APPLICATIONAL QUESTIONS FOR MATTHEW: 1. As you read Matthew, pay extra attention to what Jesus says about the Kingdom of Heaven. How does Jesus describe it? What is required to enter this Kingdom? 2. What are your expectations for how God’s kingdom should show up in our world? Are these expectations challenged by Matthew’s gospel? 3. Think about the ways Matthew teaches us to look for evidence of God’s kingdom at work. In what ways do you see it at work in your life, your church, and your community? 4. Read through Matthew 5-7. Which part of this sermon is highlighted for you? How can you put it into practice this week? Does the bible actually tell us that the messiah king would use military might to free the people from enslavement from their rulers? (I just got confused by that statement and couldn't find any supporting evidence in the bible)
@TheBibleEffect4 ай бұрын
Very good question! There are passages in the Old Testament that predict the reign of the Messiah, which some people (understandably) interpreted to mean that he would use military might to crush his enemies and establish his reign. For example, Psalm 2 was commonly interpreted (correctly) to be about the Messiah. Ps 2:6, 8-9, "I have set my king on Zion, my holy hill... Ask of me and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel." And another in Daniel: Daniel 2:44, "...the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed... It shall crush all these kingdoms and bring them to an end..." The Jewish expectation of a military messiah that developed is reflected in the apocryphal first century BC work called the Psalms of Solomon (note that these psalms had nothing to do with King Solomon). Pss Sol 17:21-22, 24 "See, Lord, and raise up for them their king, the son of David, to rule over Israel, your servant, in the time which you chose, o God. Undergird him with the strength to destroy the unrighteous rulers, to cleanse Jerusalem from gentiles who trample her to destruction... to smash all their substance with an iron rod; to destroy the lawless nations with the word of his mouth" So, while there are verses that people used to support the militaristic view of the Messiah, after Christ we understand that these were using militaristic language to speak of the conquering power of the Kingdom of God. Jesus conquered the kingdom of Satan, and His Kingdom is continuing to advance through the world until His return. I hope that helps to clarify. Blessings!

According to early church traditions, Saint Matthew wrote the 1st Gospel, Saint Mark wrote the second Gospel based on the accounts of Saint Peter, Saint Luke wrote next, as he was working with Saint Peter and Saint Paul, then at last it was Saint John. The Gospel of Saint Luke should have been written before AD 64, as his second book, acts seems to not mention the death of Saint Paul. For such a detailed writer such as Luke this seems to be an odd information to be left out. And he mentiones that others have already written about our Lord Jesus. Thus we can understand that the Gospel of Saint Matthew and Saint Mark were most probably written around AD 40 - AD 60, while the Jews were persecuting the Christians, and there were constant arguments between Christians and the Jews. The letters of the New Testament were also written during this period.
