He interprets Damon's music and incorporates the idea he gets into the characters and discusses about them with Damon. But the one who wrote the dialogues for the characters is Cass Browne. He also co-wrote the lore with Jamie, but left Gorillaz after Phase 3. So you can see that since Phase 4, there's no world building and the new lore is extremely minimum

Noodle moves on in the conversation, but Russel brings it back to patronizing and abusing children. He is saying, in no uncertain terms, that Murdoc had and has value, even when he was being abused as a child, and that he knows why Murdoc acts the way he does - because a wounded animal is more aggressive than a healthy one. Russel has grown as a person, and is more willing to understand him. He was touching Murdoc’s leg throughout the interview, hinting that he was either comforting or trying to, in an unspoken way, send a message of understanding, which was met with confusion and slight aggression.
