Replacing a Cast Iron Drainpipe / Downpipe & Hopper with Plastic

In this video I'm removing an old damaged cast iron down pipe and replacing it with a new plastic pipe and hopper. Decking had to be partly removed to get access to the shoe at the end of the pipe.

Used to love cast iron drainpipes when I was a kid, Stuff the bottom of the downcomer with newspaper and set light to it, The sound coming from the top was like a wailing banshee LOL

Eeee, I noticed @ 5:58 the plumber lowered his drill by the electrical cord, done it for years when up a ladder, but one day the drill would just cut out and when I checked the wiring there was no metal attached as it had sheared in half and was just touching causing it to short, I now attach a string to lower it.

How long did this job actually take? I have cast iron gutter down pipe completely full of sand/detritus and outlet below ground. It's hell to try to clear. I just want to smash the thing off and replace with new.

Hi. Wonder if you can help. I live in an apartment & I have a blocked 4 inch metal down pipe, it has what I can only think us a 'service plate' on it & I'm sure that's where the block is as water doesn't go down it, it just goes past & to my bath/basin, the 'service plate' is rusted. How do I remove it?

If it's 4" that sounds like the soil stack rather than a rainwater downpipe and it could be blocked with all sorts of nasties! If it's cast iron it ain't gonna be easy to get in to that service hatch. I would get the whole lot replaced with plastic. 👍

Gosforth Handyman Thanks, It's on the inside of the building, it's the cast Iron pipe where all all tbe water goes. It has a service 'hatch' which is stuck onto the down pipe as it's rusty & that's where the blockage is.

If I didn't have experience in PVC plumbing I'd have had no idea what was going on because it happened so fast. Still have to find out how to get cast iron soil stack apart so I can replace a section at the house.

Sometimes a hammer is the only way unfortunately... try heat but it might crack it anyway. 🛠
