@BigDaddyWes4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisM-qo1jc Well the gorilla is just repeating a learned response. They aren't really "saying" anything even if they're mimicking ASL. Any gorilla you've seen signing is responding in the same way as a dog that sits on command. They're just doing the thing they've been conditioned to do in hopes that it leads to the outcome they want. It's very easy for us to assign more significance to these behaviors than is really there, but if you actually look into gorilla sign language experiments, you'll find they're plagued with wishful thinking and bias. There's no legitimate evidence to suggest they actually "understand" sign language. Just that they've been taught signs.
@geenarage4 жыл бұрын
honestly
@BigDaddyWes4 жыл бұрын
@S. O. Mimicry is not a comprehension of the complexity of language. It is much more rudimentary in terms of brain function. Many creatures are smart enough to think through the process of "Press button - recieve affirmation." Gorillas are quite intelligent, but they simply don't have the capacity to comprehend language. They never developed the need for it, unlike how we developed the need for more articulate communication through more complex social structures. It's the difference between how your dog gets excited when it hears the word "treats" because they know that means "I'm about to get food." And our being able to have an actual conversation. You can get philosophical about what communication is, the function of language, origin of intelligence etc. etc., or talk about how human babies initial development of language comes from mimicking their parents, but language compression is much more than "Mama Dada." Or "Food (shakes head). A human baby is genetical programmed for spoken language. The gorilla is not. Even examples where a researcher raises a gorilla from birth (Koko) doesn't change it's genetics. They're just pavlovian responses to stimuli.

@Pikora Animation because you got the teachings to do so, Gorillas eat medicinal herbs and plants that natives used to sooth wounds and headaches, they have been shown capable of learning patterns, which is the very fundamental of all language, and can solve problems that they are given, sure they're not on the level of humans, but they're absolutely not at a level where you can discredit them in anyway, writing a book? monkeys carve markings into trees, which is also the fundamentals of writing and language. Coding a game, that's something more digital that's still based in language. Humans have the power to learn great things, because of trial and error over a couple hundred thousand years, Apes just haven't had the push to do the same.

Koko not only could sign, she also lied. That takes a higher level of intelligence than just signing or mimicking signs. She got angry one time and tore the sink off the wall. She than told a person that her female trainer had torn the sink off, but humans are not strong enough to do that because of the way it was attached. I had a college course called Primate Behavior. It was co-taught by a biologist and an anthropologist. We each was assigned a primate to learn about, and since I was a Masters student (not in biology), they gave me chimps. For my paper, I concentrated on communication among chimps, which led me to review studies on communication between humans and the other Great Apes. They are amazingly intelligent beings.

I think a lot of people are slightly missing what's happening. He is well cared for because a researcher wants him for his research more than likely (hence the sign knowledge). He isn't saying "I'm hungry, these people aren't feeding me" He said "Gorilla, Don't feed" or "Don't feed the Gorilla" Because it is a part of the zoo rules. He is a good boy and deserves whatever zoologist approved snack he has waiting for him. Pretty adorable imo EDIT: 4/3/2020: Whoa, didn't think this would blow up. I see plenty of people replying with the same basic principle (albeit roughly put by some); "we love animals and it breaks our heart seeing them in this condition" to that, I entirely agree. However, what you should consider is how domestication created homosapian dominance. It is a tool we used and wish to pass on to the closest genetic neighbors we have on this planet, the great apes. Since I'm not replying to any individuals be aware the following three points are my opinion and I am not an approved zoologist nutritionist or researcher in anyway (no more than you are, yes you, if you are please send creds and it would be awesome to talk) 1: "This is a horrible condition to live in! How you would like it?!" A: ok so this isn't the monkey holocaust, we arent aiming for a kill count in the zoo's, that's the poachers who hunt just for kicks or the businessmen mowing down rainforests. Modern times require modern solutions, they may not be ideal, but the zoo and research may be their only hope to progress in their evolution without being eradicated. Zoo's often have better living conditions than our prisons (which are mostly full of nonviolent drug offenders) 2: "they shouldn't be domesticated! They arent pets!" A: You are correct, they are not pets. Because if you had one in your home it would rip your face off and leave. The issue here is because of how the current stage of domestication looks. Dont ever forget that we humans domesticated ourselves and for our efforts became the apex of earth. Our trade can carve and cut through mountains, our arrogance can punch a hole in the ozone and a single word can destroy the earth and everyone on it. How? Language. If we can pass that on then we have secured the future of another species to become gods like us. Arguable that's what happened with our rise from primitive beings. A nameless god came and went. We are the fruits of their labor. Don't you wish to see how domestication can enhance our brothers? We could commune with them one day as if it were perfectly normal! Not you or I, but perhaps our descendants. (Unless somebody uses the destroy the world word before then...) 3: "I don't think he is saying that! I think he is saying this!" A: this one is kinda funny because I am also guilty of that in my original post. This only proves, to me at least, that they are more like us than we care to admit. Tell me, how many different ways can trump be understood? Seems like everyone thinks he is saying different things bad or good. What of the bible? How many men have died simply because of a misinterpretation? I could go on but my point is that words are the source of both our power and our suffering. Words can hold great power but like djinni in the lamp we must be wise how we phrase things. Now how many ways could this ape friend be interpreted? Simply read the comments, those actually proficient in ASL are thinking he is meaning various things. Can we ask him what he meant? No. Sadly no. I feel more bad for humans now honestly, we domesticated ourselves so well we have no conscious idea anymore that we prefer to live in our cages WITH RENT OR MORTGAGE then face the harsh realities of the wild. Life is an expense to us not an experience. That cage we will never escape and worse yet we will tell the children of tomorrow that they MUST pay for their cage. So, I'd love to be a "good boy" and "get an approved zoologist snack". Beats the human cage anyday. Hopefully the AI overlords will like my existentialism and keep me as a pet. Beats being hunted and harvested by em! Hahaha!

@birbopikle64314 жыл бұрын
@Mr Mistah Strangely enough... We don't quite know that. Especially considering most of the ones who've studied in the field have a bias to begin with. Since we're culturally and socially programmed to see ourselves as the superior animal. Hell, most people don't even have the brains to question their own bloody intelligence, leading to the Dunning Krueger effect running rampant in a large percentage of the population. To put it simply... We're just a different breed of animal. That's it. We can try as much as we might, but eventually 'monkey brain' takes over and we do stupid shit.

@@birbopikle6431 A good bit of studies are starting to show that dolphins are quite intelligent. Same goes with octopus - squids. Baby chimps are actually smarter than humans of the same age. Scientists aren't sure of why that is either. Problem is the way that we consider "intelligence" is based on human minds. We hardly even understand out brains, so understanding other species is difficult. For a long time we thought Neanderthals were stupid / unintelligent. Now its turning out that they had tools/yarn - etc independent of Homo sapiens, probably weren't hunchbacks like old illustrations used to show. They probably just had "different" brains / instincts. Its becoming less of a "probably" as scientists have frozen Neanderthals / genetic material and have started to study their brains.

I think he wanted the orange but was trying to follow the rules... Gorillas dont understand right and wrong(probably) or know why their trainer will give them some food but discourage them from eating others(general self control, some food is unhealthy, and some things if eaten can be deadly) so, was trying to understand if this was an exception or a new situation, or if at the very least if they could get away with it, although this particular gorilla, to my untrained eye, seemed to be trying to 'do the right thing' and was just unclear as to what that was... Normally dont eat food not from trainers, but also normally follow humans lead as, ideally, the humans in charge are doing whats good and best for them
