You need to seal up the entry points so they aren’t able to climb up the pipes into the walls. Also set out snap traps under the house. What you want to do is bait the traps but not set them and leave them for about a week so they can get use to them and eat the bait. Rats are very ski-dish, you are gonna want to set them up in pairs, 3 in a row, with this you can bait all 3 set the middle one and not set the outside ones this allows them to get use to the traps and bait so when they go to the middle one they will set it off. Also call a pest control company if you find burrows they will be able to send someone out that is licensed to use some kind of tracking powder to the burrows. I am currently working in pest control and do this all the time.

Hey Uncle Ben! I wouldn’t necessarily recommend duckweed as if you don’t want to spend time maintaining the pond it’ll just overtake it completely, including killing any plants you might want to put in there. I’d recommend other floating plants like miniature water lettuce or anything else that’s legal in your state. The most effective plants for filtration are ones planted in the water that come out of it like reeds or papyrus or possibly even something like lilies or lotuses but it’s up to you. Anything that has its roots in the water but it’s leaves in the air will do wonders since it’ll suck up all the excess nutrients that allows algae to grow.
