Gordon Setter Training - First e collar / remote collar session

First e collar session with Gordon Setter. First we spend a couple minutes no e collar, doing what we will be doing with the e collar. Then the process starts of teaching her what the foreign sensation means by using negative reinforcement paired with positive reinforcement with simple commands that she already knows. This is not about what we want now, it’s about what we MAY need later

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!!!! I have watched your videos for a while and my parents have two 1 yr old boxers. One is reliable off leash, the other IS NOT. She has run off on multiple occasions and taken the male with her. I finally started them on e collars and it has helped tremendously! The female is at a point where I can walk her by herself on a hike and have her stick by m e. With both dogs, she stays on a 15ft lead with e collar (cause they feed off each other’s energy and can run after deer) by the end of the walk if she is behaving I can let her off without her knowing and she’ll stay close! I was very happy to see you work with a dog with a similar run away issue!

Hi Larry, I don't know which video this was, but you were talking about your method to approach a dog and stop right before it explodes. This method has helped me a lot in the past couple days, I've taught my dog to ignore the vacuum completely with this. Absolutely fantastic! Gonna use it with my roommate's dog to get her to approach other dogs calmly instead of barking like crazy.

Hey I appreciate your videos a lot. I have a Belgian Malinois that would run away and get distracted by everything I saw your video about the E collar and went to do more research on it Before I bought it and it works like magic. I never use a leash anymore because he stays right next to me when I ask him too and, it’s rare when I shock him I just press the vibrating and he knows he also gets super excited when I put it on him.

Read Larry’s book and implemented the training with my 9 month old Irish Setter. His recall has become phenomenal and 100% reliable (even up to distances of 200 yards). A+ recommend this sort of training - especially with flushing breeds like settlers and spaniels that are constantly on the lookout for birds, etc.

I have an 8 month Irish Setter who does exactly what you've said this Gordon does in the video. Just bought the Mini Educator ET300 black and will be following Larry's videos to train my girl. Can you advise how long roughly you would do what you have done in this video for? Should I start in my garden and intorduce/do conditioning for say 2 weeks, then move to practicing just outside the garden??

have you done any videos using the chameleon III yet? It seems like the lowest setting may be slightly too high for the conditioning phase. Have you done any introductory e collar work using one yet?

Hey larry I have a one year old dog and he listen great inside the house, but once I take him outside he doesn't(Even with treats or toys). Would e-collar training be a good way to train him outside or do you have another way? Thanks and great video.

From what I've read and his other videos, he holds down the continuous button, gives the command, then releases and marks with 'yes' as soon as the dog responds.

What would you say about using a e-collar on a 4 month old dog, only on vibrate to "reinforce" your commands

Not trying to come across as a "know-it-all" but nobody has replied to you yet sooo.......I think it'll be fine as long as it's introduced and implemented properly........and only on vibrate. I hope this helps. I've worked with dogs for over 37 years.

I'm having a really hard time getting the contacts to hit my Blue Heeler's skin (absolutely no response from him until I'm up to like 60 on the mini educator) should I shave his neck where the collar sits? I have read your book.

Have you tried changing where the contacts make contact? Some dogs need it a little higher up on the neck. Just an idea.....Larry is the expert!

I may be that your dog is a stoic one, like mine, who shows no response to the ecollar even though they feel it. Do a training session and see if he comes to the sensation at the end without a command, that'll tell you if he is feeling it or not.

As you have said there are a lot of dog trainers out there who do not know the proper way to utilize an E collar. What advice would you give to help reverse the wrong type of training? My six month old German Shepherd has received training by a local dog trainer that taught us the incorrect way of using an Ecollar and my concern is there may be irreversible damage done or a very long road to providing effective training utilizing the methods you have discussed.

Not sure if I understand. I use e collars to provide off leash freedom fir my dogs and client dogs. There should always be a safety in place fir that what if moment

I'm asking this to understand as for whether, once the dog is fully trained, would it behave off leash and avoid running away without having the e-collar on or do you still need to have the e-collar on forever? I'm in a country where e-collars are illegal to use except in limited circumstances and dogs must not appear wearing an e-collar in public obviously. My aim is to utilise those exceptions, train my dog fairly well to ensure he would reliably behave even without having an e-collar thereafter. Thank you.

That's a lazy way to break a dog. I've had three GS, and never had to resort to such silliness. What exactly did you think the Duke of Gordon used with his dogs?
