Gorka 3 Review: Russian Mountain Suit for Bushcraft

A look at the Gorka 3, the Russian Mountain Windproof suit. It is a phenomenal piece of gear. It is tough, resilient, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The fabric is similar to that used in the Russian poncho tent, the plash palatka. It is absolutely brilliant.

heres some gorka tips 1. soak it in camp dry or other water proofing spray. 2. add thread to the buttons. russian gear is notorious for losing buttons. 3 . in winter wear fleece pj pants under the pants and use a m65 jacket liner under the jacket and it will keep you warm and cozy down till at least 30 degrees

nice thing about gorka is it protects you from brush. ive ran through briar patches and brambles and thorns and mosquitoes cant bite through it. and the boot blousings protect you from ticks

I have a BARS Gorka 4 and am quite happy with it. Another nifty feature of the side-mounted suspenders is that you can undo them without removing your upper layers as you would have to with conventional braces. So if nature calls on line #2 you can answer without having to take off your jacket; the braces stay on your shoulders until you're ready to reattach them to the side loops on the trousers. I scored a pair of US M1951 suspenders in a local store for $1 (they have metal hooks instead of buttons but work the same way) and made side loops with paracord for a few other pairs of trousers. It's a neat system that's been around for a while and I'm honestly not sure why it isn't a more common feature for outdoor clothing. Thanks for an excellent review on a great investment for dirt-time wear.

Thnx for sharing! Over here we have a relatively big russian comunity because of our near history. As far as i know the Gorka is "the last" layer in general. Mostly there is no other task than protecting the "underlayers" from getting damaged/wet. Keep on keepin´ on....all the best from Berlin/Germany.

I have the same suit, I wear the jacket everywhere, looks great and perfect for the nothwest. I use the pants for working outdoors, excellent water/wind resistant and the color is beautiful. However the sizes are huge and you may want to order a size or two smaller to fit unless you are wearing multiple layers underneath.

The fabric sounds a lot like Ventile, or a similar technology. Ventile is super expensive though! I recall my Grandpa's flying suit outer was ventile.

I build an tent by using three Plash palatka. I was wondering when i get into it and it was totaly dark inside if it was closed. And it was pretty dry after an strong Storm with alot of rain. This review show me that i need an Gorka suit too. Russian military gear from WW2 since today is so great stuff for outdoor activitys. THX for that video. P.s Gorka got tick traps. Very inportent.

I was curious how loud the fabric was. Good info all around. One of the best reviews I've seen. You hit on all of my questions for hunting and all. I want to get a couple eventually. This one and one in the Autumn SS Partizan pattern. That camo pattern will work in Oklahoma for most of my hunting. 👍👍👍 Definitely do a follow up.

I have a ss leto sniper suit its baggy but u ca throw it over cloths your wearing and the suit fits in a pocket :) and u can wesr it inside out from forest green to almost falish green shades

I ordered one for Father's day, got here 2.5 months later due to covid. They sent the wrong size. Soooo, another month or two for my replacement. But the one they sent is excellent. My oldest boy likes it. I also got one in Berezeka camo. They cut me a great deal since they sent the wrong one.

It's only good in light to medium rain for short periods of time. They will soak through in wetter weather. It is definitely windproof and light though not as light as modern tech fabrics.

You're getting me excited about the Gorka suits! I think it's treated similar to the Fjallraven gear with Beeswax/paraffin bars and heat. I would avoid washing your coat at all if possible or just clean with a damp rag. If you do wash it, use cold water. I ordered the Gorka 4 and I also worry about it being a little too warm but I mostly want to use it for winter. I was thinking I might be able to mod in some zipper vents in the pits like a snowboarding jacket.

Washing those often will make them lose color and go almost white. Thats why washing often not recommended. If washing i'd recommend use slightly warm water and not agressive modes. As for temperature, i was wearing my summer variation with just one layer of outdated type thermo under it at -40c in wind and was just fine

What a thorough and interesting review! It sounds like the weave is similar (at least in performance) to the German moleskin fabric. For their price, I think these are an unreal value. Sure sign of summer is when the beards come off!

Excellent you know your stuff! The Soviet M88 Afganka Winter and summer uniforms and Gorka suits are excellent. I got to buy lot's of Soviet East German tactical Uniforms in Berlin after the Wall fell and later in the Estonian Army I got to see test , evaluate a bunch of the later Soviet/ Russian battle tactical Uniforms. Some excellent stuff. Which occasionally offer to collectors/ outdoor activity persons. Such was part of my duties to help test evualate, experiment and design uniforms for the then fledging Estonian Defense Forces Army.

Alpine Alpine It isn’t waterproof per se, but very water resistant. Also, the way the suit fits, the majority of sits away from the body off the skin, so even as it gets wet, it isn’t in contact with the body and still maintains insulation. I don’t see there being any problems with snow at all.

Nice! Enjoy the gorka! The shirt was my favorite woods shirt. 100% cotton that I found at a thrift store for $3. Had an accident with a drier. It was light and breathable. Dried fast. In hot weather it was enough protection from sun and brush. For the gorka, I would hand wash. I use a 5 gallon bucket with cold water. Ring it out a bit and then hang to dry. The machine will bleach it out Cheers Jess

it has a thin mesh trap in the pants of the gorka 3 (not in the 4). I usually don’t use them, just check regularly.

Element Bushcraft and Survival I think I have a 54/6 Either should work. They synch up quite well due to the elastic in the knees, waist and wrists. The extra room will allow for more under-layers. I would definitely recommend the Gorka 3 over the 4. Being able to open the jacket up is a huge plus.
