Great advice and a great way to start without going down the electrician/plumbing qualification route. Having said that you may discover your niche that you wish to explore further. The demand for home handyman services where I live is very high, lots of people want shelves and general home maintenance work done. Set up a reputation of trust and quality of work, word of mouth soon starts to spread. Above all be honest to your customers and honest to yourself.

The biggest scam is the government control of "trades" that they tell people is for their protection. What it has done is make it difficult to have proper market competition which is the only way to actually improve the market. The UK government at some point will try and control all of the minor jobs a well in the future.

Hi. I have really enjoyed watching your videos, very informative and easy to understand. But if you wouldn't mind, I have a few questions. I have some experience in the electrical trade, but never got an apprenticeship unfortunately. So I'm uncertified as a qualified electrician, but I passed my 2 year electrical college course. But in terms of trade work, that's all the official experience I have. But, I do have experience with working with tools and making things. Joinery is something I know I'm good at. My dad was a joiner/antique restorer, so I have picked up skills from him over the years. I currently work in the civil services and I'm getting a little tired of it and really don't fancy being in this kind of work and working long hours and nights. I'm 38 and looking into the possibility of becoming a handyman. Which is what brought me to your videos. So, what would be my best chance of getting things going. Qualification wise, what would help bolster my chances. I thought of doing a multiskilled trades course. But I'm not sure if that would be enough. Honestly, any information you can offer, it would be massively appreciated. Thank you in advance

Ah, caulking is a different thing over here. Caulk is usually water based and used mostly by decorators for gaps in skirting (baseboard) etc. Plumber normally does silicone after 2nd fix. Yeah, snag list is all the stuff that should have been done when the house was built. 😂

Another niche trade (which requires no 'official' accreditation to do int UK) that I'm semi-interested in is locksmithing - being able to get someone into their house at night and fit a new lock to their door is both valuable and fairly simple. I work in a key-cutting shop so have a rough idea of what it involves. I aspire to run the shop myself in time, but if retail doesn't work out long term it's something I'd look into.

I would like to do something like a handyman, I am ok tiling and woodworking, but i find it takes me too long doing some jobs. Hung a new door on Saturday luckily I didnt need to trim the door and the hinges on the old door were not rebated so I did the same to keep the gap down on the lock side. But fiddling about the frame was aluminum so had to remove pop rivets and install new hinges the same way, first lock went ok, but the dead lock took ages. it was fiddly and the bolt recess into the aluminum frame was a pain. probably took me 5-6 hours. Here in Australia a local company to do the job was $750 doing it myself cost $300.

Agreed, houses are chucked up now a days. I live in a "new build" too (built 2012) and I'm pretty lucky as mine is generally ok but it's hardly the work of Brunel... The vast majority that are out there are built to a cost and the trades working on the sites are on a price and usually working to stupid schedules to appease some idiot in an office who wouldn't know a spirit level if it hit him in the bollocks (emphasis on quantity not quality). All the big private building companies care about is profit and it shows, chuck the houses up, choose the cheapest subbies and charge extortionate prices for them as they know they have the market to sell them... Sad state of affairs really.

Sometimes chemicals can clean it up but often once the render is stained the only option is to over paint. Frequently see the problem where there's no guttering or overhang between a section of flat roof and render. Shame - looks nice when it's new!

This is great advice, I tested the water as a Handyman after my day job plus weekends, it went really well but I have trouble pricing. I found that £15 an hour and people still complain about price! Too expensive and the work wont come in. I found that if the job is small and I'm quick it will not even cover my expenses getting there and doing the job. I was wondering if I should set a figure for a particular job rather than hourly. That way I may go onto another job and increase my overall income for that day. Alternative is to charge half day or full day whatever the job. I'm confused.
@GosforthHandyman5 жыл бұрын
For cabinetmaking work I never discuss hourly rates with the customer. All jobs are a fixed price, take it or leave it. You will get folk who always complain - aim for the areas who don't complain or your business won't survive. 👍

Yes price the job. I set up a year ago as a Handyman near Londn. Rates are higher but I have found it much better to price the job. I work at between 30 and 40 pounds an hour minimum job value 60 pounds normally. You will make no money at 15 an hour unless you are booking in full days which would give you 120. Chippies down here 180 day rate plus a bit. You have diesel, insurance, tools etc
