

Gordon is being INCREDIBLY modest. With his knowledge, skills, credentials, work ethic, he could master sushi in like a year or two. Sushi is very formulaic and repetitive. Most of the work in being a chef seems to be perfecting each and every step in preparation. Gordon already knows what kind of precision it takes to work in the best restaurants in the world. Customers couldn't tell the difference because the ingredients are the same, and no real cooking is required, just precise prep.

Awesome to see such an acclaimed chef be so modest and open when he realizes how precise and specific the technique for this style of culinary preparation is. Usually Ramsay seems to be the authority on food and lets people know; here he is willingly receptive to criticism and open to the fact he needs improvement in this specific art.

I love watching Gordon Ramsay in shows like this, where he isn't screaming at people. His passion and sincerity when not putting on a character of an angry chef can be very engaging and interesting.

he did pretty well, of course someone who does the same thing for 10 years will be a lot better than someone who's done it only a couple of times/for the first time :D still impressive of course

Kaynos You keep in mind Kaynos that Ramsey has been cooking for his entire life, so swapping from one food style to another isn't hard. Once you have the basics intact he can do it, put it this way the thin slicing of the avcoado is not easy and that takes years of practice and he can do that anytime with no problem.
@tonygin59427 жыл бұрын
wait so the fact that he could learn to do it under 2 mins make what they learnt for 10 years a waste?
@wangchungman147 жыл бұрын
ramsay has nearly 2.5 decades of experience in general. His foundation is far greater than most people so some things translate over.

beside of his knife skill and folding skill, none of his experience were meant for sushi tho.

Tony Do-ge experience in the kitchen is experience in the kitchen. it's kinda like a handgun and a rifle. if someone spent 25 years only shooting a rifle and shoots a hand gun for the first time in their life. they're obviously gonna get a hang of it much much faster than a regular person just starting out.
