Your video is excellent. The #1 reason that I am looking at a competing brand (Coachmen Beyond) is that I read a lot of stories about the RAM Promaster chassis. On the other hand, the #1 thing about the Travato is the Volta system. The Beyond Li3 is about 160-200+ amps at 12 volts from its second alternator, which means that it will charge its 600 amp-hour bank in about 3-4 hours, double that time, if the A/C is on. (The Beyond A/C is 12 volts, which brings some efficiency.) The Travato, on the other hand, is pushing a lot more voltage through the alternator and can be charged significantly by an hour of charging from the Volta system. Plus, the Beyond Li3 model doesn't have auto-start if the battery bank gets low. Ironically, the non-lithium version has a generator controller which does have the ability to fire up the genset to keep things going, but because I'm camping in areas where generators are prohibited, this isn't really an option. The Ford Transit chassis has some advantages over the RAM ProMaster. It can come with support for two alternators from the factory, has little bit higher ground clearance, a decent engine, and AWD. AWD doesn't raise the van, but it allows for better travel when off-road. The Transit also allows for more towing capacity, and the tow hitch is solidly attached to the frame, while the Travato's cannot be, due to the presence of the black tank at the rear. This is a tough decision, because I like the Ford chassis, but even though Coachmen has a solid coach, Winnebago does have a better floorplan for my needs with the GL. It is hard to decide between chassis versus the upfitted parts. As for a class "B", you stated exactly why I am trading in my current travel trailer. Setting up and breaking camp is so easy in a "B" compared to a trailer, where it takes about 45 minutes to set up and break camp. (Get the stabilizer jacks up, do a checklist, make sure everything is stowed, back up to the camper, hitch... all the little tasks which add up in time consuming. To boot, the trailer has to be stored, which means taking time to go pick it up and drop it off. The Embassy RVs look nice, but I wish they could have a model with a black tank. Nothing wrong with a dry flush or composting toilet, but since I will be dumping the gray tank, might as well just pull one other valve for the black tank. If I were boondocking, or owned property where there was no septic, the composting toilet would be far more useful, but as it stands now, where I'm usually fairly close to a dump station, that is the best for my needs. Of course, it is tempting to just go for a Sportsmobile, but either the Beyond or the Travato meet my needs almost 100%... it is just finding those small details that is the hard part.
@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
I’d suffer with Ram to get Volta. 48 volts of juice anywhere anytime flawlessly trumps the few (but frustrating) issues with the chassis IMO. Keep us posted on developments,

Thanks for another excellent video Scott. Our mileage tracks close to your on our 2019 59KL. We get the same on the highway and a little better than you in the city (13-14mpg), but I drive like the grandpa that I am. We finally have a Volta System that is working. Our Travato has been in the shop several times for a total of 6 weeks down time while dealers, Winnebago, and Volta worked on the system. The last fix was to replace the Volta system alternator which had fried at some point. This was at less than 8,000 miles. Winnebago authorized and new larger alternator with additional capacity. This was done at no charge. We have had several other issues and have at least two more trips back to the dealer scheduled for more repairs. Would we buy it again? Amazingly, yes. There is no other RV that I am aware of that is so nimble and can do so much so quietly (when the Volta system is operating). We are a big fan of quiet.

We lived in Winnebago 1991-2005 & visited the dealer there many times during and after we moved to CO in 2005 & went full-timing 2008-2015. We are getting ready to retire as RV Park managers so have looked at the Travato, Solis, Boltd, & Era many, many times, changing my mind daily about a detail or two. We want to ”almost full-time” between staying with our son in the Chicago burbs & visiting all 400+ National Parks & Monuments. I’ll still work in e-commerce, so the floorplan has usually been my hangup. The GL is not an option according to my wife & the KL may not be the best space for working in a new product launch. Although I am most flexible, I still need to functional. The four class B’s are really the best option for parking at our son’s house to keep under his HOA restrictions. Keep up the good work!

I saw a bathtub in a class B one time, it was across the back we are at the van, with the mattress on top of it. The bathtub could be used either as a dry storage area, or if the mattress is taken off, it could be used as a bathtub. It was a fiberglass tub with the drain in the bottom. You had to be hooked up to water in order for it to fill it up.

I 've had my GL for one year. I have 25K miles and spent 70 nights in the rig. I agree with your assessment all the way around. As for the spare tire that was one of the first modification I made to the rig. Having owned several trucks in my life I can tell you that you DO NOT want a tire underneath the van. They are a pain to deal with in ways you can't imagine. What is your objection to the spare tire on the back? It really is worth having for peace of mind. I think one of the problems with Dodge Ram is dealing with dealerships and their repair shops. I'm loving my GL and looking forward to retirement and spending a lot more days on the road.

@@gosmall.livelarge I was wondering about that, but the tricky thing is this is a FWD van, those rims and wheels are pretty heavy. The KO2 is a great tire, but it is heavy. Scott, great recap of the last 2 years. I, too have this spare tire NEED. Of course, it could be because I have dealt with flat tires in my life so I know how necessary a spare IS in real life. I have been watching TOWB for the various solutions. I don't recommend a swing away because you will lose your emergency exit. You can mount it to the rear door but you already have a bike rack so that doesn't seem like a good option for you, and I would skip the complicated on the roof hoist too, personally. There are 2 ways to mount them on on the front & you are already set for 1 of them. Try searching for front spare tire mounts & see if either one or more suits your needs. Good luck & let us know what works for you!

I am concerned by what sounded like major modifications you made. Basically if I am going to throw down the money they are asking for Rvs now I would not want to keep throwing $$$ into it. The kit includes the needed very small air compressor, which will air up your bike tire as well. That said, you get a hole, a rock tear or spike in side wall the kit will not repair that.

Just found your channel couple of days ago. Lots of good info! I just bought a Winnebago Travalto K yesterday. Been looking for awhile. Actually going to be using it for my KZbin channel and product line, traveling and helping cleaners in my industry. Bought a used 2019 with low miles. Also bought a full warranty on everything! Wondering about the lift. Can you tell me that brand and where you had it installed? Looks really cool...and so does the wrap by the way. All my service vans are full wraps....I might have to consider this yet on mine too! Thanks again and happy traveling!

Hmm.. I thought you were going to say you're planning to trade Lily in for Embassy RV. ;-) I like your RV, I wasn't sure before, but now I really like the color. Anyway, I think I am more leaning toward Coachmen Beyond, I think it's because I like Ford and their cabinets appear are better quality. I must admit, sometime I think just buy the van, do the custom myself with just few things what I truly need. I am a large man, I want my van to be roomy. I am thinking about going to Tampa for the RV show.
@dfloyd8884 жыл бұрын
I have been looking at the Beyond as well, mainly because I prefer the Ford chassis, and know Fords. For example, if you need another key or remote added, most Fords, that is easily done by the user... doesn't need to be hauled to the dealership. From my limited experience, even though vans are not sports cars, the Transit with the EB is fun to drive.

Embassy RV does an amazing job. For me it boils down to floor plan. Even with their Controlled Custom I don’t think they can replicate the 59G floor plan. Someday maybe!

Another great, informative video. I'm still amazes at how little trouble you've had with the Winnebago side of the equation. (Unfortunately not surprised at all with the Ram issues.) @@gosmall.livelarge our 3 years in our G have been just the opposite. Winnebago service really needs to improve their service time. Typically when I needed warranty work it would take a couple months to get in to get it. Regular maintenance takes more then a month as well. The RAM dealers on the other hand longest I've waited has been a couple days and sometimes same day. The Winnebago services on our G has been warranty on the Awning four times and we never used it. It's come out (very dangerous if we were on the road and that happened) while we've been parked four times. We've have two recalls that need to be fixed on the solar plug on the side of the G. We also need to have fixed the fact when we turn on the generator we get no power to the coach. Obviously are situation with Winnebago and RAM has been the opposite of yours. Waiting for service has kept us off the road months at a time. Not good and I've spoken to Winnebago about their service centers and the time it takes to get work done and this has happened in three states we've travelled to to get service. Still love the Travato even with all that. It's been the best move we've made as we started with a travel trailer and then moved up to a 30 foot Class C. this beats them hands down.

@@oldhickory2064 sorry to learn about your experience. Glad you know you still love your Travato. One thing you might consider is finding an RV service repair center that is not a Winnebago dealer to have the concerns looked at and estimated. Take that estimate to Winnebago (WGO) or the dealer you bought your Travato from to get approval for the repairs and reimpbursment under warranty. Wait time likely to be significantly less. I did this serval times and it worked out great.

Nice roundup! Still in love with our NPF Edition KL, not so much with the dealer we purchased from. We just got it back after they took five weeks to repair the Volta system--made worse by the fact that we never heard about progress unless we asked, and they were slow to respond. I haven't heard good things about other dealers in our area, either. As for the van itself, it's everything I hoped for. Easy. to drive, easy to park, perfect layout for 2 adults and 2 dogs. It's our first experience with an RV too, and there has been a pretty steep learning curve. Thank goodness for you, the Travato Facebook group, and the other KZbin folks who have taught so much to this newbee.

Hey Scott does the water heater Through the Truma system require the LP to be on both inside and outside of the rig, and what do you need to do to make sure the hot water tank is primed and full of water first? We have recently bought a 2019 KL and are trying to get used to properly using the Truma system.

Tank sizes are small, as they are in most Class B RVs. My GL has 18 gallons fresh water onboard and 11/12 of grey/black waste water. All of that lasts for about 4-5 days. Note that I use my toilet all the time and some choose to use other facilities instead of their own. That would extend things considerably. Thanks for being a great part of this audience

We have avoided the under the hood generators and units without a generator because we travel with animals and live in the southwest where we need a/c most of the year and can't stop to shop or do anything without a way to run a/c. Can the Volta system do that?
@gosmall.livelarge3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Volta will do that job well.
@PennyLeisch3 жыл бұрын
@@gosmall.livelarge Really? I talked to someone who understands that type of system and they said I might get two hours of a/c. That wouldn't be enough for overnight when it doesn't cool off, and I don't think it would run the a/c more than that if the engine was broke down. I've been stranded in AZ in the heat and had to wait almost two hours for someone to get to me. Without a/c, I'd have been in danger and the dogs would have died. So I really can't afford to make a mistake in understanding this system. I like the idea, but I need to be sure it can really operate like a generator would for however long it's needed, not just for a meal break or something like that. Can you explain, please?
@gosmall.livelarge3 жыл бұрын
I get 12-14 hours of air conditioning from a single charge on my Volta system. If there is a chassis engine failure and one cannot drive to charge or do a charge on demand because of enshrine failure that is totally different.

Thank you for a VERY candid and informative video! From your experience with the Promaster and from meeting other Class B owners, if you had the option of selecting a chassis for a Travato to be built on, would you still go with the Promaster, or would you pick something else (Ford Transit, Mercedes, other)?
@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
Great question. I would still choose Promaster because the chassis is 4” wider than the others. I will take width over interior height. I don’t need 4x4 they way I RV. Thx for watching :)

@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
have not seen “G” floor plan on other chassis. Might be a width constraint?!
@dfloyd8884 жыл бұрын
The exact "G" floorplan requires the width of a Ducato/ProMaster. One could perhaps come up with a similar floorplan, perhaps with a shower pan in the back where one flips the bed up to use it, but there would also be issues of plumbing as well. Winnebago did some engineering to get around the fact that the shower pan was nearly level to the gray tank, and that the gray tank was too far away to naturally gravity dump. I have seen other "B" makers have a front dinette, but the trade-off will be having the toilet be a cassette... which is fine in other countries, but here in the US, cassette toilets are a pain compared to black tanks. Sportsmobile has a custom van designing app that you can use. I've played around with it, and you can come up with some interesting ideas for custom van layouts.

Hello, I am torn between Travato 59GL (21 ft) and Solis 59P (19' 9"), 59GL is superior but I am leaning towards Solis 59P (with Murphy bed) primarily because it is more than a foot shorter and a lot easier to park and go to tight places. Thanks for the update, your videos are very helpful ! I am wondering, since tank size tends to be an issue in class B, I and know it's a personal decision for everyone, what are you feelings about a composting toilet so you have more fresh water and less dealing with a black tank ? If that would be a good option for putting in a Travato, do you think that would extend boondocking time ? Thank you !
@gosmall.livelarge4 жыл бұрын
Composting does not interest me because you still have to “deal” with the waste. If I was change the toilet I would look at the Laveo water-less toilet that Embassy RV uses. To my onboard fresh water I supplement with 4 gallons of portable so I can get by quite well. Good points though
@dfloyd8884 жыл бұрын
@@gosmall.livelarge This is the same reason why I wish Embassy RV had the option of a black tank. Since I'm dumping a gray tank anyway, a black tank is just one valve, as opposed to having to dump waste, either in a trash bag like the Laveo, or as composted stuff as in with a Nature's Head.
