I'm seriously loving this more "casual" Gordon as a result of the quarantine. He and Matilda are absolutely adorable. He also seems to go into a little bit more detail for these quarantine episodes. As he mentioned; people are cooking now more than ever, so it's nice to see him go a bit more in depth as far as technique goes. He's even sacrificing his 10 minute time in order to do so. We all know how competitive this man is. That's no small feat.

I've made this curry twice now, so let me share a few tips with you all: The first time, it took me an HOUR to make. Shredding the squash and onion took so long. Gordon makes it look so easy, but I spent a good 10 - 20 min just shredding the squash. The dough for the bread was incredibly sticky and I had a hard time handling it without using tons of dry flour. I don't ever make bread from scratch, so if you're the same level of expertise, just know you're on the right track. The bread turned out amazing! It goes so well with the curry you can't afford to not make it! The second time it took about 30 min (I used potatoes instead of chicken, so they take longer to cook). I was over the shredding so I threw all the vegetables in a blender. Sort of a bad choice because the curry ends up a little gritty until you cook it out, but I will take this over shredding any day. I was also missing coconut milk (as every store has been out) so I used coconut creamer (could've done without it), yogurt and milk. Worked great. Overall, this curry is freaking amazing. If you're thinking about making it, DO IT. But just keep in mind unless your hands are as fast and as skilled as a chef, it will likely take a lot longer than 10 min. Happy quarantine cooking!
@sbc29544 жыл бұрын
I'm indian, and I see a lot wrong with this. I've never made butternut squas curry so I won't comment on that, but the roti was all wrong. First of all, he should be using atta, whole wheat flour which is fine. Next he should be kneading for far longer to get soft rotis. I use my KitchenAid dough hook and run it for 10 minutes. My mother worked at one of the best indian restaurants in San Diego, and they kneaded for up to 20 minutes per batch.
@deltabravo45894 жыл бұрын
@@sbc2954 I don't know if he specifically said roti or not. But I don't think Gordon was creating an authentic indian curry, but more of an indian/thai inspired curry. My mom grew up in India and this is not the type of curry we eat at home. But I still was able to enjoy it and the bread.

@@sbc2954 and Dechen B ...I am an Indian mum living in US and travel to India twice a year. Let's be gracious, Gordon is a westerner and his curry in a hurry is pretty good western version, proud of him for that! I take over an hour to cook a real Chicken Butter Masala (he called this) with real homemade masala. Yes I make my own roti and paratha too but that's because I am an Indian by birth :) I am always impressed when a westerner cooks our food ! I’ve cooked my wife’s veg curry just using some techniques picked up from other recipes, as I didn’t have time or energy to follow recipes. Obviously Chef Ramsay has a wealth of experience… but for us novices (daily domestic chefs) the real joy of cooking comes when we do it without constant reference to the recipe. It’s instinctive habits. Thanks for all the tips my son & I will try this for sure in our curry portfolio.

Just made this last night. It was AMAZING. (Few Notes to consider) This really is a “curry in a hurry”.. let it thicken for like 20-40 minutes, it’s worth it. I included a touch of garlic and tarragon, and made a curry blend of Garam Marsala, Turmeric, coriander, and paprika. The butternut squash is very subtle, rich with the slightest sweetness. *if you do not have a cheese grater, use a food processor and be patient. Add a little oil while you do it. It worked fine for me.

He has tons of experience and he has everything almost fully prepped (plus a LARGE kitchen space whereas mine is dingy, about the size of a community college desk). I'm not really good at cooking meat, but overall cooking time for me took 15 minutes. I needed about 7 minutes to shred my ingredients and about 5 minutes to make the dough) I also made the dough beforehand (it was the first thing I did). My biggest issue was the lack of kitchen space (my counter is basically non existent) so I had to pick up and leave stuff on the floor, had to be more careful. It was good, but I didn't really like the chicken breast. Next time I'll use dark meat.

coconut milk curry is probably the best thing I learned from my ex. Asia markets sell curry paste. To my experience much better than curry powder. But be careful - they are often very spicy. Bit of oil in a pan, just the paste in first (a tea spoon per person), spread it out and roast it a little bit first. Get the moisture out of the paste, then put the coconut milk in. 2 tea spoons of paste for half a liter of coconut milk works for me. Let boil up, reduce heat and put in whatever vegetables you want with your curry. They all have different cooking times. I would avoid cooking the curry for more than 10 minutes, because the water from the milk separates from the oily parts and you lose a lot of nice taste. This literally works with almost any kind of meat. I made swedish köttbullar as a thai curry today and it tastes amazing.

Watching him cook at his home has dawned upon me that Mr Gordon Ramsay is actually a very polite and loving person. I have not watched too many of his TV shows. I don’t care that it was more than 10 minutes. Your daughter slowed you down, being cheeky🤪 But this makes me want to try the recipe. Very good! My husband and I can’t tolerate spice because the heat creates literal pain in our mouths. BUT I have found that I can use just enough curry in the food, to get the flavor without enough heat to cause pain. And we love it. This will take me longer than 10 minutes, but probably less than 30. And I love that you can vary the ingredients as you wish, kind of like a “formula” more than a recipe.
