Gorilla Brothers' Curiosity A Pigeon in Their Territory (Viewer discretion is advised)

The gorillas from Twycross Zoo have an injured pigeon in their enclosure. Viewer discretion is advised as some might find it upsetting. The video includes Shufai shooing the bird with his hands to hurry the bird along, or they are beating their chest at the bird. Neither gorilla purposely injures the pigeon. There was some shoving that I cut out as the pigeon got distressed and no one needs or wants to see that. Lope is unsure, investigating, and he also seems to protect the pigeon at times and chases after his younger brother when he's annoying the bird.
Shufai is chasing after the pigeon in an upright position, beating his chest. Both are watching the pigeon, not quite sure of what to do. I wondered if Silverback Oumbi is going to come out and how he would have handled the situation, but it was only the brothers that had seen the bird.
The GoBros stand there watching when Lope decides to take a stick to investigate. He's not poking it hard; he's been quite gentle. Smelling his stick afterwards.
Shufai is shooing the pigeon along, even going through the puddle and throwing his toy in the air. Lope is more gentle, reaches out, and touches the pigeon with only one finger really carefully. He smells his finger. When he turns around to face the pigeon, he holds his hands, just watching the bird. Shufai starts to wave at the pigeon with some wood wool, Lope comes charging towards his brother, but he slips. He sits by the pigeon for a second. When Shufai was about to go back to the bird, Lope starts to chase him away. Lope comes back around and sits by the pigeon again and chews his toy. Lope found a kong a bit further away which he's chewing now and lying on his back when Shufai comes charging down the slope, clapping his hands. Shufai nearly slips but can recover. When Shufai comes running passed Lope, he gives chase again. On the second chase, Shufai accidentally falls and rolls backwards. Shufai sits in front of his safety door for a minute and then goes inside. Lope moves on and goes back to the pigeon. This time he charges the pigeon and beats his chest. When Shufai is back out, another chase, and Shufai goes back inside again. Lope slides on his back down the slope and beats his chest again at the pigeon, but then leaves it be. When Shufai waddles after the pigeon again and beats his chest, Lope comes to the rescue and chases Shufai off again. Lope has a little slip but still carries on, and after that, they left the pigeon alone as it was time for their next scatter feed, and they kept themselves busy with the food.
No one else from the gorilla family noticed the pigeon.
The staff knew about the pigeon, but unfortunately, they seem to be unable to help or remove the pigeon. My guess would be that it was because they had trouble getting Lope in at lunchtime; they did try, but he just didn't want to go inside.
The pigeon was still alive by the time I left in the late afternoon, but to be totally honest, as the pigeon injured itself flying into the enclosure and then getting gorilla handled (some shoving), even if they did manage to remove the bird later on, I don't think the pigeon could be saved.
I'm often unsure whether to show some videos or not, but it has always been my belief that it's crucial to present all aspects of animal behaviour, not just the favourable ones. By observing Lope and Shufai in these diverse situations, we gain insights into these remarkable creatures. Although at times it may be difficult to witness, it reflects the realities of the natural world, both positive and challenging moments.
Why did I write " Shufai sits in front of his safety door" :
Gorilla Lope is staying outside most of the time now. As Lope is staying away from his dad, he spends most of his time outside and will only go in if he's sure his dad isn't close by. Shufai knows this, and every time he has had enough of Lope's chase, he quickly goes through the door, inside to hide. It doesn't take him long though to come back out again as he loves the chase as much as his brother.

Thank you SV for uploading. We must remember, that although we may want to cutie-fy, (not a word but describes what humans try to do), animals, gorillas are not human. Instead facing life's reality is what we need to do. What this fabulous clip shows me is that gorillas, although strong and powerful, are gentle at heart. They went out of their way tried to gently shoo the pigeon. Then up the game to communicate and inform the pigeon just whose boss here with the chest beating and charging. Lope seemed more empathetic towards the bird, displaying his fine quality as a potential family head. He was very protective and did not want his brother to bring the bird harm. He tried everything to make it fly away, but did not understand that it could not because of it's injury. This is a lovely insight into how gentle these beautiful primates are and why I love gorillas so much.♥️🦍♥️

Lope is handsome young Silverback. He looks so gentle with the pigeon. They were just curious and had no harm intent to hurt it. I love how lope chased Shufai. My heart aches knowing Lope has to leave. 😢 I understand why, doesn't make heart hurt less. Thank you, SV, again for all the beautiful videos of the Tywcross Gorillas. ❤

Oh my heart 💜 just goes to show you how gentle and curious gorillas can be,, but the funniest part Lope with the stick touching the pigeon, and then smelling it 😂😂😂😂😂 they reminded me of 2 kids playing with a bug and saying to each other you touch it NO you touch it…

Thank you for the great description. Our favorite roughneck rascal Lope was surprisingly gentle. Like someone said, Lope was encouraging the pigeon to fly away. Shufai is Lope 2.0! Very curious. I wonder as well how one of the older gorillas would have reacted.

Was thinking the exact same thing. The chimps would have had the pigeon for dinner and it would have awful to watch. Gorillas are bigger but more peaceful.

Lope seems so sensitive and he is looking like a silverback rather than the lovable little rascal he was. Poor pigeon. I wish he could of been saved. Shufai seems insensitive.
