I doubt I'll find one for two quid but I'm doing the exact same, that last layer to protect my pod was going to be a solognac furtiv but the bivvy is full cover and cheaper to boot👍

Love this idea and you have got me thinking about something else for me to make! I prefer hammock camping but here in the Alps, especially in summer, it's nice to get above tree line. That said, having a system that works on the ground too, at no additional weight, would be perfect. Cheers!

Easy make with maximum benefits. Summer-time use great, add tarp and a sheepskin & blanket great for winter. Blocking convection from under the hammock is so beneficial....thanx for watching bud...bex

Interesting you do a similar setup to me. I also use a British army issue bivi, the main difference is that I put the longest side to the top, this way it covers the whole hammock, not quite so easy to singe up as the cord to do this is now under the hammock but I can manage it ok, and because the entry/hole now sits under the hammock I don't need to singe it up so much, so get a better air flow into the bivi but still rain proof. The success of this is mostly down to the quality of the Bivi, I also have a Spanish army issue which is not Gore-tex and that gets too wet inside from condensation. I did not try a bivi ridge line yet, will try it later this week. I also use a custom made long sleeping bag (one and a bit bags stitched together) in a cocoon configuration. Although only a cheap one/two season bag I can (with bivi and tarp) get down close to freezing (no pad or under quilt).

@@bexbugoutsurvivor I tried the ridge line idea to hold up the bivi last night but in the end preferred to use a short stick between hammock and bivi, tied something soft at each end to protect the hammock and bivi, works a treat.

How my hammock bivvy works. The cold air you breath in, requires the lungs/heart to work twice as hard, in order for your body to produce warm inhalation of breath. To counter this The adjustable ridge is there to produce a microclimate (above your head) the air you breath in is warmer than the outside ambient external temperature, and the inner core organs perform at a warmer rate. The exhalation of breath warms the inner bivvy, yet allowing 100% air ventilation. See the night camp test. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGO1o6h7iqiGrMk

@@bexbugoutsurvivor So I moved away from the stick idea to support the top of the bivi, now I use a small (marble size) ball of wood to make a tie off at the top the bivi above my head then tie the tie off up to the ridge line. This is simple and reliable. Tested last night in the rain.

I think 2019 is penciled in for bivvy camps, using a combonations of the Dutch and British and vintage bivvy kit nights. The prequel to it is being filmed now, some great kit to see for gound systems....

Yes, for light showers its fine, think I did that very thing on the overnight test, which you will see tomorrow. The goretex is more for wind protection, with out the ridgelinge and cinched it up under a basha works great too. Use it a bunch of times now...ATB Bex

Having now bought two British army issue bivvy bags, it turns out they are different. One has an extra panel sewn in making the opening much larger. Q. Which one do you use for the hammock pod?
@bexbugoutsurvivor
@bexbugoutsurvivor 4 жыл бұрын
I would use the larger of the two, as in tent mode the bivvy is further away from your face. You can make it smaller again using the draw cords, but a smaller bivvy can't be made bigger. I am still keen on sewing two bivies together neck to neck, and create a side or bottom opening,... I used the sleeve of an old waterproof coat to go over the suspension ropes, where the hammock meets the carabiners, this prevented external ingress of moisture.....bex .

@@bexbugoutsurvivor The one with the extra panel is 45 inches. My other is 35 inches. This may actually work out better for my idea of creating a hood that over laps the smaller one from the head end. Still working on the idea before I cut anything.
