The Ferrari F140 V12 will probably end up being way more reliable than this Cosworth engine and go to well over 100,000 miles with more horsepower. We will find out soon enough with the Purosangue, because SUV owners put way more miles on their cars.

Never say "ever" considering we still have at least, minimum, another 15-20 years of runway for small batch manufacturers to make their swan song ICE engines, maybe even more with synthetic fuels. Those engines will make these engines look like something from 2003.

Exquisite! Cosworth wowed me when they unveiled the DFV, but this is from another world. The world of engineering and production materials and processes have changed a lot in the past 55 years. I remember the issues with the crankshaft for the Chevrolet 454 cid pushrod engine in 1968-69. We had several crank failures on the dyno until we had a solution for production engines. Unlike a drag racer, we could not just drill the counterweights and insert some Mallory metal. Seeing this engine revealed in so much detail just made my day. My hat is off to every engineer who worked on this!

Crunching the numbers on Gordon Murray's T.50 car: with 120 hours per engine and one expert assembling them at 40 hours per week, it takes 3.5 weeks to complete just one engine. This means we can expect a maximum production of around 50 cars a year. Such exclusivity will surely make them sell out years in advance! As word spreads, even those not usually into cars may see the T.50 as a savvy investment. What's truly remarkable, though, is the T.50's usability and the design philosophy behind it. Gordon Murray Automotive doesn't compromise on quality, avoiding common misconceptions in car design. I can relate, as I also appreciated this approach when I owned a Mk1 VW chassis and maintained its full suspension range. I'm grateful for the "benefits of industrialization," which have allowed me to own fantastic cars at reasonable prices, like my 1985 E28 535i that I bought for under $5,000. While the T.50 might be out of my budget, I appreciate the innovation and boundary-pushing it represents. Thank you, Gordon, for constantly striving for the best in automotive design!

Thank's for sharing this and giving us a good tour of what these magnificent engines look like inside and out. I have no doubt at all that they will indeed go down in history as one of the most awesome builds from this time. I don't think people will ever stop building engines, just the mainstream cars will not be using engines. That means that the only engines that'll be being built will be great ones like this one and they'll all be built by passionate people who love engines. People always do the things they love better than anything else. Edit: My god, seeing all those engines together like that took my breath away, and that's not easy to do with me. I'm literally watching someone's dream coming true.

I have an old DFV block made into a coffee table , came out of a McLaren , has a plaque on it stating it won the Belgian GP in 1982 with John Watson driving it , then it blew up at the Monaco GP , big hole in the side of the block where it threw a rod . @ 8.38, the way Gordon describes the two way inclination of the valves reminds me of in the 60's In technical drawing, I used to to work out the length of an line in the technique called Lines In Space, the line was inclined in two planes, all done by drawing, no calculations. I watched some interviews where Mr Murray was being interviews about the cars, a year or so back, and the T.50 has everything I'd want from a car - super/uber or not - and avoids all the stuff I'd really dislike in a car. it's one of the very few modern cars I'd have on my (big win) LOTTO list - strangely enough, Mr Murray has designed another on the list, the T.33.

Genuinely curious as to why the expensive gear driven cam set up was “the only way to go for 12,000 revs.” when motorcycle engines rev way beyond this using cheaper, simpler (and almost certainly lighter) chain cam drives. There’s obviously a good reason Cosworth went this route, but I can’t believe it’s just revs. 15,000-16,000 RPM is standard in 600cc sports bikes, with some of the smaller race reps pushing 18,000+. They all use cam chains. Is it a reliability / longevity thing, perhaps?
