I think the PP&Q narration states that Thomas had teased Gordon about falling into the ditch on the same day (presumably referring to his "ditchwater" remark at the start of Down the Mine), not that he had fallen into the ditch on the same day.

8:30 Thomas doesn’t return the favor because In the episode sir topham hatt doesn’t bother letting him ask his question. After letting Gordon speak, he gets to the point of forgiving them both and explaining his arrangements for the queens visit. If he allowed Thomas to speak I’m sure Thomas would’ve ask if Gordon could pull the express again.

I would imagine the track leading to the ditch in the episode is just to keep the model going forwards into the ditch, as once it came off the rails it would lose power and stop.

And that’s why the turntable would stop before Gordon drives into the ditch because I don’t think the model would be able to move while the turntable is moving

The engines didn’t run on electricity through the rails though, they were entirely remote controlled.

You're wrong about the episode version of "Paint Pots and Queens" placing "Off the Rails" on the same day as both it and "Down the Mine". The narrator says "First, Thomas had teased Gordon about the time that the Big Engine had slid into a ditch." The _teasing_ is what the narrator says happened earlier that day, which occurred at the beginning of "Down the Mine". The actual incident between Gordon and the ditch is said to have happened at some other time before then, on a different day. So the episode version of "Paint Pots and Queens" is only set on the same day as "Down the Mine", while "Off the Rails" happened before both on a different day.

There's a bit more to the process behind Thomas going to the mine in the third story. When Wilbert Awdry stated in the book that ''he had to push empty trucks into one siding, and pull out full ones from another'' he was briefly noting that Thomas had brought the empty trucks to be loaded up with the lead being mined out, before taking away the loaded ones he had brought to the mine empty on a preceding visit. Basically a cycle commonplace in rail freight operations. Also it should be noted with the final story that whereas the painter straight-up scolds Henry for spoiling his paint, in the adaptation this was changed to a sarcastic sneer. 8:34 Thomas asked TFC if Gordon could pull coaches again at the end of The Trouble With Mud. They completely mishandled the continuity with this run of stories. Also, in Paint Pots And Queens, Henry telling James he can't climb hills is a direct reference to Leaves, but it's lost on the viewer at this point because there's no visual flashback or other reference to indicate this.

Absolutely. Series 3 was made up of original stories by Allcroft and Mitton (some of which were adapted from magazine stories by Andrew Brenner) and Awdry's stories, although a lot of them were so far off the original stories that you wouldn't notice if you weren't a fan.
