A basic video on the fact that GORE-TEX is worthless in shoes and how to choose your shoes when it comes to hiking. Trail shoes, trialrunners, mid or high boots...what is best for you. Is it rubber boots maybe!?
I will go trough the questions you need to ask yourself before going out and buy your shoes, what are they for really? Will you do mountain climbing, off trail hiking or stick to the trail.
The Shoes you see in the vid is linked below:
Merell Nova GTX Trailrunner (GTX version sucks, but is very comfortable)

CRISPI A WAY/MONACO MID GTX (Great mid boot, but go full leather instead)

Having a real problem finding something that fits my strange shaped feet...well, I didn't know they were strange until I started this process of trying to find just the right hiking shoe/boot...need something with low ankle, high arch, and is flexible along the tongue, but stiff enough on the side...lol...the search continues...thank you from Nova Scotia, Canada...new sub and look forward to more great content...

Welcome to the channel ❤️ and yes, finding the right shoe/boot is difficult especially if your feet are not “standard”. I have good experience with Merrell and Crispi, so I tend to stick to them for hiking. But...so many shoes out there!! I wish you good luck and hope you find a nice pair 👍🏻

Great channel. One of my favorites! I am planning a trip to Sarek this summer (first week of August, 7-8 days, 12-15km a day, 16kg backpack, one easy summit maybe). I am considering the Lundhags Vandra II mid for this trip. Do you think it’s a reasonable choice? Many thanks in advance and again great job with the channel!

Thank you so much for those words 😊🙏🏻 and regarding shoes, actually never been to Sarek myself yet, but I have seen everything from boots to trail runners and it is very much a personal choice. I know there are a lot of water crossings so if boots…you also need shoes for those crossings. If to recommend anything I would say to go for what you like the most…boot, trail runners or other. Personally, I would go for a well ventilated trail runner or shoe that dries quick . 🙂

I've been regularly beating on a pair of Adidas NMD CS1 Goretex and similarly Free Hiker Goretex and unless you're going pretty far off the beaten path in most cases the waterproofing has been consistent and unfailing, my largest complaint about the shoe is the environmental viability of the waterproofing materials

Great to hear there are some good options out there that actually work, great news! Nice to be able to have dry feet sometimes, especially autumn when it’s a bit colder 👍🏻 haven’t looked in to the environmental issues regarding waterproof material so much but I’m not surprised they’re not very good for nature!

I do a mix of trail & off trail dirt to mud & water & loose or wet leaf & debris so I like a light weight leather outer Gor-Tex Danner Folsom X Grouse breathable in hot Summer as well as ok in cold damp Always wool socks

Sounds like you have found yourself a good combination and I’m not all against boots and goretex actually and it has its applications although I experienced a great comfort increase switching from boots/goretex to trail runners. As long as we get out there and enjoying nature right 🙂👍🏻

yeah light trail runners are mostly not of leather and then the goretex makes little sense indeed,however like you said with leather outside this can be a good combination. i have a few but more with boots, the only lightweight i can strongly recommend in this category is the american Oboz Bridger Mid B-DRY. they are an absolute rare unique gem in their class i believe. absolute light weight , robust, good support durable, and yet waterproof. now i must say i didnt tried them in conditions all day rainy, i have boots for that, but i did during summer/spring hikes some creek and puddle crossing and my feet stayed perfectly dry! recommend them to all, they are superior in the lightweight class

I walk daily with our dogs. Yesterday it rained the hole walk. I was had my Lowa renegade shoes on. The store were i purchased them told me the shoes are waterproof on my walks. My feet got wet yesterday. I clean them and impregnated them often, with nikwax suede and nubuck proof, I don’t trust my shoes anymore. I purchased real leather shoes a few months ago. We walk daily with our dogs in sun and rain. What would your advise be for my walks in rain? I also have leather boots, but i can’t walk very long on them. Greets from the Netherlands🙂 Marieke.

Hi and welcome to the channel 🙂 your experience regarding goretex and shoes are about the same, a big disappointment right 🤷🏼‍♂️😄. My best advice, for dry feet on day hikes and longer walks, if boots is not an option would be a mid boot/ankle boot in full smooth leather that you can treat with grease/wax/shoe polish. And with Goretex…that combination works fine and will keep you dry for a full day. Don’t choose mocca/nubuck and textile. That’s my best recommendation…for longer hikes I rather be wet those days of rain and dry up during the night. At the moment I use the Altra Timp 3. 🙂

In the military we had to treat our full leather combat boots with oil and military leather care, every week. We actually put a thick layer of the leather wax between the soles and the upper boot and then we used a lighter to heat the wax up. That way it literally went into every little space between the boot and the sole. We would march for 20 kilometers through rain and little water streams without getting wet feet. Ive had gore tex boots since then and they just dont seem to be as comfortable as quality leather boots. Now im always on the hunt for new surplus military boots. 😅 Once you break those in, they feel like a second layer of skin.
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh Жыл бұрын
Yea a pair of thick leather boots is nice after braking them in, uses Red Wing boots in my everyday life but for Hiking I prefer a trailrunner due to weight and comfort. Also don’t mind getting wet during the day anymore, but takes some time getting used to. Nothing is wrong or right…one should use the type of shoe/boot that works the best for you and just enjoy being out there 🙂

I agree that waterproof trail sneakers are dumb but... That's not the Gore Tex's fault. Also, the disc golfers may disagree with us. With backpacking/hunting boots GTX is essential with a capital E.
@roberthammenrudh

Yep GTX works much better in boots 👍🏻 so for hunting and such or if you as a hiker prefer that I also would pick a pair of boots with GTX 🙂but for sneakers not so much! Haven’t played disco golf but am a golfer…and golf shoes/sneakers is waterproof but like never uses GTX! ( what I know)

@@leewatts1570 well I think the point being that if/when you get wet in a Goretex shoe…they take forever to dry. If not wet from a stream, it’s from rain, high wet grass or other vegetation.

@@leewatts1570 Goretex shoes for simple and short day hikes will be no issue because you are going home that very day. Try hiking in them in all types of environments for multiple days/nights and long distances. Theres a reason why you barely see people using them on long trails such as the PCT/AT/CDT or even Ultra Marathons. Even the Military does not use Goretex boots/shoes for a reason. Have a good one!
