The kingdom of Goryeo (고려, 高麗) was founded in 918. It unified the Korean Peninsula by subjugating Silla 신라 and Hubaekje 후백제. The name Korea is derived from the name of Goryeo. It was first used in the 5th century when Goguryeo (37 BC - 668 AD) shortened its name to Goryeo. Goryeo was established by Wang Geon, later Taejo of Goryeo (877-943, r.918-943, 왕건 王建), a general of noble Goguryeo descent. He was born in Songak (송악, 松嶽), now modern day Kaesong (개성시) in North Korea. Goryeo also used the names Samhan and Haedong, meaning East of the Sea.
In this episode, we will take a look at Wang Geon’s life from being a prime minister in the kingdom of Taebong (Later Goguryeo) up until his unification of the Korean Peninsula. We will focus on the years 913 to 948. First, we will take a look at how he founded the kingdom of Goryeo. Second, we will talk about the Khitans who will constantly be a problem to early Goryeo kings. Finally, we will take a closer look at Wang Geon’s 10 mandates to his successors.

taejo founded goryeo as a empire its was demote bec of King Seongjong brother of empress chunchu later its was re-establish under emperor mokjong but under regency of dowager empress chunchu it become a kingdom totally until the deposed replace by lee songyee founder of jeoseon dynasty under king wangjong become a vassal or a allies so korean till now was a kingdom since then

It's Hanja (Chinese characters). Koreans used Chinese characters for most their history.

@@emiliofermi9994 What do you mean? I've read parts of it and I CAN understand it. Also, Hangul wasn't invented until the Joseon era, and even then the Sillok didn't contain much of it.

@@darpmosh6601 Hangul, a modern Korean writing system, was invented in the early 15th century. However, other Korean writing systems other than Hangul already existed before that. The Korean writing system was first invented in the late 3rd century. Characters such as "Gugyeol", "Hyangchal", and "Idu" were written systems used in Korea before the invention of Hangul. This has had a great influence on the writing system in Japan since then. Japanese katakana originated from the Korean Gugyeol. Read the paper named "Is Japanese Katakana derived from Korean Kwukyel?". It's a paper written by Alexander Vovin, famous Japanese linguist..

Modern Chinese cannot understand the classical Chinese of the 7th century. You'll have to study classical Chinese to understand it..

I believe without doubt now that biggest power more than military and monetary ,is nothing but cultural manifestation through series and movies .. LANGUAGE is the key to any political rising. Korea made its way more than Japan itself...Turkey still ahead via Ottoman series because of the Muslim population growing number. Mongolian/khitan were they Muslims??? I see them in Turkish series omnipresently in Ertugrul. Lastly, great documentation especially the illustration exhibit..

A lot of Goguryeo/Goryeo people came to Silla after its fall. Later Goryeo literally inherited the name. Many of the founding people were Goguryeo lineage.
