"Since the advent of digital odometers on cars most people seem to think that they can’t be tampered with, but that is a pure myth, and to explain we have Chris Vasso from Carfax. Chris, welcome back to Goss’ Garage.
Always great to be here Pat.
Alright, tell us about today’s odometer fraud..."

Wait so how do I protect myself from odometer fraud? You've told me it exists, but now what steps I can take to protect myself....carfax reports only tell me what they know, And unless they physically inspect the car, a fraudster isn't going to go to them and tell them they've committed the fraud...

Thoughts, Ideas, and what? The answer is you are fucked. Like the car fax guy said the ones that are reported.. Hint hint hint. And buy the way all major car dealer ships do it too!

Look for things like tires, steering wheel wear, etc. If a car has 15k. It should still habe factory tires etc.
@X11CHASE

Yes but it's more of an extra measure. Sometimes people are cheap and lazy, so due to their lack of planning Carfax picks up on the discrepancy. Also, you can check previous service records to check the last confirmed mileage, though if you know an autoshop willing to report fraudulent numbers for you, then that can be worked around. Ultimately, cars should be thoroughly inpected before hand to see if their wear os consistent with the supposed mileage; adding in a Carfax never hurts.

Thoughts, Ideas, and what? They can roll the odometer but the mileage is still in the computer. Take it and have it checked

i have lost about 8000$ on this bullshit and when i get my next vehicle i will do a history report. if i find that it's been tampered with then i'm going to report the person in question to the NHTSA Office of Odometer Fraud Investigation. Any year can be affected, any type of odometer can be tampered with and if you are here for a how to video you better pray to god i don't ever buy a car from you. i'm going to court with the last guy that tried to screw me over and after that i'm going for the guy that sold me my current P.O.S that's 130000 miles over what it reads.

2:37 notice he said a Carfax will show any flood damage that was reported to them. You can almost always tell an high mileage car by looking at the wear on the brake peddle or wear at the top of the steering wheel. Look at the driver seat for wear and under the spare tire for water of mud.

The pedal makes no sense either. If the seller is going to all the trouble of tampering with the odometer, they'd just replace the pedal covers for $5 a piece.

Just remember to quiz the seller of any used car you are interested in and yeah, check the Carfax, but remember, not everything gets reported to Carfax. I've had 2 cars that were in accidents that involved insurance and body work, yet the accidents do not show up to this day on Carfax.

Carfax is only as good as the info it gets; Recently I "borrowed" MY license plate from MY vehicle and put it on the same make and model vehicle 1 year newer and a different color so I could drive it to get new tires. Evedentally the tire chain provided info TO Carfax based on MY license plate alone and NOT the VIN of the vehicle that I had taken up. Soooooo, when I ran the Carfax on MY vehicle it showed the mileage from the other vehicle!!!!!! I now feel that Carfax is not reliable at all!! Who checks the info that Carfax gets? Bottom line the tire chain and or Carfax invaded MY privacy WITHOUT MY permission and obviously for $$

I am replacing the cluster of my f150 07 , it hasn't been wrecked i just like the look of a different Ford Cluster. how do i legally change the milage on the working dash from the wreck donor to be corrected to my actual milage? Ford Dealers refuses to help.
@stephencannon3140
@stephencannon3140 4 жыл бұрын
Coby Lobaugh The reason the dealer won’t help is exactly this scenario. They don’t want to be implicated in any potential fraud. Depending on how much the mileage difference is you might be able to wait until the working vehicle mileage catches up with the donor vehicle. If that difference is already significant then you can still do it. The title has a odometer disclosure statement. If you know the mileage of your vehicle when removed add that to the donor odometer. Basically if you disclose the mileage as required you have done your part. The shady dealers DON’T....they probably get away with it most of the time because they put a mileage that maybe plausible for the year and condition. Swapping instrument clusters is legal as long as true mileage is disclosed at trade in. Myself I purchased a Platinum Instrument Cluster for my Explorer sport. I had the seller program “Future Mileage” and waited until then to swap out.

I just had a cluster replaced on my 2021 Ford Escape. I had about 18K miles on a USA cluster, it came back with 11K miles on a Canadian cluster. The previous original owner was from Canada. Somewhere in the importation process the Canadian cluster was replaced with a USA cluster which quickly died after I got the car. If you push a button, you can easily figure out that the 11K miles I got would read 18K km. So they lost about 7K miles on me on the bad and wrong conversion. They reset the ECU too based on the work order mileage (which would be in kilometers now). The Ford shop refused to add the 7K miles back on saying it would be a felony, I said they already committed a felony. Now I've got to find a lawyer and sue them for $10,000 for odometer fraud for not setting the correct mileage. The resale value of my car has been destroyed by this malfeasance and they could have put a USA cluster inside for a NYS registered car. I hear lawyers fees should be covered like under lemon laws. Now what about CarFax, when will this mess show up in their records? When I get my 20,000 mile checkup at 13,000 miles?

It really depends on my Sierra that I'm building I put a new suspension and lift and put a new motor and transmission in it I rolled it back from to 50k miles because its my truck and always will be my truck. If you do however rebuild them and plan on selling it take note of the mileage it had when it was rebuilt and write it down on the paperwork i.e parts receipts. To show the man or woman purchasing your car that hey it says it has a 180k on the dash but I have proof that the major components have been rebuilt at a 110k

i'm suspicious that the digital odometer on a car I'm buying has been shut off and on and off and on and off and on, so that in the end the car shows very few miles. Is this an easy thing to do?

How does CarFax know if the odometer was rolled back>?
@X11CHASE
@X11CHASE 4 жыл бұрын
By a suspected discrepancy in regards to what's reported to them, so sometimes they unfortunately don't ever find out things that weren't reported. Such as, fixing a car without going through insurance, usually the body shop wont report the visit because I'm pretty sure it's the insurance companies' job. However, I've had many accidents go unreported for many cars I had fixed through insurance. These vehicle history websites like Carfax rely on whatever was reported to the DMV (for bigger things) and whatever autoshops report as far as service visits and whatnot.
@X11CHASE

It also helps to check Carfax to see what the last reported mileage was, because maybe the odometer was rolled back recently by a lazy hackjob who want's to just scam someone dumb

That isn't true in the state of PA all miles are required on the title When I brought my 1988 Grand Maquis LS with 32,000 actual miles. and all inspections in the state od PA record mileage of the vehicle. when I got the title back the mileage was on the title and this is a 30 year old car. To combat odometer fraud make all vehicles no matter the age record the mileage on the titles like they do in PA
@FranksModelAviationWorkshop
@FranksModelAviationWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
Chris Lemaster Pennsylvania doesn’t require an odometer reading on cars older than 10 years. I bought a 1984 Corvette in November of 2019 with 32000 miles on it. The title says exempt in the mileage box. However, the car looks brand new still, so I’m assuming the odometer is showing the correct mileage. It still has the original exhaust, the interior is in perfect condition, the engine compartment is clean. It does have leaky valve covers, but the L83s are notorious for that. The suspension looks original too.
