Give a Gift to Jesus this Year - Your Speech
Do NOT give Gossip, Slander & Detraction
Luke 12:3 “Jesus said, ‘Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops.’”
1 Corinthians 6:9-20 ~ St. Paul tells the Corinthians that slanderers will not inherit the kingdom of Heaven.
2 Corinthians 12:20 “For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.”
Romans 1:29-32 “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
Galatians 5:20-26 ~ St. Paul tells the Galatians that participating in dissensions and factions keep us out of Heaven.
Ephesian 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
James 1:26-27 “Anyone who thinks he is religious but does not bridle his tongue deceives himself.”
James 3:8 “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”
James 4:11 “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.”
The Catechism says a person is guilty of detraction who discloses another's faults and failings to persons who did not know them; and Catechism says a person is guilty of the grave sin of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.

St. Paul urges the Ephesians 4:29, 31-32 “Never let evil talk pass your lips; say only the good things men need to hear, things that will really help them. Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.”
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”
Ephesians 5:20 “Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”
