Elsie (Emily Watson) expresses her frustrations about working for the family and gossips with fellow maid, Mary Maceachran (Kelly Macdonald). Unfortunately, for Elsie, when Sir William (Michael Gambon) is ridiculed by Sylvia McCordle (Kristin Scott Thomas) she forgets to keep her thoughts to herself, defending him in front of everyone, and losing her job in the process.
