when i was about 11 or 12, i was given a non-graded assignment in school to present a song to the class and talk about it for a few minutes. i chose this song. i loved empire ants SO MUCH back then and to this day i still love it so much. all my classmates watching me present looked so confused and uninterested as they didn't know this song and thought i presented something "weird" or "obscure". even my music teacher looked unamused? i do NOT regret it though. everyone else brought in mainstream music of the time (2016/17) whilst i introduced all these kids to a BANGER. i hope they're all listening to gorillaz now. kinda random but thought i'd share this anyway :)

This song will never stop delivering the most of love and soul that went into developing these characters. It reflects on the whole journey in such a bittersweet way. Even when Gorillaz eventually dies out, Empire Ants will live on forever along with other masterpieces under the band's hood. Truly mindblowing.

My little dream, working the machine Soon, like a wave, empires will fall And closing in on you, they're going on Little memories Your little feet, working the machine Say will it spin, will it soar? The first time I ever listened to this song I had just started reading 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I must have played this song on repeat at least 20 times. So now every time I hear this song I picture a hot and humid summers afternoon, resting upon a chair on a patio in some villa in Macondo, the sun streaming through the trees and fresh fruit piled up high on a kitchen bench and rotting on the streets. Interesting how music can do that, even though this song and the book have little tangible thematic similarities lol.

My mom owned both the self titled and demon days CD. I remember she gave me the CD for Plastic Beach for my birthday. I had already heard songs like Stylo and On Melancholy Hill with the internet, but I wasn't much of a full album listener back then. Afterhk hearing the entire CD, I remember being awestruck with this song in particular. It is a feeling that is unmatched and in my opinion no song will ever match that feeling that I felt then. It was this feeling of nostalgia, sadness, melancholy, but above all, with a slight tinge of hope and joyfulness. Gorillaz has and always will be one of my favorite artists period. And this song is easily one of my favorite songs of all time. Even now, 13 years later, 27 years old, hearing this, still gives me vivid memories of the first time I ever heard this song. Thank you to my mom for me putting me onto Gorillaz and their amazing music...

in this song Noodle is suffering because of the existence of cyborg Noodle. Indeed cyborg noodle is a "being" ruthless and able only to follow orders. This reminds Noodle the terrible past she lived when she was a child, the past about the project of the supersoldiers .....with cyborg Noodle it is as if Noodle's terrible past returns to the present. The machine may be cyborg noodle and/or the entire system of the world, that now is like a big machine. The little dream is Noodle's dream of a purer world and of a simpler life (remind the windmill). The collapsing empire is the actual world, where everyone have to work as they are machines (like the ants) and are included in rigid schemes (even mood schemes). The ones who refuse the schemes and live with different ideas (me included, haha ^^; ) are always easily targeted by the world (the empire). I think so ^^

Matteo Di Carlo The song's about the everyday person (the ants of the title), but a cog in the machinery of society("Your little feet working the machine"), who uses music("polyphonic prairies") as escapism. The first part, that 2D (Albarn) sings, describes how even as the world falls apart around us, music allows us to float away and above the disaster; the second part, sung by Noodle (or Little Dragon, however you want to see it), talks about how we trudge through societies obligations and niceties, using our personal dreams as motivation to keep going ("Little dreams,working the machine"), hoping either to make them come true, or to move society forward, instead of just letting it idle in place ("Will it spin? Will it soar?") Oh, joys arise, the sun has come again to hold you -The happiness that morning brings when something happens you expect. Sailing out the doldrums of the morning -Going through the morning calmly. The polyphonic prayer is here, it's all around you It's all around you out here -How music today washes over us, and takes place into our part of waking up. And if the whole world is crashing down on you Fall through space, out of mind with me -And instead of waking up calmly, and nicely... TO something, you wake up to a horrible life, a horrible existence, a horrible experience; Let your mind go. Where the emptiness we leave behind on warm air rising Those are the shadows far away -When you finally leave, you look at the negativity in your life, your negative existence (by your standards) and you see that all of it is just 'warm air rising', or in your mind. In those shadows, far away. The falling of the whole empire, it's here to hold you Rolling out and haunted till it sinks -And while everything collapses, good or bad, there's a unification in how if all the world breaks and cracks, we all offer our hands out. But we know we'll roll out of the destruction, and sink back into the corruptive behavior our world is doomed to. Noodle (Little Dragon): Little memories, marching on Your little feet working the machine -Waking up, you immediately assume the position of moving the world. We've done it all our child-hood, and we've never had the chance to grow up, inside ourselves, because we've constantly moved the machine, 'with out little feet'. The memories of our childhood just march on through our head, whenever we think of this. Will it spin? Will it soar? My little dream working the machine -You have no idea how the world will go for you when you wake up. Will the world just spin- will it be dull, and crappy? Will it soar- will it be meaningful? Soothe like a wave It passes far -When we trudge through the day, we want disruption. We want chaos, and in our minds, it's soothing. Closing in on the moon From where we are -Having the chaos over-take even the moon, but just in our mind. It'll never happen. Overall, I believe this song hits on how the human mind thinks and how we are when we first wake up into the day, how our existence as an 'ant' tends to feel like an entire 'empire' on our shoulders. It just speaks of our feelings day to day. Routine feelings, because we are like ants, in constant routine, doing whatever we do. And sometimes in an ants routine, a human steps on it's ant-hole, and ruins a colony. We didn't know if that day would soar, or spin. Just a thought.
@phoenix94eternitythebest989 жыл бұрын
Mario Flores Garcia yes, indeed. But there are 2 things: the world is bad, but it is not true that the corruption necessarily take our souls, everyone can be stronger than it, it just depends by the character and the attitude of a person. Moreover a dream is not air rising and it's not dust. To tell the truth even this world could be only a long dream, the thing we call "imaginary" may be real or inspired by other real things. What we call reality is what is SUPPOSED to be reality and the same is about imagination. In truth the humans are not so onnipotent for saying what is real and what is not real. At the final this distinction itself fall down and all we can say is that there are just different worlds. So there is nothing illusory and bad in dreaming, and we can just say that actually we live in this world. Many humans have a so strong desire to give an explanation to everything, but it's a silly desire. I have not this desire. How I go on? well the world is so terrible, but the feelings can overcome everything and I had the luck to give and receive wonderful feelings. Not everyone are able to not be corrupted by the world, and the ones who are not able to do so, say that it's impossible, instead of admit their weakness/less strongness. it takes courage and stubbornness for living with a free mind. This had to be a reply to you, and it became a reply to the song itself, perhaps

***** perhaps I misunderstood what you said, but if you are saying that I'm having a cookie, you're so wrong. I just use my mind a little little little bit more than just for eating, drinking and sleeping. Surely I don't need the approval of the entire world, cause the world don't scare me, even if I had the entire world against me. If you are imagining me like a snob with suits who think to be a superior being drinking cups of tea, well you're wrong. I'm just a person with a mind and with a heart, and I'm not ashame to say it
