Gordon Stainforth was the editor of "Making The Shining", the documentary made by the director's daughter Viviane Kubrick; he replaced Ray Lovejoy (the official editor) on The Shining after the latter had a problem with his arm.
He tells how dagerous it was to have a tecnical discussion with Stanley Kubrick.

In answer to 'EnergeticWaves' below. My only role in the production of this interview (by an italian film company) was to sit in front of the camera and answer the questions. I had nothing to do with how it was put together, or the use of music etc.) You also failed to follow the story correctly. The dispute was about the difference between 3 2/3 of a second and just over 4 seconds. You are also denigrating those taking part in the dispute: arguably the best British sound editor of the post war years (until his death) and one of the greatest and most technically minded film directors of all time.

Thank you for sharing an amazing story which really illustrates just what an incredibly perceptive and precise artist Stanley Kubrick was. Astonishing.

12 frames is half a second of footage, of course he's going to spot that. I'm an ignorant peon amateur compared to Kubrick but no way would I let that pass either. Its as simple as knowing where the offbeat is in a piece of music.

It sure is difficult to hear the music with Gordon Stainforth speaking over it. ;)

Hi, thanks for your feedback. One can't change the video on KZbin, I'd have to delete it and reload a new one. We are working on the new release of the series and we will definitely focus on the sound quality. Follow us on FB, Twitter or Instagram for more info.

Why have bg music with vocals playing through out the interview? It's very distracting!

Gordon Stainforth did not replace Ray as the editor of the film after the latters accident. Gill Smith did. I know because I was there.

The music in this should have been mixed slightly lower. At a couple of points it makes it hard to hear what Gordon is saying.

Why would someone from Britain argue with an American on how long it takes between rings on an American phone? Any American of that day with spot that right on.

Makes me think of the potentials of MK-ULTRA TRANCE programming, or a Manchurian Candidate who is programmed by a telephone ringing and the command that comes from the other end. He’s so specific, he knew prior to the difference in frequency between a ring with 100 frame delay and one with 88. Why did he know this?

I met Mr Kubrick here in Oxford back in 1984. I didn't know if you knew some cool trivia on some films. Dr.Strangelove and all the other films pertaining to things all have real and events around them. Strangelove was actually operation Hamlet, and The Boys from Brazil if you look at the plane behind Jame Mason it changes from P to B for purpleson and Burpleson, the background numbers and things like Vandenburg etc. Being Bobby Wheelock (Car Russian accident mum and I were in Russia) and in Pennsylvania where I grew up. Juggernaught Mr Hughes and old golf friend of mine and that the Russians lent the boat to U.K... We had terrible trouble with the first Bell lab ear tech. psycho-electronic warfare Intell and others were using to make people assassinate and load else. My birthday and my predecessor watching middleman activity with them. Jan.30th 1972 Ireland. And the encore by rap with newer ones. I would be honoured if you get this message for you to read my f.b. Lots of explanations and evidence needed taking and no one bothered. And Olivier's last words but the water reached everything. Bless him. Hamlet. Your friend Michael Marathon man and Olivier's character is based on a Hungarian billionaire we know and he should eat the diamonds! People said Olivier's answer was cruel but not at him. His Boys from Brazil use of "Free-Dah" as not being a prison guard anymore and Judy and Lou Freed (Freeman) in Allentown were liberated by the Russians.) Kind of cruel as moi Wheel-lock. But the intell from the films valuable. And QB7 With Freedah the liberation of a Polish countess who was shot in the leg running from the camp at the end of w.w.2. Thank you for the great films and work you did all these years.

I was thinking the exact same thing, if this guy is some such great editor, why is that background music there? And they sure didn't teach him anything about lighting. And anybody would know if a phone ring was off by more than a second.

assuming it was shot at 24 frames a second, the difference between 88 & 100 is 12, so that would be exactly half a second... but Stanley sometimes shot at much higher frame rates, so it might have been a quarter second difference.
@michaelterence1662
@michaelterence1662 4 жыл бұрын
Art P: One would only shoot at a higher frame rate if one wanted the shot to be slow-motion when projected at 24 frames per second. There are no slo-mo shots with a phone ringing in "The Shining." Also, regardless of what speed the film was shot at, 35mm is projected at 24 fps, and the same speed goes for the magnetic sound stock on the mixing stage. So, 6 frames of picture or sound=half a second, projected.

Energetic Waves: Do you really think that when a person sits down for an on-camera interview, he also lights the shot and mixes the sound? No.
