I did mine front and back, went back upto 1m, renewed with new breathable sarking felt, and battens, also 6mm ply from the facia to the first batten. Extra support for the eaves tray, new guttering, etc. Placed reveal liner over timber facia, and new plastic soffit, that was 10 years ago, Enjoyed your video 📹 👍

Nice one, thanks for sharing. I'm not a builder or roofer but i've been a labourer on several roof jobs over the years. I think you are correct, with an older roof it is always going to be a compromise .The felt gets brittle, the batons rot, the odd tile chips or cracks, the more you pull it about the worse it tends to get. Job you did looks fine to me. You didn't finesse pulling that nail, but its a real pain to climb down and go in search of tools. For anyone wanting to pull a nail like that a floor nail puller (claw bar, small) tapped in at 25 deg down with a hammer or the claw of a small hammer (half size hammer) tapped in with standard size hammer is probably the simplest way.

We had the bottom 12 inches of rotted felt replaced on a roof, cut the rotted felt off and sealant bonded a new 12 inch layer to the remaining good felt. This would be good to do before installing the protectors. Excellent, clear video.

I've been in the roofing game since 1986. The best way to do this is to remove the bottom 3 course of tiles & bottom two rows of battons & also the first row of felt (that old 1F will continue to rot over time) Fit the new eave trays & then fit new felt & battons. Replace the tiles & job done.

Yes, you would probably need to get up a little bit higher to do that and this would make the job more expensive. Not everyone wants to do that, but of course your advice is absolutely right.

Hi Andy, you have done a good job there, replacing the rotten baton with a new piece and fitting eaves protectors, that will last years. I've been busy over the past few days replacing the windows in my porch, the old wooden frames with single glass were looking tired and the wood was starting to rot so I fitted reclaimed upvc double glazed windows and new plastic fascia boards and it's looking a lot better now, just got to refit the outside light now. As always a great video full of good tips and ideas, catch you soon take care👍

Hey, boss video. I retrospectively tried to install this type of system but struggled. I ended up using a roll of DPM, it worked absolute treat and cost less than £20 for the full extension.

Its usually easier to push the 2nd row of tiles up to take the 1st row out and give access. Often times its best to just replace the full bottom wretch of felt as its more than likely holier than thou, and if its not before it most likely will be by the time you've fitted the drip trays. Also there was no need to make custom battens 99% of the time the tile will ride over it without issue. The odd time it doesn't you can just split off 6inch or so back like a chamfer to match the thickness. Certainly the height of the batten doesn't matter at all within reason, 19x25, 19x37,19x50 are all the same the important bits the 19.

I have recemtly done some work on a clients slate roof where the edge of the tar membrane had perished. Instead of metal eaves trays i installed a double malthoid bitumen sheet. Same principle as yours. Some nice rubberised bitumen waterproofer would have worked a treat on that crumbling membrane as an addition. Great job there, and.yes it always turns into a two day job 😂

Andy you’re a good lad I’ve watched quite a few of your posts. In this case I think you could have done a bit more. Take off a few courses of tiles take off the battens and the first course of bitumen felt throw them away get some breathable felt and yellow batten. I had the same issue on my house, maybe because I’m a retired chippy I just couldn’t take the easier option. I do understand why lots of folks don’t undertake building jobs but I would encourage people to do it properly if at all possible. Good luck with all your other projects.

Agreed Sir, 👍 I'm a professional time served chippy/Joiner. Those eaves trays are more for new builds or a re-roof. I don't think there great for retrofitting. I make my own eaves trays from 6mm marine ply, usually 10"-12" wide. I'd have put some Iko eaves protector under the old felt and then the eaves trays beneath. If there wasn't a tilting fillet behind the fascia I cut and fit tapered roof sprocket to support the eaves trays. All exposed timber gets a good lashing of Protim as well. He should have taken off the gutters and removed the first three rows of tiles as well, 👍💪🔨🇮🇪

Unfortunately I would need scaffolding to take any more courses off as couldn't reach and that brings its own problems over the lean-to roof. This is a quick fix that will out-last the lifespan of the roof, so there has to be a balance. 👍💪

Andy - good job. You have certainly taken the shop vac to a whole new level. If you want to generate some spare roof tiles when you want to revisit this job (to replace the odd tile that is a different pattern or banana shaped) - maybe consider having in roof (as opposed to on roof) solar panels fitted - the scaffolding will have to go up first of course and then you could redo membrane, batten and relay tiles.😉

I got a so-called roofing firm to do this for me. The problem was they put the drip trays upside down, which made things worse. I later got dry ridge tiles put on the roof, and they noticed the drip trays, so they took them off and put roofing felt in their place. It's been dry ever since. Beware scam roofers. I wish I had.

I had our big 1890s semi re-roofed about 20 years ago. Next door had theirs done at the same time in Eternit so salvaged lots of their slates as well as our own. Bitumin underfelt was put in and despite living about 900ft up in an exposed location there's been no leaks but what i discovered about 8 years ago was that there wer places where it had all frayed before it reached the gutter. Decided to eaves tray it but found that the kicker slate nails got in the way. Bloody nightmare. I had already had to replace some tiles on a small single storied extension where the window cleaner had walked up to do the upstairs window. Crawler and ripper to the ready, strip back 3 courses and use the latest spring loaded stainless steel tingle for the top closer, no problem at all. One thing I hadn't expectd though, was they'd used heavy galvo clout nails when they reslated that as part of the big job [8^O. None of them would ease up, let alone rip so ended up wrecking both the next 2 and the closer slate as well. Anyway, lesson learned when it came to the main roof trays. Managed to ease up the kickers to slip the tray under. found the distance to the nails and trimmed the tray width accordingly. Really ought to have slotted the try around the nails but it was impossible to locate their position. Next problem was the lip on the tray which extended too far across the gutter and caujht the wind. No multi-tool back then so it was tray out and hand-saw the excess off, back up the ladder and fiddle about again. That was the rear 1st floor extension and I was at it for days. Rest of main roof still on the to-do list. Had to go back up a few times to use the silly stuff where one of the lengths had worked loose in the gales. So, if you can, put up with it, the noise will eventually go away. If you can't, get it re-slated with breather membrane and EPs. it will put quite a lot of value on the house. PS if anyone needs any Welsh slates I'v got a couple of pallets full. Cheers

After all the galvo nail doom&gloom yesterday, there is good news for all aspiring slate rippers. In the gales back in January 2021 I lost the cap off a vent slate sitting immediately over our bed. Didn't spot it for about 5 days, rang the insurance, their Adjuster took one look and said that because we had an excess of £500 on roof work due to damage over the last 35 years the likely repair cost would be well below that figure. OK, the wind dropped a bit so up went the crawler only to discover that the cap was secured by 2 screws from underneath the casing. I had an old vent that with a bit of trimming could be made to fit but then realised that the sides of the case went underneath the adjoining slates and the top extended over 2 battens. It was the happy lockdown time so no one would turn out so, not fancying a major galvo-nail war at this point I put a sandbag over the open vent, tied the crawler to the chimney stack, sandbagged it down and waited for the lazy hazy days of summer before I commenced battle. Best decision I ever made. Later on, whilst browsing the binternet, I came across the perfect answer in the form of the "Roof Toof Slate Ripping Saw" price around £22 + p&p. Ordered one straight away and when it came I couldn't wait to get started. Waited for the weather to warm and even though my right hip wouldn't allow me to kneel on the crawler properly so the refitting was trickier than it should have been, the saw made mince-meat of the nails. It consists of a thin 56x3cm / 22x1.25in laminated stainless steel blade with a comfortable handle at one end and a very fine toothed hacksaw blade just projecting from one side at the other. The bladed section is stiffened for sliding under the slate whilst the rest is flexible to facilitate the sawing. In addition to the roof I've since found it very useful for sawing through the adhesive at the back of a cladding panel in the bathroom where the idiot of a fitter had buggered it up. Tends to clog up a bit \8^) but the combination of the and my old slate ripper did the trick. They're available from several online roofing stores and from Amazon. Any slate ripper, trade or DIY, would be crazy not to splash out on this absolutely essential piece of gear. Cheers Stefan

I just broomed,scraped and sprayed with vinegar on the moss growing on my asphalt shingled roof. I built wood scaffolding so I can safely climb up to do the work.

White vinegar works really well killing, moss, grass in sidewalks and weeds. But be careful using it because it will kill flowers and grass that you don't want to kill also. Use a two gallon sprayer. You can spray individual stubborn weeds in lawn without damaging surrounding grass. It'll leave a brown dead patch that will grow back in. White vinegar is an environmentally safe herbicide that dissipates into the ground with no long term side effects. Probably more than you want to know but I've used it for years. Works just as well as chemical weed killer but is safe. Hope it helps!

Nice job! I need to do this job on my roof but unfortunately it's a slate roof not a tile roof. So not so easy to just remove the bottom row as you did with your tiles. The reason I know I have a problem is because I replaced a section of rotten facia board and I can see that the felt is sagging behind the facia where it drops down to the sarking boards. There should be a "tilting fillet" in there to stop it sagging but it looks like the builders didn't bother! This is actually a 2008 build so you would have hoped for better. Any tips welcome! :)

Oh no! Yes, you'd have hoped for better on a 2008 build. I'm no expert with slate roofs. You'd probably need to rip the nails out with a slaters ripper to get the bottom courses off but not easy. I'd get a roofer in for this. 👍

Had to fit eaves protectors to our old garage because the gutter had come away a bit from the roof (the roof eventually caved in, but that's another story) - we just cut down the depth of the eaves protectors without notching it, admittedly I'm lazy and I do minimal effort :)

When you do an annual gutter clean they are a real pain as they trap moss and grit behind the drip flap, I have cut off all my gutter inserts, If you are worried about the felt going brittle just cut and push insert a tile width strip of new felt under the bottom layer of roof tiles.

Houses did not used to have sarking felt. You could tell where the leak was back in the day, now the roof can leak and slowly and just rot away the laths sometimes spreading to rafters. Gaz Yorkshire.

It's probably from years ago but I'd like to get up there with a roof ladder to check things properly. A few ridge tiles were dodgy when we first moved in, but had those fixed.

I want to do this work but also I am thinking to insulate the eves. Currently no felt in my 1930's property so at some point a new roof will be on the cards but till then its DIY work. FYI you can buy 19mm x 38mm Batten's just try the local BM.

There’s evidence of water having been on that under felt. Check the tiles above on the roof for cracking or pieces missing. I had that.

at that point may as well do a whole new re-batten and felt job, a house that old should anyway ! but as he said itll be good for several years max , he can save up in that time for a proper job to be done , he can easily to it himself with some DIY tower scaffolding , tiles are fine , just need felt and battens

Nice job tho I would trim off the old dead felt, it will eventually rot and clog up the gutter. You be amazed how many jobs I seen over the years where facia fitters just poke the felt supports under the first course but on top of the rotten felt! 🙄🙄

It's a felt support tray, it stops the felt sagging behind the facia and so pooling water and then it leaking into the soffit, you shouldn't cut notches in it, it doesn't need to end on a rafter, just 150mm lap taped together with tyvek tape.

Such a good job up until the final few seconds. Tile on the second row up on the right hand side is not sitting right. You can see the groove running up the left side of it where the neighbouring tile should be sat.

a great job but I think you now need to do the right hand side of the property where you started as someone as put the eaves trays in wrong and the area above your hands when the member titles are coming down second tile up is not overlapping to the left hand side and water will constantly be coming in there probably caused the baton to rot out better putting in another tile as it looks different in size also missed an opportunity in sealing down the full bottom row securely sealing each tile with mastic together or if there is a hole on the tile put in a brass screw into it and the baton the edges are more susceptible to wind uplift and rattle. your welcome

Andy, do you have another path around your workshop to the garden? I've seen a few extensions near me on the same type of house where people totally lose the side access to the back of their house! Was this a concern with your side extension e.g. if you ever needed to get a mini digger back there again?

Front / back access is through the garage and we made the openings big enough for a mini digger. 👍

The original lining had splits and is fragile which makes fitting the trays a hard job, its a skilled job imo but I bet there are thousands of unskilled types doing it. You only know how good the repair is after the first rain storm.

There's new membrane on that side and you can just about see it running over the eaves protector. 👍

I just used a loas of cordex protection sheets doubled up . cost abot £30 for the whole roof

Got to say the mastic job confirms what some others said, that bottom strip of felt needs replacing to do a proper job. If your just helping some skint person out ok.

What purpose would that serve? There's plastic under the felt. The mastic was just belt and braces - not really needed.

When i fit eaves protection it allways pays to add a slate batten just under the top of the protectors because water can pool . Allso it looked like water was ingressing from higher up somewhere and was showing very wet on the felt which is what caused the batten to rot.

It's probably from years ago - everything was dry under there and we'd just had biblical rain. We had a lot of repairs done when we first bought the place. 👍

I'd guess £100-200 just to do the eaves trays but they wouldn't have blocked up the wasp holes or painted the fascia. 👍

Well spotted! It's a different design of tile that somebody has fitted over the years 🙄. Probably what caused that rotten batten. I need to swap it out but need to find another matching tile from somewhere. On my list. 👍
