Kit, as always a great livestream. I wish I could have been there to ask questions. I appreciate you pointing out the pros and cons, being fair as always. The ghosting really surprises me with BSR. Even though it is probably a couple years away, this gets me excited for the A4X2. The A5 size isn't perfect for academics, but Boox is just too many tradeoffs for me. the deal breaker for me is always the dark grey screens. One day maybe amazon will do something wonderful to the OS for the Kindle Scribe, which, for me, is hands down the best eink display available. Problem is, it’s a kindle…

I afraid to say, that dark screen is deal breaker for me. Since it does not have front light I hoped it was bright as Go 10.3.

Yeah, me too, the difference to the Go 10.3 isn't huge, but to the Viwoods it's pretty noticeable. 🙂

I just checked out Brandon’s note max video and the screen doesn’t look quite as dark as yours Kit. (Visibly more difference between the screen and the grey frame around it). Do you think you might have one with a manufacturing issue?

If you can could you compare flipping or going through a large pdf file on the boox max, go 10.3, viwoods and tab x? I want to get the note max for large pdf reading and annotating and I already bought and returned remarkable paper pro for its lower text contrast and dim light which didn't increase background light during the day and made it harder to read small text even after I bought a stronger desk lamp.

I haven’t seen the Note Max, but have tried the RMPP and didn’t find the Go 10.3 any easier to read in daytime dimmish light. If I used my devices only at a desk with bright lighting it would have been fine, but after that experience I don’t think the Note Max will work for me though I love the size.

It was supposed that Carta 1300 would be 16% brighter than Carta 1200, but the opposite is true. I am confused about what the issue is. Note Max is almost dark as Kaleido 3.

Yeah, I don't get it. I don't think I've seen a carta 1200 at 13.3" so maybe it's still true. And honestly it's not as dark as the Kaleido 3. It's closer to the carta 1200 on the go 10.3. but I've been surprised that it wasn't brighter!

@@KitBetts-Masters I'm puzzled by this as well. How did they manage to make it darker? It's night and day difference between note max and A5X2. Are there any settings in the device to make it a bit brighter?

@@NBot0 No it does not have front light so you can do nothing about that. Just use it under enough light.

Dear Kit, thank you very much for testing Note Max. Unfortunately, the background isn’t light enough for me. I’m curious to know whether the Palma 2’s background is as light as 10.3’s or it is darker.

Also, not sure if the screen is actually darker, at least not significantly. Brandon made the point that other screens (such as the Tab X, not Carta 1300) are more yellow - but not necessarily lighter. Just a different color. Chalid actually used a (luminance?) meter and only observed a 1% difference from another Carta 1300 screen device.

Hi Kit! Great review! Just one comment. I don't get why people complain that it doesn't have backlight. That's the whole point of eink screen - to be light on the eyes. If you have to use it in the dark with backlight on it's the same thing as using an LCD tablet. You will get a little of eye-poison either way! I always use my eink phone or tablet in a well lit environment.

One thing that I’ve found out recently that I could do on my Tab Ultra C is that I can send my book highlights directly to Readwise

It’s from the cloud services. Where you link either one drive or google drive. Now you have the option to link Readwise. This will allow you to see the highlights. I was a bit disappointed but then I found out that you can open a book on the new reader and then export highlights to app and they will be send to Readwise. I could make a video about it

Hello, thanks for the review you are awesome, i have one question about the Max, boox list the carta 1300 as only having 16 shades of gray, on my the go 10.3 it is 16 shades on default until i go to E-ink center > Optimize > (Display) Use app's original DPI "on" > (Color) Image Smoothing "on" in the apps i want better shades, could you check if the image improves to 256 shades? i use that on the apps where i read comics since i think you dont need it for writing or drawing is the only thing keeping me from buying the max. Thank you

@KitBetts-Masters I was wondering about the refresh modes in the eink center. Does the ghosting improve when you go to the MORE button? Does the Max have the ability to turn on automatic refresh and can you set Current App to Full Refresh by click count to one? I know in the Go 10.3 it has those options but only for Normal and Regal modes. I know there isn't a Regal mode available but maybe that could help the refresh and eliminate the ghosting issue?

I just bought a tcl nxtpaper 14 inch tablet. It's pretty cool, it has a matte screen and two e-paper modes. It's still an lcd and definitely not a true e-ink device, but i think it's a good option for someone with a 10.3 inch boox tablet if they also want a normal tablet that's good for reading. You should review it, it only cost me $700aud.

There really aren’t any good options for eink tablets with large screens that can be used in low light environments. Thought the Note Max would fill the bill but after viewing Kit’s demonstration, it won’t, unfortunately. The only option is the iPad Air for now.

I’d say the Remarkable Paper Pro is very solid, depending on your use case and need for apps.

I was so looking forwards this , saw the 10,3 GO , had the finger on the button to order to finally get to an a4 pad then pow, saw the grey screen. No chance will have to wait I guess for some time, perhaps the colour version when it appears I dont want to move off android , will trudge on with the 3c for a little while longer.

The screen responsiveness looks surprisingly poor with the available refresh modes in comparison to the previous BSR enabled devices.

It appears Boox actually improved the refresh options, but it seems many are missing it. Under A2 speed there is a slider. I think (don't have mine yet) this allows you to more finely adjust the speed settings, more so than just the four previously allowed. Boox could probably do a better job of communicating this change.

Thanks for the reply. When I paused Brandon's video, under the A2 on the speed tab there was a slider, - to +. It said increasing the slider would increase the speed but also add more ghosting. Hope this helps.

Disappointing. I managed to score one on a christmas release through Amazon. I’m very interested in battery life. Hopefully a way to remove the ghosting easily. Why the leg on the larger marker? What was that about?

interesting little side note: the Note Max has the exact same SoC as the Tab Ultra C Pro (the Snapdragon 855), so from an application performance perspective we can expect this thing to be a speed demon as the TUCP blows away everything else in all the performance tests reviewers have run on it. it's even twice as fast as the (quite quick) Note Air 4C.

This new Boox is just barely lighter than my iPad Pro - far TOO HEAVY for handheld use for very long. If you want a desktop device, just get an e-ink monitor. Otherwise, the 10.7" Manta is as big as I want to hold. People who want to surf the net should just get an iPad in a smaller size - no ghosting, no flickering, no need to refresh etc.

Emporer's new clothes in full force here - influencer says screen is "significantly" darker, when the actual difference between the Max and Go 10.3 is tiny. Despite this, loads of people agree with influencer, many of them to the extent of it being a deal-breaker! Madness.

If you can provide a timestamp I'll stand corrected. I think I made the point that it was a slight difference that you should be aware of.
