The Sami originally didn't just live in the Lapland of Finland, Norway and Sweden, they were pushed up north. They didn't have many means to make a living so many were forced to take up reindeer herding. Nowadays, not everyone who herds reindeer are Sami, nor are all Sami reindeer herders. If you meet Sami, do not ask if they are reindeer herders, it's incredibly rude, and would be like asking Native Americans if they work in a casino.

There is a mistake, the sami have not been hearding reindeer for centuries but millenia as they are as far as I know the only indigenous people in europe and were there way before the finnic tribes showed up.
