They don't have a set genre. Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett are the only constant musicians, although Damon does more of the music and Jamie is the illustrator. They then collaborate with other musicians to write and/or perform songs

19-2000 is just a nod to the new millennium as it was first written in 1999. I could be wrong (probably am) but I took the lyrics and imagery to be metaphors; Buying lead Nike shoes/Keeping grounded. You must make your own shoes/Individualism. The rollercoaster road/Your journey through life. Objects in your rear view mirror/Events that have happened in your past. Repetative pumpjacks/Monotonous human work Traffic signs/Pathway choices. The third sign is "The Overlook Hotel" from The Shining", I couldn't believe it when you said you hadn't seen it, it's such a class film. Sorry I've gone on a bit 😂, can you tell I loved this and listened to it a lot in the past...ahh happy days 😁.

Nice reaction! The Overlook Hotel is a reference to The Shining. The song came out in June of 2001. It was their second single.

If you're willing to do a longer video, there's a video called Journey to Plastic Beach that has Murdoc narrating a story about finishing the Plastic Beach album. It also has 2 songs from the album. There's a version on KZbin but the quality isn't very good.

The song was written at the end of the 20th century. According to the fictional band member Murdoc "...19/2000 fitted the bill. It was that or 'Millennium' and that's a s--t name for a song". Its about how we should slow down and enjoy ourselves in a changing world. "The world is spinning too fast, I'm buying lead Nike shoes, To keep myself tethered, To the days I've tried to lose" I think their first album was good but the second album is my favourite. You should check out "El Mañana" or "Fire coming out of the Monkey's Head". Thanks again Lee.
