I know this house well. It's just down the road from where I live. It was in terrible condition in the early 70's and was bought by a local couple who did the restoration. It was a showplace in the county for a number of years but the couple had some problems and there were legal issues as I understand it. This video was shot just prior to someone purchasing it and it is now undergoing a second restoration. They are making good progress at returning the home to its former glory.

These federal style homes are absolutely beautiful and I love marveling at them myself. However, the issue is these homes go WAY beyond basic restoration. Structural or foundation issues usually are the culprit for why these magnificent homes lay abandon and buyers back out altogether. My family owns a historic federal home(thats actually a historic landmark) built on 1780 that had WAY less damage than this They sunk more money into bringing that home up to code over the cost of buying a brand new one. While I appreciated their (and my own) love for historical homes, I had to question how financially sound this venture was and wouldn't wish that financial headache upon anyone. I don't mean to sound negative here. But, unless you're willing to sink in some serious cash and have a disposable income, these places are basically money pits.. That home took probably took tens of thousands of dollars to restore. The structure alone (lifting and repouring foundation, restoring eroded bricks,reinforcing) I don't even want to know what my dad spent on restoring the interior. If you have that income, go for it. I'm just simply implying neglected homes usually need more than a coat of paint and love. It takes some serious $$$$.

@RosemarieComtois-qs8ce4 ай бұрын
Whoever did the painting was meticulous. But in order to live there , there needs to be a truly functioning bathroom which could be added to the back , in keeping with the present exterior . Also, the kitchen needs help. As for neatly done openings , in hardwood floor to the back...that's done either for ventilation or acting as a register to send heat into dwelling. But they did not want a register as it would detract from the time frame house was built , when the only heat source were the fireplaces. In the 1700's whoever built this house had money. Most people were living in log cabins they built themselves in the woods. Villages were more sophisticated . But this property had an outhouse deffinitely. I wonder how much land goes with the house. There is no discernable driveway , which makes snow removal difficult. It's nice to imagine living in a home like this, but you still have to do laundry etc. The room upstairs with the sunken tub was likely not finished off and in winter clothes would have been hung up to dry, supplies would have been stored there .

Someone did a lot of work and upkeep on that house. (I think I saw tyvek/insulation under outside loose clapboard - they then replaced all original clapboard in original position?). I'm a plaster repair person and the walls are immaculate - hardly any cracks (fireplaces always have damage around cause they move and leak). The walls look like they were scraped and scrubbed of paint and wall paper down to original plaster at the same time they painted the woodwork. This house is a time capsule - pretty much intact for 240 years?!

@wendycrawford17923 жыл бұрын
@@brushcreek42 Actually, it would have been painted, originally! For a house of this period, they’d use milk paint. Oxblood red was very common. The early settlers wanted colour in their homes, especially if they were from a Northern climate where the winters were long and over caste. The bright colours cheered them up. Secondly, having things painted was a trend. Everybody did it. Thirdly, if you buy an old cupboard with the original paint and strip it, you’ve automatically dropped the value of the piece, dramatically! If you can find a really old piece with the original paint, it has way more value than if it was stripped. Those days( 70’s- 80’s) when everyone and his brother was stripping furniture down to the plain wood are over. People now realize the beauty of historical colours. Hundreds of paint companies now specialize in historical colours. I don’t really like the colours these people used, especially the dark and light green which would never have existed back then. It’s a personal choice, of course, but l love the historical colours. Any pioneer village that you go to will feature houses with woodwork and walls painted in original colours.

Aimee, I understand where you come from I prefer an all natural look. But we must remember but this is a historical home so to keep it in the correct time. You must use the materials that they used. But during the era that this home was built and the particular Decor of the woodwork the painting is what was done back then. Mainly due to the fact they didn't know what polyurethane was. Hey Kappy ! Wow Brother , I haven't seen or been in a house like this in a while . Incredible craftsmanship . People took pride in their work on this one . Even the lock sets are still there . I used to rebuild old locks like that , made good money doing it too . I think the slots in the floor was for venting , ac floor register . But , I could be wrong ! Thanks,,,,,

Well we just bought an old farmhouse 1918 with 8or so acres. Been done moving in not unpacking that will take forever. But we are done going back and forth on a three hour drive back and forth. No more we are here and very tired. Has two red barns many outbuildings a huge basement. 2 bedrooms upstairs 1 down. The windows 3 in LR are 6' X 10' so massive. But the view. Has two bathrooms very unique. So awesome. Old farmhouses are a combination of more than one house. We have found 3 different add ons since 1950 was last add ons. Two mud rooms one on either end. This is gonna be fun. Have 3 pigs in one of the out buildings. My kids want to get goats to eat alot of blackberry bushes. Not now. Well this was a great video. See ya in the next video. By Ryan. Peace Jeanie.
I love how you show all the wood accents,door knobs and those fireplaces💕💕thank you for the amazing videos

What a great find. Those fireplaces were _gorgeous_ . I loved how each one was different and how some of them matched the wainscoting. Beautiful place. I hope someone saves it. I also hope you feel better soon 🙂

What were the doors on either side of the fireplace in the first floor room? Thought sure you would open them or look in the open one. Was that a bathroom under the stairs?

Kara, I thought I was bonkers as I caught it out of the corner of my eye and had to pull it back for a second look. (Fixtures for a full bath (??) under the staircase?? Innnventive! :)

I think the doors you're referring to are pantries and walk-in pantries at that! Ingenious use of space. The upper class Colonials built houses that are works of art. Their quality craftsmanship is the reason many still stand.
